First Pre-Season Match
By: Cesar | July 24th, 2007
The tedious, yawn-inducing season known as ‘pre-season’ got underway today as Valencia kicked off against Lokomotiv Sofía in Ermelo, Holland.
500 people with nothing better to do showed up and watched captain David Albelda receive two yellows and an early trip to the showers, David Villa miss a penalty and the debuts of Alexis, Sunny, Mata and Arizmendi in a 0-0 draw.
I didn’t see the game but it sounds like our boys are a tad bit slow and out of it. What can you expect, right?
I’m not a big fan of friendlies and pre-season. I’ve seen Valencia play a handful of them and except for the curiosity factor of seeing new acquisitions, I find them quite yawn-inducing. But that’s just me. I do see how people can find them entertaining.
And truth be told, if the Valencia-Inter Milan game was available this weekend in the States, I’d go watch it. I’d be inebriated by the 25th minute, but I’d be there.
Anyways, it’s nice to see Valencia back. And don’t they look spiffy in their new shirts?
I have to get me one. Now what player should grace my back?
In the past, the honor went to Aimar. A few years back, Vicente had the spot on my senyera.
I’m thinking Joaquin, Villa or Silva for this season’s model.
I would love to get a Canizares one, but I saw someone wear the goalkeeper kit and it looks ridiculous. So who should I get??
On to other news, it was reported in the Spanish press (i.e. MARCA and AS) that Valencia were interested in swapping striker Fernando Morientes for Lyon midfielder Kim Kallstrom. Kallstrom’s the latest name bandied around after the negotiations for Porto’s Lucho Gonzalez broke down. (I’d do a profile of Mr. Kallstrom, but I’ll wait until he’s signed, sealed and delivered. No need to waste bandwidth a la Sneijder, Anelka, Lucho …)
My reply to this is ARE YOU CRAZY??
How can the people running Valencia even entertain the idea of moving Moro?
It’s utter insanity! The guy’s done such a good job with the club, partnering with Villa, leading the Champions League in scoring for much of the season. Besides, who would take his spot? Angulo?!? Arizmendi?!!? Oh, please no … even the great ‘Nando said in today’s MARCA that he doesn’t intend on leaving.
Let’s leave this issue alone, because it’s pure lunacy. Moro needs to stay. He’s vital to the club’s success …
David Villa’s happy for the offers made for him, but he’s glad Valencia kept him. (Here for you Spanish readers)
And Vicente wants to play 30 or more games this season. How about 5? (Here for you Spanish readers)
And I can’t wait until the real fun begins in about a month.
I am swamped with work. More later, my Valencia friends …

From the looks of that picture they are in preseason posing mode too. Gotta work off the rust before the front row players can get the proper squat going.

So i just finished watching the game online at http://www.canalgv.com/canalgv/app/player/default.cfm?int_ElementId=1493&int_LanguageId=1
Ok here are my thoughts. They looked very rusty in the centre midfield and the defence made some serious mistakes in front that they managed to recover from due more to the lack of quality for their opponents than their own skill. The forwards looked slow and out of place most of the game. They were not taking it seriously. That is except for Mata and Sunny who worked their asses off and i have a new found respect for Mata on the left flank young fast and hard working. Joaquin also played very well on the opposite flank very quick but ultimately was a foul magnet more than anything due to his crosses being off their mark more often than not.
So yeah it was a friendly but ultimately the defence looked shakey and the centre needs some magic man to tie it toegther.. Morientes wasnt paired with Villa wich i think is the secret to last seasons success.. Villa’s feet with Morientes head.
We need somebody to take Edu’s spot in the midfeild as a playmaker that has his quick pass style and timing and the wingers need to learn to acurately feed the ball to the forwards. And the defence needs an overhaul because defence wins leagues not offence.Posted from

I’m going to London for the Emirates Cup; will try to report on the matches when I get back (though I have to confess the reports are likely to be more than a little Inter-focused).

i pretty much agree with our friend javier from canada. i wasnt that impressed with the game. but then again, it was a friendly, right?
i thought that i was gonna to see some nice play of the team and partically from silva and villa. shamefully it turned to be a sort of disaster with the players in front not able to create well teamplayed chances. our defense made some huge mistakes and, like javier told, if our opponents where tougher it easily could have turned into 1 or maybe even 2 goals. the backline is seriously something that must get worked on.
villa was taking the game not seriously enough, i think. just like silva. because with the talent that those guys are blasted they can take the fight to each big team, like we saw before in the uefa champions league. so why not against a team, with all respect, like lokomotiv sofía?? and then there is something else…
our leadman in the attack, david villa, agained missed a penalthy…just like 1 or even more couple times at the end of the season in la liga, correct me if i am wrong. what’s up with that?sunny really impressed, again. i dare to say that these youngster has everything it takes to be a superb central midfielder. anyway, it just was a friendly. friendly games are just to experiments things, even though i must say that i cant wait till the game against inter is on!! bring on internazionale, cause i hate nothing more alongside real madrid then you fuckers!! truly hope that villa can kick some asses and cause some damage saturday, in london.
@cesar
not that aimar is gone it’s a hard decision, isn’t it? i would pick david silva. the guy was the revelation last season, is still very young and can become only better and better. i think europe still hasn’t seen the half of him. he is one of the greatest big young guns outhere and is now already a very important piece of his club, how many young players can say that?? silva it is hehe..AMUUUUUUUNT LOOOOOOOOOS CHEEEEEEEEEES!!
