It Never Ends …

By: Cesar | May 23rd, 2008

Our New CoachJust when I think I can put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and type an ‘End of Season’ post, something comes up to pull me away …

Today, it’s bad news about my favorite player and now ex-Valencia ‘keeper Santiago Canizares.

‘El Dragon’ faces child abuse charges in a scandal that has seen one man sent to prison, judicial sources revealed in Santiago, Spain, on Thursday.

The 38-year-old Canizares has faced questioning as a witness in the affair involving Tomas A.R., known as “the sorcerer,” a guru-therapist who was found guilty of abusing girls aged between 11 and 22 in February 2007.

While I don’t get all the specifics, Santi’s lawyers have squashed all ties linking him with any wrongdoing. Let’s hope so … keep your eyes peeled for more news in this case.

So going back to Valencia, we have a new coach!

His name is Unai Emery (pictured above) and he signed a two-year contract with an annual salary of 1.5 million euros yesterday.

Emery has spent the past two seasons with Almeria, guiding the Andalusian team to promotion in 2007 and an eighth-place finish this season in the Spanish league. Emery began coaching at Lorca, which he led into the second division.

The 36-year-old Basque will take charge on July 1 and will be formally introduced Friday.

Emery was appointed after a breakdown in negotiations with Racing Santander coach Marcelino Garcia. Marcelino announced his departure from Santander on Wednesday but said he had not signed with another team.

“He (Emery) doesn’t feel as if he’s a second choice because he has had other options before Valencia and he has chosen us,” Valencia’s technical secretary Juan Sanchez told the Europa Press news agency.

Sanchez praised Emery for being “a brave coach” and for his “working methods.”

“I have no doubts that he can be important in helping the team improve in the forthcoming season,” Sanchez said.

Emery will be our third coach since last November. He follows Ronald ‘TinTin’ Koeman, who was fired after five months in charge despite leading the team to the Copa del Rey title, and caretaker coach Salvador (Voro) Gonzalez.

I like the appointment. He did a lot with very little at Almeria. He’s known as a tactical genius, spending hours breaking down a game and analyzing players for their weaknesses.
He’s a training ground guru who makes the players work hard in practice. He’s known as a coach who will stick with a formation only as long as it works … he’s flexible enough and humble enough to see that if something isn’t working, he’ll change it.

I’ve heard some negatives regarding Emery. He’s too young, he’s never coached a big team, etc. I don’t buy it. Considering Sanchez has said we’ll only move one big name player in the transfer window (presumably Villa), Emery will have a very strong squad to work with.

Pablo Hernandez will be back from Getafe. We may have Zapater and Sergio Garcia from Zaragoza. We’re getting Asier Del Horno back from Athletic Bilbao (I dunno how good that news is …) and Morientes will be back for another season …

Emery should be well-equipped. And that’s not something this tactical genius has ever had. Not at Almeria. Not at Lorca. I think big things will happen with this guy at the helm.

Speaking of coaches, former boss QQ Sanchez Flores has a new job as coach of Benfica.
Good luck, my friends.

Is Joaquin going to Atletico Madrid? That’s what today’s MARCA says.

If that’s our big-name transfer, good going … the aforementioned Pablo Hernandez can slot right into Joaquin’s place.

Still, I don’t see this as the move Valencia will make. In my opinion, I think David Villa will be sold for about 40 million euros (I know, it sucks. But he’s ready to go …). With that money, we get Zapater and Sergio Garcia. Also, we snatch away current Pichichi Daniel Guiza from Mallorca. We’ll still have about 20 million euros left. Add to that the sales of guys like Zigic, Manuel Fernandes, etc., we should be primed to snatch the guy I think would revolutionize the midfield: Rafael Van Der Vaart. Not bad, eh??

Hey, at the very least there’s some positivity around the squad these days.
A new coach, some new blood coming in, the possibility that not all of our good players will be leaving, the possibility of a new owner …

Bright skies ahead? We’ll see …

I don’t see anyone ponying up €40million for Villa. That’s just too much money, especially if you could get Guiza for half that. While Villa is a fantastic player, the market right now is flush with strikers trying to make moves, so €40million is too high a price for anyone. I don’t think Real Madrid are in it for 40, nor do I think that anyone in England will pony up that kind of dough for a striker…

    Just my thoughts on it.

Hi, Players listed as ‘Transferible’ in the football papers today were..Del Horno,Regueiro,Curro Torres,Gavilan,Fernandes,Boutelle,Viana,David Navarro,
Estoyanoff. Of these I would like to see Regueiro kept back, he is a reliable left-winger. Las Provincias lists the same players but remarking there is a lot of money invested here but with the absence of Gavilan and Butelle.
The English papers hint that Everton will continue borrowing Fernandes. No doubt we will see many different ideas in the next few weeks but at least one thing we will be spared this year and that is the Superdeporte
screaming every week HE’S OURS. and each week would be a major star that never happens. There were so many certainties last year I have forgotten them. We can resign ourselves this year ‘it ain’t gonna happen’
    Let’s keep optimistic………Adios.

Sad to hear the news about Cani, hopefully it’s all hogwash. Now for the football fan’s worse time of year.. summer. Granted every two years we have either the glorious World Cup or the Euros to entertain us for a month, it still leaves a void for us to fill on weekends once these tournaments are done. The only silver lining of the summer though, is the summer transfer news and the creativity of football journalists who are just as starved for action as we are. “Newly promoted Numancia offers entire squad and training grounds for Cristiano Ronaldo!” “Lampard and Gerard to swap clubs!” “Jose Mourinho to join Inter Milan… as replacement for Ibrahimovic!” Hey, we gotta be entertained somehow once the Euros are over.

van de Vaart will be very expensive if we want to sign him…

looking at our squad i doubt our midfield is really that weak, especially since well get a decent coach wich helps.
i think money should go to improving our back line, 62 goals against is really not accapteble maybe get a new goalkeeper too since cani will be leaving (and we saw mora perform vs Bilbao, we dont want that!) Gomes of PSV wants to leave and hes a good one.

other then that maybe repay some off the massive debt might be a good idea as well.

Canete is not like that. Bunch of BS!!!

OK, I like Emery. I am really looking forward to see him work some magic on Los Che, but he plays pure attacking football and Valencia are still stuck in defensive mode. Hmmmmm….

I like Zapater and Sergio Garcia. I have heard Guiza may head to Roma. We have too many damn players on our rosters that no one wants. Sigh.

I agree Elisa, we have way too much deadweight on our books. Wud be great if there was some sort of central football exchange or agency that we could offload all these players onto for cash.. Hmm isn’t that a thought, bet we’ll probably see that in a couple years, if not already.

I do agree with Cesar we could get 40 million euro for Villa as Chelsea, after losing the Champions league final are almost certain to flash the cash, i hear everywhere that Valencia are ready to off load Banega i really hope not that would be a mistake. Perhaps we should sign Zapater and Guiza then Juan Sanchez should concentrate all his efforts on getting rid of dead weight. Does anyone think that Valencia should give Tavano another chance he is quicker and alot more mobile than Zigic and morientes. I reserve judgement on Emery because it could either way i personally would have preferred Marcelihno, second Emery’s asssistant from Almeira has yet to decide between being Valencia’s number 2 or head coach at Almeira. Emery is promoting unity thats the buzz word at Valencia don’t know if he will do that were famous for in fighting.

Hi, new words from our Leader Soler. He announced today that he has lost 8 kilos and is now in good health. To date he has not recd. any offer for his shares. Getting rid of the ‘three’ was Koeman’s idea, not his.
It is not essential to sell important players to better the economic position. He is not the President and will not return to that position, he is solely concerned with the new Stadium which will be the best in the World. He also said that Soriano (2nd biggest shareholder) who called the extra general meeting, has not got any money.
There you are guys, new wise words for you to ponder over.

Some of you have been talkingabout Van der Vaart, well I cant see Valencia ‘buying ‘ anybody and in any case Barca are interested in him. Barca have Ronaldihno,Deco,Etoo,Oleguer & Gudjohnsen, listed as transfers so with that sort of money to play with you wont get a look in anyway. Español are listed as having an interest in Zigic, whether that means paying money, I dont know. Athletic dont want Del Horno anymore. Other players on Valencia’s books I didnt mention are
Sisi,Pallardo,AAron,Castells,Cerra,Nacho Insa,Miku,Verdes. I dont know some of these but they are quoted in the paper……….Adios, Almendras.

We could definitely get 40 mill for Villa, especially if he shines in the Euro Cup, which he most certainly will do. I unfortunately agree that we are unlikely to swoop VDV, but I really hope I’m wrong.

Bad news bout cani. never good to hear kinda news, conori am 100% with you bout banega! it is said tht lazio want him!! i dont understand why would they get rid of a great talent. according to goal.com it says tht banega failed to impress…. what the hell??? everybdy is happy with banega’s talent… if thy mean drinking and driving oh well… get over it! thts past! if he repeats it punish him by making him pay smthing but not sell him! hes one of the players im rr\eally looking forward to see next season as a starter! i dnt know why r they blind to not see his talent! im gona be so pissed if they sell him! As for villa…40 millions is a bit tomuch maybe 35 million if he works his magic with spanish national team! damn we have so many players that suck! i think valencia’s policy is to buy cheapplayers to they would become legands like KaKa or anderson in Manchester united, but poor guys they dnt have the vision to do so! thy seem to buy every stupid talent out there! i just wish we would get rid of them some way, sell them cheap or at least end thier contracts and give them to other teams perhaps league B! and whats the news about tht Elmander guy! is he who we realy want.. see what i mean they always buy those cheap players wishing they would hit and become stars in valenica!!! stupid ass choices i swear! and if they dont, well we will add a player to our long list of unwanted players that rather work in a coffee shop!

Regarding the negatives of Emery: He surely can’t do any worse than Koeman, right? … I hope I haven’t jinxed it, but he does seem very good at making a cohesive unit out of a bunch of rag-tag players.

OMG! It is my dream to see Martins in a Valencia t-shirt!

As an Inter fan I was horrified that they sold him to Newcastle and have been hoping he would come to Valencia!

If there is any way we could make this happen, I know given the right coach and time to adjust he would be legendary! Granted he doesn’t get injured badly or anything like that…

This from Sid Lowe is worth a read
    Best president

Football’s very own Brian Potter with his potbelly, rubbish tache, flabby jowls, shabby suits, and marvellous ability to run a club with disastrous and comic consequences, Juan Soler is special. As in “needs”. When he took over at Valencia in 2004, they’d just won the league and the Uefa Cup. Having also been to two Champions League finals and won another league title in the previous three years, they were statistically the continent’s best club. Three and a half years later, Soler had clocked up one unsold former stadium, one unbuilt future stadium, €300m worth of debt, €180m worth of players, one star signing in a police cell, another star signing naked on the internet, a club captain in court, three veterans with over 1,000 Valencia games in exile, three medical chiefs, seven directors of football, five coaches … and no trophies. Within a couple of months of him leaving for medical reasons - he was making Valencia sick - they won the Copa del Rey. The perfect president. For someone else’s club
