Ivan Helguera vs. Unai Emery

By: Cesar | December 11th, 2008

Ivan Helguera used to be a big-time footballer.

The defensive midfielder from Santander featured 47 times for the national team, representing Spain at Euro 2000, the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004. Besides that, he made a heady living with Real Madrid, featuring in their 2000 and 2002 Champions League-winning sides and claiming the Spanish title 3 times.

These days, he’s a relative nobody under coach Unai Emery at Valencia.

He plays cards with Zigic, charades with Hugo Viana and collects tips at Manolo’s with Curro Torres.

He’s so out of favor that Emery decided to use Maduro at center back this weekend at the Nou Camp then go with Helguera, who’s more suited to the role. To put it simply: Helguera’s not very good anymore.

Now I’m not one to rail too often against my players. I’ve been known to make offensive comments against Arizmendi, De Los Santos and Rufete in the past. But more often than not, the players represent my club and I try to respect them.

Helguera’s a different case. A different breed. He comes with baggage.

In my eyes, he’s Madridista through and through. He comes from the Florentino Perez era of Real Madrid, when they thought they were the team of Galacticos and backed that up on the field for a few seasons, winning title after title.

Eventually, the Zidanes y Pavones model Perez advocated collapsed, giving way to a culture of excess that still haunts Madrid to this day. Take a look at Tuesday’s MARCA and their firing of Bernd Schuster for evidence to this.

When Helguera came to Valencia on a free transfer in 2007, I blogged about how skeptical I was of the move.

Although he came over as a scrappy player, I was skeptical because of his devout love of Madridismo (i.e. the pampered & spoiled athlete syndrome) and the implications that would have for our club.

Since he signed for us, he’s been nothing but awful. He can’t defend. He can’t run. He has no tactical sense and without someone like Zinedine Zidane or Guti in front of him, he’s no idea what he’s doing anymore.

Fair enough. There’s a host of players that have no idea what they’re doing at our club. Joaquin comes and goes as he pleases most of the time.

So when word broke today that Helguera and Emery were at it again, fighting in front of the team for the second time this season, I had to laugh.

What the f$(k did Valencia expect?

According to sources the incident started when Helguera wrote a ‘joke’ on a blackboard used Emery to convey messages to the team. Emery didn’t think the joke was funny and erased it, asking who it was that wrote it.

Helguera admitted it was him and was then questioned by the coach as to what he meant by it, to which he responded that it was only a joke.

I shouldn’t take sides. I wasn’t there. Maybe Emery got annoyed for no reason. Maybe Helguera was simply trying to make his mates laugh. Maybe there’s no cause for harm.

Or maybe Helguera should pack his bags and leave the team.

I just do not like the guy.

I’d rather Curro Torres serve drinks at Manolo’s and scrub the floors of the Valencia dressing room for the next 10 years and be paid like a starting left back than suffer through another episode of ‘The Adventures of Ivan Helguera’ in center defense.

The guy acts like a first teamer and defends like a Valencia Z player.

Can you tell that I don’t like the guy?

Unfortunately, we’ll have to suffer Ivan’s steady horrid play for some time. Terminating Helguera’s contract would cost about €4.5 million, so we’d prefer to find a buyer for him. But who in their right mind would want this guy?

Please, Fernando. Please Vicente Soriano. Tear up Helguera’s contract. Shred it in your office shredder.
Tell Helguera to go as far away from the Mestalla as he can go. Loan him out to the New York Red Bulls if you have to (woe betide Ivan if I saw him on the streets of my fine city).

Just go very far away. And don’t come back …

Well this is great news that Helguera is gone, however we need a new CB now more than ever. If either Albiol or Marchena are injured then we have to endure a match with Maduro or Moretti at the back.

Im still not convinced Viana should leave, he seems to be alright, plus we really need these players for the UEFA and Copa Del Rey. Will Emery use the reserve team when they’re gone?

i hope Viana stays too. I remember seeing him in 2004, hoping he’d come to VCF! He was an immense talent and I think he just needs the right coach…

I feel sorry for Helguera and have nothing against the guy, he was great when he was in his prime but not after 2004/2005 there… He should never have been signed. Whoever signed him is a total idiot or was being very cruel to me on purpose…

    Anyway I wish him well…

    Anti-Barca de por vida!

Hi, I know you have all made Helguera the chopping block of the month for your remarks, but he has a good track record that many players would be proud of and is not that bad either considering what we have to chose from because I have very little confidence in the ones that we are left with anyway.FIRING Helguera is madness because he will not agree to be ceded which means he has to be bought and he has to agree with the offer. Valencia are liable for his contract that ends June 2010,worth 5.5 million
So we are paying that money so he can sit on Benidorm beach if he likes. Another mad move by the management. He could have played in the St.Etienne match for instance and stopping possible injuries to one of our regular players.
I expect the management (in need of a better word) will take someone from the 3rd division team again for them to sit on the bench and give another opportunity to send them down again….Almendras

Emery talking about Moretti or Maduro playing in CB…
yet he didn’t say that there won’t be any players coming in or out..

i think Del Horno is better in CB than those two..Del Horno is a bit more aware of the game..

What I like about Emery is that he lets the players know he doesn’t need them, and doesn’t try to keep any just to be nice. He knows we’re in need of skill and we can’t afford to waste any money now. I really like that.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to welcome a Madridista to Valencia, unless it’s someone like Morientes who wasn’t treated well there, in my opinion. Helguera was a star there-a star of Madridista is never good in my eyes.

    Amunt!

    @ Dina
Morientes was certainly a star back in 2000, bigger than Helguera! Difference between the two is, Morientes is a really good guy i believe, and i see Helguera as an arrogant bastard. Plus we took Morientes from Liverpool, Helguera directly from Madrid. But don’t be mistaken, once they both represented the glory of Madrid!

I have a lot of respect for Morientes and I’m a cule. Fernando obviously had a good run with Madrid and is still good friends with Raul and the like, but he never really blended in as a Madridista, even being linked to Barcelona a few times – he must actually have a soul.

The first point that I would like to mention is that we won’t become better if we say “Puta Madrid”. Let’s just forget about that team and know that they are just an opponent, just like Barca or Vollareal or valladolid…
I don’t understand people who hate Real, But not Bara. They are the same. They both are just opponents, nothing more…
I AM a Valencia fan, and I like the way we play more than any oter team, but I DON’T HATE MDRID! Why do you?
A guy that has a contract with our team is Vallencianista, even if he used to play for Real…

I am very happy that Helguera is gone, I dont think he brought anything to the team. It seems like there won’t be any signings during the winter, but hopefully the team will pick up a few more defenders after the season is over. Afterall, we will need help for the Champions League next year!
    Amunt Sempre!!

According to Fernando and Soriano we might not get any new players this winter! And they’ve stated that Moretti, Maduro and Albelda can play as center backs! What are these guys smoking ?

Im OK with kicking Helguera out, but we only have 2 CBs at the moment! Cant we just get one more?

    hi all ,
@ Cesar : about the identifications thread , i was about to propose that idea when our curve is heading downwards .
it would be just an incident to lose from barca ( playing without 2 CBs ) ,we were great until the BETIS match , so i think i will wait for the next 2 fixtures :-)
    & @ Timothy : Happy Birthday , i think ” silva is back ” as a gift is good !

What a rollercoaster ride supporting VCF turns out to be… one day we get thrashed 4-0 and hear rumours that we could go bankrupt faster than a bailout-less General Motors, next thing you know we get a cash injection and have gotten rid of Helguera and Hildebrand. If this continues, expect us to get thrashed by Espanyol, have someone buy Zigic for 20 million euros, get thrashed by Madrid, have someone buy Viana for 10 million euros and sign a CB, GK and Keirrison

You may not be far from the truth Daniel. I expect us to lose against Madrid anyway and if Tamudo is playing and in form with Rufete to feed him we may lose against Espanol. We could have bought Tamudo years ago, and he wasnt expensive, what a chance we missed. For the last eight years he has never scored less than 10 goals per season for Espanol. He is what you would call a goalmaker he doesnt need things set up for him. Fernando said on the TV news last night that there would be no purchases till next season, so you can all stop the name-dropping !!!..Almendras

@ Gevor : It’s not that we necessarily hate the team that is Madrid, but the idea that comes along with them. The idea of a Madridista is that they have a severe superiority complex, thinking they are head-and-heels above everybody else. Which is fine, when you are in form ala Barca. They ARE far better than anyone in Spain, probably in Europe. Yet Madrid continue to be arrogant. It’s why the whole city of Barcelona hates Madrid, its why we hate Real. Break a leg Helguera. No…literally…splinter your tibia.

Let’s get tres puntos huh? We need a big win.

I THINK Espanyol is without Tamudo and De la pena, riera is in liverpool, our only threat is raul garcia who scored 2 times as i recal last season on us and he beat us alone! so i hope this time with emery, we will eat thm and spit them bones!
