Getafe = Must Win

By: Cesar | April 4th, 2009

There’s been many a match we’ve called ‘Must Win’ this season.

But I mean it this time. This is a ‘must win’ match against Getafe tomorrow at the Mestalla.

We want to get to the Champions League? We need to start winning now.
We want to keep Silva and Villa? We need to start winning now.
We want to … oh, you get my drift.

We’ll solve world peace and cure various diseases if we win tomorrow. The match is THAT important.

Coach Unai Emery agreed with me, saying that the match against the Madrid-based Getafe was the beginning of our surge towards Europe next season.

“The game against Getafe is another final, a challenge because this game offers us the chance to advance in the table. Now we have a chance to pick up points at home, so we must press and focus on doing the best we can,” he told Spanish filth AS.

“Right now I’m only thinking about beating Getafe. Objectives are achieved by taking one step at a time. We should concentrate on the game at the Mestalla and not look past it.”

Certainly the Mestalla faithful would love to see Our Beloved win. Valencia CF haven’t registered a home win in almost two months.

Emery believes the team will give their all and that the fans will be behind them.

“The players are aware of the importance of the game and they are going to give their all on the pitch. We have to fight and keep our heads high and the fans will be with us,” he said.

Bang on, son.

As for Getafe, our opponents in last season’s Copa Del Rey final, they’re languishing in the nether regions of La Liga. They’re 14th, 2 points from relegation and have won one of their last eight matches, that being their last match against Recreativo. So they really need this one as well or else it’s Segunda, here we come.

Luckily, we’ll have the two David’s back in action as Villa and Silva will be back in action. Also, big boned Miguel should be back in action as should ‘Pisha’ Joaquin. Our attack looks solid.

Our problems are in the back (aren’t they always?) as only Albiol is available in the central defense. Marchena and Alexis are both unavailable. Emery gave David Albelda a run out as a central defender in practice this week. So expect some comical defending in the middle for tomorrow’s match.

What do our friends at goal.com think?

Both sides picked up important wins in their last games and a second consecutive victory here would be crucial for either side. There is no doubt that on their day, Valencia can test anyone in La Primera and, if they show the kind of resilience that they did against Racing, then they should pick up
all three points.

Valencia 2-1 Getafe

And that’s what I think, too.

We need these points. As in … NEED THESE POINTS.

For once, the focus isn’t on back room dealings, loans and financial scandals. It’s on the pitch, where it should be. This game is like a final and I hope the lads treat it that way.

Playing the remaining 10 matches as if they were finals isn’t too much to ask, is it?

They’re paid. Enthusiasm and morale is probably high at the club. Temporarily, at least.

Now’s the time to strike. I only hope they have it in them to show the Mestalla faithful and all of us that they’re resilient enough to come back from all this crap and get us into next season’s Champions League.

Let’s do it!!! AMUNT!

    @Kyle Fuck!

    @Alm Well Villareal doesnt have an easy schedule either! They play the top 3 as well so id say we got a shot.. Especially since its 2 points only and Villareal have to play in Champions League too and are not in good shape lately.

    I think much will depend on our match against Villareal, would be good to have a derby for the CL :P

    Our qualification to Champions League is depended on whether we can beat Villarreal or not, and we should get at least 5 points from Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid. The rest of the matches, we must win it without question. Villarreal will be having a difficult fixtures too, especially with Champions League matches still disturbs, and the loss of Santi Cazorla, perhaps Villarreal’s David Silva. Unfortunately, we lost Fernandes as well, Valencia’s Marcos Senna. Maybe we should compare our fixtures with Atletico Madrid as well.

    Damn shit! Take me, but not Fernandes!

    That are really bad news. Thank god Míchel is doing well as CM – now Edu has to show agains what a fine footballer he is. I don’t think that Baraja will help us much…

    The most important thing is that Albelda does not play as CM anymore – please let Maduro play it! Or even Marchena if there is no other possibility!

    @elzeny:

    I’d rather compare Aarón to Vicente and Joaquín than to Villa – Aarón is a winger.

    Carleto could even get a kind of Roberto Carlos – he just has to get used to European Football. Red a interview with him – he said that it is hard to cope with all the new tactic stuff because at Brazil it does not play such a big role. But he is crazy about Spanish football and watches hours of videos of Spanish matches at home in order to analyze them. What is more, his girlfriend is not here, yet, so he is pretty alone. Edu invites him very often to his house, there he plays with the children of Edu. All in all, I have a lot of hope that Carleto can develop very, very well.

    Cmon guys I dont think Albelda has been our worst player this year so far, that honor goes to Marchena or Albiol (he was great yesterday, but that does not redeem his lovely own-goal record). Even as a CB he was relatively solid.

    As for Fernandes getting injured I dont think it would be safe to play Michel with Baraja/Edu since he does not defend that well. I think Michel can play in midfield with Maduro or Albelda.

    Anyone else think that Albiol plays better as a right back than CB? He likes going forward, crosses pretty well and has a mean shot. Ive always thought he has certain skills that a regular CB doesnt have (he is also lacking in defending skills that every CB should have). IMO, he is a bit like Sergio Ramos.

    @Fayez: Interesting thought – so you think Albiol should play as RB? Well, he is not bad, maybe like a Moretti on the right side, but his crosses aren’t that great and he is a little too slow.

    I can imagine him as DM! There he could replace Albelda who is, well, no the worst player, but his amount of missplaced passes, his lack of teqnique in general, his lack of speed… In build-up, he is slowing the game down, focus one match on that! And when he tackles, he is almost as awkward as Marchena sometimes, producing stupid fouls. Compare him to Maduro in this aspect!

    MARCHENA is our worst player. He hasn’t played the last 2 matches and we have 2 wins. Coincidence? hhhhhmmmmmmmmm…

    if we are brave enough, let’s play 4-1-4-1 formation with cesar, miguel, alexis, albiol, moretti, baraja/albelda/edu, joaquin/pablo, silva, mata, vicente, villa. if not, play 4-2-3-1 with baraja and albelda in the middle. we have no other choice. actually edu is not better compared with baraja and albelda, and so does baraja and albelda each other and compared with edu. so only fernandes better than them all. so basically baraja, albelda, and edu have the same quality i think.

    Baraja and Albelda in the middle for the rest of the year. LOL! I mean :( This will make getting to the Champions League VERY HARD now. Even harder than before. Fernandes is such a massive lose. I think he is as big a lose as Villa because like Villa, we have no one of that same quality to fill that position. Albelda and Baraja are not good/fast enough on defense and Edu is always hurt. I agree with El Valenciano about Albelda slowing the game down. All 3 of those guys do it. Fernandes was our X factor. Not good…

    Now I am quite sure that he will stay. He feels fine here, he has family and friends here… I think he is a Valenciano.

    @ Kyle: look at this:

    Yea,I watched Albiol yesterday playing RB and he was great,so he could play more matches like RB.But I don’t think that position will be his new position.And I don’t understand 1 thing,he was awful like CB,and yesterday he was great,and RB position needs a lot of running,dribling and staff,so i don’t understand how he managed to play excellent if he does not have quality for that kind of staff.I mean he has speed but doesn’t have dribling…

    You dont always need to be a good dribbler. Some aspects of his game are ecellent for a right back. He runs in well and has good speed and defensive ability with his long legs. At an angle it is benificial.. in a CB is akward as he is forced to spin around quickly.. much harder for a tall guy.

    @ Javier and Bane :

    I agree with both of your points. Personally based on yesterday’s performance alone for Albiol (as we have never seen him play as a RB before), I think it was the best game ive seen him play for Valencia in his entire career. I also think he is the best RB we have at the moment if he can produce even half of what he did yesterday (and that includes Miguel as well).

    The most important aspect of any RB is their ability to defend (and Albiol defends better than most RBs). He also is very good going forward and is a good passer. I think the only area he is lacking is in his crosses (although we cant really say much about it since he was never given a chance to cross before).

    When comparing him with Albelda, Alexis, Maduro and Angulo (i.e. the players Emery has tried at that position before) he is miles better at that position. I think Albiol could be a natural right back as he is clearly not a natural CB.

    About his dribbling skills, im not quite sure where you got that from…he is really tall and lanky but he is quite fast and he does have good dribbling skills (remember his idiotic run a few weeks back when he dribbled thru 4 or 5 players and left our defense exposed – that wasnt the first time he did that).

    So maybe Albiol would best be played as a DMF or a RB. Id prefer the later. He definitely shouldnt be a CB.
