Give Us a Chance!
By: Cesar | October 10th, 2008
With this being an international weekend jam-packed with World Cup qualifying, it’s a nice time to sit back, relax and enjoy our status as the top team in Spain.
It’s early, but that doesn’t mean we can’t revel in what our club’s accomplished. After last season, I think we have that right …
Anyways, who’s going to rain on our parade? None other than top Spanish journalist Guillem Balague, who says we’re not yet good enough to win La Liga.
Guillem’s a good journalist. And while I admire his opinion, I wish he’d let the season play out before making prognostications. Nostradamus, he ain’t …
So what did Guillem say?
The fixture calendar has been very kind to them at the start of the season and we should not overlook the fact that their five wins from their opening six matches are a result of beating Valladolid, Deportivo, Malaga, Osasuna and Mallorca. That is not to say that any of those are easy games, especially away from home, but it has granted them the breathing space to improve and recover some much needed confidence.
I would really like to see how Valencia do against one of the much stronger sides in Spain because I have real concerns over their midfield: both in an attacking and defensive capacity.
One thing that has happened is that under Unai Emery – a coach who I really admire – Valencia have tightened up defensively. The new coach is obsessive about the detail and his preparation is meticulous, and that, coupled with some good centre halves like Albiol and Alexis – plus Marchena when he returns – means that Valencia are much tighter at the back and picking up points where they would have thrown it away last season. Another improvement over last term is in goal, where the new keeper, Renan, is looking very comfortable as well. Now that Valencia aren’t conceding as many goals – and with Villa, Mata and Silva you are guaranteed chances at the other end- Valencia are beating the teams that they should be, where as last season they weren’t.
However, I have a real doubt that the Valencia midfield can control or dominate a game against one of the bigger sides. Its all very well not conceding against a side like Depor and relying on goals from David Villa, but when you are up against a side like Barcelona, I suspect that this will not be enough.
Without controlling the game, will Valencia have enough to cope with the Barcelona attack for an entire match, will they hold out against Real Madrid and will they cope with the more complete football of Sevilla? I have real doubts as to whether they can.
You have asked where I think they will finish up in La Liga come the end of the season and you suggest that they are up their with Sevilla and Villarreal. I’m going to stick my neck out and predict that Valencia will not finish in the top three as they are a level below Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal and that by next May we will see Valencia battling it out for fourth place alongside Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.
So … what do you think?
For starters, I think he’s right on a few points. We have had a soft schedule to begin the season.
But that’s not our problem. We play the teams put in front of us. We beat those teams. As we should have. For that, we deserve some accolades. Besides, the schedule gets much tougher in early December, when we play the big boys of Spain in consecutive weeks (starting the weekend of Dec. 7th, we play Barcelona, Espanyol, Real Madrid, Atletico, Villarreal and Athletic to close out the first round of games).
Balague goes on to say that he’s wary of us in attacking and defensive capacity.
I beg to differ. For one, our attack has been rock solid these past few weeks. He makes a strong point regarding our midfield, but he wonders if we can hang against the likes of Barcelona.
Question is, can they hang with us? It’s not like we’re Real Betis over here, who hung tough with the Catalan giants. And what about Madrid, who lost out to a tough Depor side?
I guess what I’m trying to say is that we’re a tough out. We’re not a slouch. And with the confidence we garner beating clubs we should in the early part of our schedule, we should do fine against the big fish of Spain.
We all know we have defensive frailties. But Albiol and Alexis have played well together of late. And now, captain Carlos Marchena is back to man the ship.
As Balague points out, coach Unai Emery is a stickler for defensive play. Who’s to say we won’t get better in this department in the next few weeks?
He predicts we’ll be battling Sevilla and Atletico for a Champions League spot come May, as we’re ‘a level below Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal.’
C’mon … what does that mean? What did it mean in 2002? In 2004? Nothing!!
Let the games be played and let’s see what we can do … for now, I’m confident we can do well against the giants of Spain.
One person who is trying to temper some of the excitement regarding our fast start to the season is Valencia chairman Vicente Soriano (I need a nickname for this guy …).
Soriano feels obliged to keep expectations realistic.
“We have to be careful, sensible and quiet because worse times will come, and we have to make sure we can manage those as well,” he told the press, taking his glasses off and biting his lip while staring warily into the far off distance …
He added after a pause of 15 minutes, “At the moment we look down at the other clubs below and it fills me with so much pride.”
Me too … but what’s this about worse times ahead? Excuse me???
Final bit of news … the Copa Del Rey draw was held today and the COPA DEL REY CHAMPIONS VALENCIA were drawn against Third Division minnows Portugalete (see club logo, above).
Who?
The modest Basque club, from just outside Bilbao, have home advantage for the first leg on Oct. 29 and are the lowest ranked side left in the competition.
“At home we will battle away, try not to concede a goal, and work hard in defense. Beyond that, we have no alternative but to try and enjoy ourselves and see if we can nick some of their shirts,” Portugalete player Iker Arzubiaga told Radio Popular.
“I don’t think for a moment we have a chance of progressing. If it was a one-off game we could cause an upset winning at home, but later to go to the Mestalla will be tough.”
Sounds like a smart man … but as I said, anything can happen in football …
By the way, anyone care about defending the championship this year?
I say the Copa is a good excuse to give guys like Curro Torres a run. Poor guy’s been selling cotton candy in the Mestalla and dressing up like the Valencia Bat mascot just to be part of the squad. I say he deserves to stretch his legs some against Portugal or whomever we’re playing …
By the way, have you noticed how I said we had a chance against the big clubs yet I refuse to grant that same respect to Portugalete? I’m awful …

If we conceded a goal against them i would be in shock.
And frankly while Madrid have had some blowout games they have struggled against Betis which against both teams nearly took 2 points from them only to lose int he dying seconds.
I think Barca and madrid are great.. sometimes.
We can grind out a championship with the best of them/

im with everything guillim said in the first half of his article, and then he started to become not so smart! i think last term we wernt in our prime and yet we kicked atletico madrid 2 times as i remmeber! as long as villareal goes, i think they r playing well but this year we r a different valencia and we could actualy beat thier asses!! i dnt think we could beat madrid easily without silva in the group! manuel fernandes cant life all the team against thier middfield! so i think 2nd or 3rd place this season! i wish i could play against the porteges side in copa del ray!

To win the La Liga now? I don’t think so. Yes, we’re tough and strong now, and more determined than we were last season, but do you really think it’s enough to stop Madrid, Barca, Sevilla, Atletico, Villareal?
We’ve got to keep in mind that Villareal, Sevilla and Atletico can beat Madrid and Barca with a bit of work because they have a great squad and a lot of strength at the moment. I really don’t think it’d be a far-fetched thought to think that these can win against the two. But for us? I think it is.
Barca and Madrid can score goals like a machine gun fires when they play well. All their players work to score. When they play against us, they’ll try their very best to beat us, because they know we’re not easy to play with.
I think it’s safe to say Madrid and Barca still have to show their best this season. And I won’t be surprised if one of their best performances would be against us. But Valencia, in my opinion, showed their best. We’ve shown what we’re capable of.
Anyway, I hope we end up in the first three. That will be a great achievement in my opinion.Posted from

do u think Silva is gonna be able to play by December?
Btw, remember we defeated Barca, Atletico, and real Madrid last year with Koeman’s horror squad. This year, we have a great coach, high hopes, and a unified team…. We can do it, it’s not gonna be the first time we win the liga. Remember, we alredy showed what we are capable of doing by winning the Copa del rey; we had to beat Barca and Atletico, 3rd and 4th places in la liga. It wasn’t easy but we showed them we ain’t scared of flying high.Posted from

The fixture calendar has also been very kind to Barca and Madrid…
To be honest, I think Villarreal is going to win the league. Or maybe Barca. Sevilla looks good too. Atletico have played poorly, Madrid have good players but an stupid coach. So, I’m sure that Valencia can reach the second or third place this year.

Completely off topic, is there a reason why no top European club has gone after Juan Roman Riquelme since he fell out with Villareal and got sent to Boca?

There must be something about him we do not know.

Riquelme is a troublesome player, he showed that in both Barca and Villarreal, I guess that’s why seriuos European clubs are avoiding him…
But more important, he just “freezes” in most important games, he’s a constant underachiever as a “go to guy”, a leader. I love the guy but I guess he can’t handle the pressure; he shines in regular, “less important” games but he really sucks in knockout phases or finals. Remember the CL quarterfinal Villarreal:Arsenal in 2006; or Copa America final Argentina:Brazil a few years back; or Copa libertadores semis this year with Boca. I could name countless affairs when Roman looked lost in space.Posted from

Oh, about Valencia chances in La liga this year:
Of course we are not “on the level” with Barca or Real, we’re Valencia. Not the same historic importance, not the same player budget, not enough star players in our lineup. This is typically journalistic rubbish, where money talks and knowledge walks.
I’m so sick with the dilletantism and lack of knowledge in sports journalism.
Remember Euro 2008 and Spain journo “analysis” before kickoff. Spain stood or fell with Nino Torres. Period. All media space around. It was like “can Torres lead Spain to their first trophy in 44 years?” No Iniesta, Xavi, Silva or Villa. Of course, Torres signed for Liverpool the year before for a record 40M and Villa or Silva played for a lower Valencia. That’s what’s important today, salary and transfer fee, not quality and fidelity.
So, when Villa started cranking goals it was like “who is this guy?”
“And that guy on the left?”
And now everybody’s bedazzled because both Silva & Villa decided to stay with the “unknown” club. They just can’t figure it out.
And that’s EXACTLY why I’m so proud of this club at this moment: we show character, determination, quality.I’m a Valencia fan since 1999 and I keep repeating to people all the time: with a serious management and if we don’t have serious injury problems, we’re the strongest team in Spain. We never had a budget for two equally impressive lineups of 11 (as Barca or Real) to rotate the players, so an empty medical ward is not unimportant for us.
I’m confident. With this squad and coach, we’ll be in top 3 at the end of the season, and with a little luck we can end at the top.Posted from

I think our best 11 can beat any team in the world when in form.. ANY team. Alas, the way football goes in the real world unlike in FIFA 09, players will get injured and suspended for some time. It’s too early to predict whether we will win the league or not. On paper, Barcelona should be winning La Liga easily because of their strength and depth, but if we stay lucky in terms of injuries, or at least don’t lose many important players simultaneously, we’ll mount a serious Liga challenge

I loved your last comment Quin. I agree 98% thou. Valencia is not Manchester U or Real Madrid but we are not Cadiz, what I mean is… We are not unknown; we are more like Arsenal or Roma (well, sort of)
Daniel, I hope you enjoy the game…. I guess is all about our matches against the USAPosted from

I Think Valencia can make a push to the top four. And believe me we are still growing we will get better and better. Joaquin is finding his form again but he is still not at his best,Fernades is growing every game he plays and Vicente will also get better if he stays fit plus Mata also is growing. So believe espicially at home teams like Madrid and Barca will SUFFER look it last season in the Copa del Rey when the players were motivated we beat Barca imagine now with Emery at the helm

Hi, The article of Guillem is fair and is written as a realist and not a 100% Valencia fan. With Barca and Real
bound to be in the top 4 and Seville,Atletico and Villareal fighting for the other 2, I think we will be lucky for a Uefa spot. With 2 matches a week for the next few months (Uefa,Liga, copa del Rey and Spanish selection) we have not the reserves to cope with injuries and overstress. If however we have an early exit from the Uefa, then we can concentrate on the LigaCaesar, with his strange faces he pulls I rather like Soppyano……Adios and Amunt Almendras

there is a good interview with Emery at http://www.lasprovincias.es/valencia/deportes/valencia/ where he talks about the games played so far, the situation at the club when he first came, Joaquin, Timo and himself. Its interesting stuff, Emery is very intellectual and it seems that he was more in danger of being replaced at the begging of his stay than was suspected.
Guillem’s points make sense especially about the midfield only Fernandes has stood out, Albelda has only had one good game this season, Edu can pass the ball but can do nothing else and Baraja is old. and because Emery likes to play such a thin midfield Valencia will get numbers mismatched a lot in midfield. Valencia’s midfield will struggle to with he other top 6 teams midfield’s especially Villarreal and Atletico. Valencia are definitely good enough for a top 4 spot but winning the league might be a step too far for Valencia.

Ali thats only a rumor, inter want Banega and want to sell Crespo. Inter would like to use Crespo in a deal to get Banega at inter. there has been no indication that Valencia are interested in this deal. Fernando Gomez is still looking into Keirrison and other options. from what has been said in the Spanish media all f the other options are young cheap footballers not old high salaried Crespo.

I think we can be in top 4 as other teams have their problems too.
Not good enough for title this year but I’d be more than happy to be proved wrong..:)Posted from
