Incredibly Short, Incredibly Tedious Valencia Season in Review
By: Cesar | May 28th, 2008
So I’ve wanted to write this Valencia Season in Review for some weeks now, but one thing or another got in the way. Life has its ways of playing tricks.
But here it is. For what it’s worth, this will be my last post on the Valencia blog for a month or so. Please follow me to the Spain Euro 2008 blog where I, along with Elisa of the Athletic Bilbao blog, Ryan of the Sevilla blog and Mando of the Espanyol blog will provide you with all the information you need on La Furia Roja’s run to the Euro 2008 crown.
With players such as Marchena, David Villa, David Silva and Raul Albiol plying their trade for the national team, we’ll all have something to look for.
If anyone’s interested in writing a blog post for the Valencia blog while I’m away, e-mail me at cesarman@yahoo.com … now, without further to do … here’s …
The Incredibly Short, Incredibly Tedious Valencia Season in Review
What a season it’s been, eh?
We started with dreams of Moscow and the Champions League final. We ended being grateful with not being relegated. Like I said, life has a way of playing tricks.
We had 4 coaches this season: QQ Sanchez Flores, Oscar Fernandez, Ronald Koeman and Voro. We now have a new one for next season, Unai Emery from Almeria.
We saw the comings and goings of Manuel Fernandes, Zigic, Ever Banega and Maduro. We saw legendary Valencia players David Albelda, Angulo and Santiago Canizares publicly humiliated by the coaching staff as they were ‘fired’ from the team. We saw them come back after Koeman and his staff were let go, a final hurrah for players that have given the Valencia shirt so much.
We saw some Champions League football. Disappointment against Chelsea (again), humiliation to Rosenborg and some good fortune against Schalke 04. We crashed out and concentrated on the Copa Del Rey, winning a stirring semifinal against Barcelona before capturing the Copa against Getafe, one of the few bright moments of the season. UEFA Cup, here we come!
We saw victory against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, a surprising Arizmendi goal sealing the game. We saw a hopeless 5-1 defeat to the champions at home, the boobirds on parade at the Mestalla.
We saw Juan Soler dismiss himself as president of the club and Agustin Morera take his place. We take a moment to remember the fallen workers at the Nou Mestalla, a horrible symbol for the club’s excesses if there ever is one.
So, here’s some quick awards to hand out … what do you all think?
Player of the Season: David Villa
Not many players to choose from here, but Villa was consistent when he tried. 22 goals in all competitions (18 in La Liga) is nothing to sneeze at. Unfortunately, El Guaje is probably leaving for greener pastures. We wish him well … Mata comes a close second for an outstanding campaign.
Goat of the Season: Ronald Koeman
Who else could it be? This guy was clueless when it came to managing the squad. Good riddance. Juan Soler came a close second. This leads us to …
Worst Player of the Season: Ivan Helguera
Why is this Real Madrid reject on the team? I hate him …
Game of the Year: Copa Del Rey Final vs. Getafe
The Real Madrid game is a close second. At least we had a day to celebrate being fans. It was great fun to win the cup and make it into Europe next season.
Worst Game of the Year: First game of the year vs. Villarreal, 3-0
There are lots of candidates for this one, but I feel the first game of the season set the tone for all the rest. What a drubbing. What a season … UGGH!
Best Goal of the Season: Mata’s goal against Barca in the Copa semi-finals, 2nd leg
Besides Villa, maybe the MVP of the squad. Great goal in an important game. Close runner-up? Moro’s goal against Getafe in the final. And Arizmendi’s against Real Madrid.
Quote of the Year: Joaquin regarding Koeman.
Classic. Koeman says Joaquin came to Valencia for 30 million Euros but played like he’s worth 30. Joaquin said this in reply.
The only thing he was worried about was having dinner with five or seven bottles of wine, for a warm, relaxing glow. And when he left he didn’t say goodbye to the players - he just left with six or seven million euros. [New coach] Voro has gained in five matches the same or better than Koeman managed in five months! Koeman has knocked me down and I’m ashamed by what he’s said about me. But I don’t blame him entirely for my not going to Euro 2008 - just 99 per cent.
Ouch!!
I can’t think of anything else to add. Please add your opinions on the season that was, a season that will go down in the annals of time as one of the worst seasons in Valencia CF history!!
I’m DONE with 2007-08 … forget Koeman, forget the drubbings and embarrassments. It’s time to look forward, with Unai Emery in charge … I’m excited for what’s to come next season.
Don’t forget: If you’d like to write a blog post in my absence, please contact me at the address above.
And please make sure to follow me to the Spain Euro 2008 blog, where I’ll be spouting the same nonsense you’re used to on a semi-regular basis.
Viva España!!! And AMUNT VALENCIA!!!

Agreed, Cesar, your blog has brought us disparate Valencia fans together–although it sucks that none of you live in DC–not to mention that it’s smart and well-written. I’ve been checking the Spain blog, as I’m starting to get pumped for the Euro Cup. Thankfully the fans are starting to register their feelings regarding Silva, as I have for weeks. No se vende Silva! On another note, does anybody know anything about Elmander, the supposed–a ridiculous notion, as no one can truly fill los zapatos del guaje–replacement for Villa?

Hi, VILLA & SILVA ARE INDISPENSIBLE. That is the statement from our President Morera, you can believe that if you like but Presidents have been known to tell fibs ! Barcelona is the team that is gunning for Silva at the moment but Valencia say it would have to be a “magic” price. We wont know a thing except newspaper rumours until after the eurocopa anyway so dont believe a thing you read about the big boys yet..adios.Almendras

Guiza has told his agent that he wants to play for Valencia next season

I heard that Valencia are linked to Johan Elmander, Daniel Guiza & Marco Amelia in the summer…do you think they are good acquisitions for the club if we managed to get them?

I think Guiza wont be too bad, although I’d still prefer a powerful striker like Martins or Gomis. GOing for Amelia would be a waste in my opinion, because he’d not only cost alot but we might be in the same situation as with Timo and Cani where they both squabble over who should be in goal. Maybe a good young keeper that wudn’t mind spending a year or two as backup until he can challenge for the gloves

I honestly don’t understand all the talk of getting a keeper. Timo was outstanding, for the most part, this season. I agree with Daniel, swooping a young keeper would be nice. But it seems like this is the focus of our transfer strategy, which I think is ludicrous. We have much larger problems–i.e. defenders, a creative midfielder, and a replacement, again I hope not, for Villa. VdV and Martins should be linked to us, but they’re not. Joder. Almendras, by the way, I love the coverage you bring to us from Espana–keep it up.

we do need a keeper, or at the very least a better backup one. If Timo gets hurt we get stuff like the Bilbao game which is a joke really.

Martijn,Butelle is still on the books, lent to Valladolid.Keepers are a problem because a Club will only play their number 1. Sanchez is interested in Palop and Palop is not saying no, but no way is he going to be 2nd string, thats why he left Valencia because he wasn’t being used. Since then with his 2 years with Seville he has won 2 EUFA cups 1 Supercopa and 1 Copa del Rey.
I read today that Carcedo 2nd trainer to Emery in Almeria will join him in Valencia as they work together well. Mestalla, Valencia’s 2nd team is struggling to climb up into 2ndB they have a semi-final and a final to win to make it.
In the first indoor Eurocopa on Friday Spain beat Italy
(Sanchez scored 2 and Carboni scored 2). There was a nice picture of Carboni pulling Sanchez’s shorts down I guess it was after the game otherwise there would have been a red card as well as a red face.
Spain beat Russia in the final 11 to 10 (Fran scoring 4 and Karpin scoring 3) Lets hope the pattern is repeated in the real thing. Adios…..AlmendrasPosted from

Hi, it is cloudy for Valencia as Sunny will be off, on loan to Racing. Emery wants to hang on to Miguel and if Valencia are tempted by big bucks for Villa then he would like Diego Milito (Zaragoza) as replacement. This wouldn’t be cheap as Zaragoza refused 24 million from Manchester City a few months back. Carneira will be off to Sporting Lisbon 2/3 million quoted or maybe a swap. Emery is not keen on Fernandes if any good offers come along. Del Horno seems to be part of next seasons lot.
It was also announced that the away kit will be Orange shorts and Black shirt, more money for the fans to provide, I hope the performance will be worth it..Adios

IFHHS issued their world club rankings today, putting Barcelona at 4th and Real Madrid and Valencia tied at 36th. As much as I despise Real Madrid, even I’d admit that we were not on par with them by any stretch of the imagination… unless conceding a goal against Arizmendi counts for -100 in whatever points system they use for this ranking.

GMOE: do us all a favor and never return to this blog. No se vende Silva a las putas de Barcelona. Daniel, I don’t know how they do those rankings either. It’s pure nonsense. Even Valencia in the middle of the Tin Tin times could beat Boca, and they’re number 2. Mierda.

If Valencia, as Goal.com have reported, sell my idol Villa for 17 mill and spend 15 mill for Milito, I just can’t see supporting a team that fucking stupid. Que carajas esta diciendo?

I know what you mean Tim, but never fear.. it is a Goal.com report after all. I will be truly pissed if Villa is sold for anything less than 35 mil euros though, unless quality players like De la Red are thrown in (God forbid, I still don’t want him to go to Madrid)

javier.i live an hour and a half from valencia ciudad,i might meet up once the season starts, late kick offs screw me cos i cant get home.have to tell you though im a miserable old git with a nice pair of tits ( for a bloke ) and a deep suspicion of people that appear friendly on the net but turn out to be ravin nutters in real life.i fall over when i drink and ive got touretts syndrome.im a typical millwall fan,but without the sense of humour.

yeah, it is a goal dot com story after all. i agree, that 35 mill plus De La Red deal is looking better and better. i don’t want him to stay in spain, but if that’s the best deal, then so be it. i can’t imagine that chelsea or arsenal won’t pony up 40 mill for villa. he’s relatively young and just clinical in the box. damn’t i don’t want him to leave. ok, on to the spain blog.

Hi, Valencia news from Fridays papers after my weekly shopping jaunt down from the mountains.Butelle is destined for Nice, Newcastle is interested in Zigic. Mourinho is said to want Joaquin for Inter and Valencia are asking 15 million. Still no news if Abelda is staying or going.Hildebrand wants to stay but Valencia are interested to bring in Palop,(which wont cheer up Timo) No news of the price or Seville’s opinion on this.
Subject to buying and sellings (Miguel is still a controversy)Subject to all this Emery has given a back line of Miguel, Albiol, Marchena and Moretti
Midfield, Alexis, Helguera.D.Navarro and Del Horno with the possibility of Marchena playing mediocentro.
Forwards? well depends what we’ve got. Adios AlmendrasPosted from
