First Game in the Books
By: Cesar | September 1st, 2008
As first games go, this is about as good as you can get.
Valencia crushed Real Mallorca 3-0 at the Mestalla on Saturday night in the opening match of the new season. If you compare this to last season’s shenanigans, a 3-0 defeat to Villarreal, we’re doing ok.
The Basque Kevin Costner Unai Emery (I hear Gol TV used that line in their game commentary? They’re reading the blog!!) has this team playing like a solid unit, using one-touch passing and slick ball movement to confound the opponent.
Kudos to the squad for lifting their heads off the mat after the embarrassing loss to 9-man Real Madrid in last week’s Super Cup.
Tidbits:
- David Villa looks a man possessed. He was everywhere. Rumors persisted (in Real Madrid trash rag MARCA as well as Real Madrid English language lovers goal.com) that Los Merengues were to make a late push for El Guaje, but we all know that’s rubbish.
Villa is fundamentally solid with the ball and extremely deceptive. The guy’s in his prime and a certifiable football superstar. Enjoy him while he’s here. He’s the Real Deal.
- Villa’s counterpart David Silva was a beast in his own right. The guy’s like a ninja, fluid with the ball at his feet, calm and collected. A joy to behold. And he plays for us! How’d this happen??
Great pass to Pablo that set up Villa for the first goal. Wonderful all-around play. Just a sick player to behold right now.
- Surprise by Emery in selecting the newly purchased Renan to start in goal over shaky incumbent Timo Hildebrand. I understand the logic behind it. Emery wants to light a spark under the German giant’s buttocks. Still, a bold move. Renan just arrived from the Olympic Games in China, practiced once and was thrust onto the Mestalla scene. He played adequately but wasn’t really tested all that often.
“I thought about it before the game and it was a difficult decision to make. It is necessary to motivate him (Hildebrand) to work because the season is long and everyone will have a chance each week.
It is logical that he is annoyed. But we have 23 players and only 11 can play,” Emery explained.
So there you go …
What did Renan think? “On the Saturday morning, before the game, the coach asked me if I was ready to play and I told him that I was. After the game he congratulated me,” the keeper told reporters.
“I felt at home, that is all I can say, because it is difficult to have any other impression after playing just one game. Fortunately everything turned out well. I am happy with the way that I played and with the team’s performance.”
So are we.
- Miguel is like the Energizer bunny, no? He’s everywhere.
- Albiol and Alexis looked decent in the middle. But again, were Valencia really tested in this area most of the evening?
- I liked the energy Manuel Fernandes showed upon his arrival in the 20th minute. If this kid gets some minutes under his belt, the little rust he exhibited will shed away. I think he could be a force in the Valencia midfield.
- I’m liking how Vicente is turning into the super sub of this team. We all know how brittle the native Valencian player is. So maybe if he only gets 20 minutes a game, he can set up a few goals, score a few goals and rev up the home crowd. I truly love this guy and only wish him the best.
- Unai Emery seemed pleased after the game.
“Mallorca started better but I think that the first goal was crucial for us,” Emery said in the post-match conference, while studying scripts for his next movie.
“We improved in the second half and we were superior to our rivals. We played much better and we deserved the win,” he added.
- Next up? Unai’s ex-club Almeria in 2 weeks time. Spain plays a World Cup qualifier in that period, so expect the team to still be in tip-top shape considering the national team is filled with Valencia players.
To view the goals and the best moments of the Real Mallorca match, please click here here here. You won’t be disappointed, save with the fact there’s no audio. Honestly, isn’t the Valencia web site the absolute pits?
In other news:
- The transfer deadline ends tonight at 6pm New York time. No word yet on whether we’ll buy anyone. Milito? Huntelaar? Who knows? Oh! Did you hear Real Madrid want David Villa??
- We have one new player. His name is Nacho Gonzalez and he’s a Uruguayan midfielder. Before you can sneeze the word ‘Nacho’ out, he’s off on loan to Newcastle United. See you soon.
- So Joaquin has decided to stay with us. Apparently, a big European club, some say it was Tottenham, some say it was Inter Milan, approached the goofy-grinned Andalusian with an offer.
But the former Betis man, who breast-fed until the age of 7 (”My Mum breast fed me until I was six or seven. The doctor says that’s why I’m so strong”) decided to stay with us and fight for his place.
I never wanted Pisha to leave. I’m glad he’s staying. I just hope he doesn’t get frustrated and press too much, as he did last season. He’s as talented a winger as there is in Spain. All he needs is to put it all together.
- I’m as big a Phil Ball fan as you’ll find. The ESPN Soccernet.com Spanish scribe gives his assessment of the coming Valencia season and the week that was in Spain.
Valencia hammered Mallorca 3-0 to dispel some of the gloom that was still around in the summer, but at the time of writing Real Madrid were still insisting that they would attempt to sign David Villa before the Monday close of business. It makes you wonder why they didn’t simply begin the process post-Euro 2008, instead of flirting so ridiculously with Cristiano Ronaldo, but there you go. Villa and Silva are still at the Mestalla, Albelda is back, as is Angulo, and their young manager Unai Emery is clearly a bit of a star, but there are still boardroom disputes to settle, an unclear new stadium project and the weight of last season’s traumatic events still hovering in the air. This season should be less disastrous (it would be difficult to surpass last season’s collective farce) but a serious challenge in the league looks unlikely.
We’ll agree to disagree on that last part.
And the Guardian’s Sid Lowe? What do you think?
And then, as fate-tempting tradition dictates, there is Valencia. New coach Unai Emery has already worked under two presidents and three sporting directors since taking over, the club still has two stadiums - one it can’t sell and one it can’t build, and that self-destruct button is still there whispering: “Go on, press me, I dare you. You know you want to.” But with Juan Soler properly gone this time, the civil war should be over - and if ever there was a guarantee of success it’s the departure of the man with the ruddy cheeks and tache.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Three more notes:
- Condolences to the family of Valencia legend Manolo Mestre, who died this weekend aged 73. Mestre was our captain and coach and played 14 seasons with Los Che.
- Watched the Liverpool-Aston Villa match yesterday morning and it was a veritable Valencia reunion at Villa Park. Fabio Aurelio and John Carew walked off arm in arm after the game, surely chatting about old times. Rafa Benitez was there as was his new assistant coach Mauricio Pellegrino.
All we needed was Gaiza Mendieta and we could have fielded a full reunion squad.
- Big ups to reader Daniel, who’s off to his native Trinidad this week. Thanks for making it out every week to watch our beloved, win, lose or draw. You’ll be missed here in New York!
The Valencia fans are out there. We just need to find them! If you’re in New York, make sure to come out for a match. It’d be great to meet you! AMUNT!!

@johnnie
Your right, we need a striker like villa but i dnt think diego milito is the striker to replace villa! we ned smone thts good with his feet plus he has to be fast! so he not only could score like villa but also produce the tornado tht villa causes in the oponent’s defence line. and milito is not tht player. milito is like morientes, slow and a finisher, milito without a good midfield tht would feed him balls to his legs would not even score one goal! he is slow and is blind! only time he scores is when they give him the ball with a wide open net, where all hes got to do is kick!…id buy eto cuz he is a player tht could replace villa! or torres-tevez u get the point.Posted from

Rumbo a Manchester. Se acabó el culebrón Robinho con desenlace inesperado. Se marcha a la Premier, sí, pero no al Chelsea, destino con el que tanto había insistido, sino al Manchester City. El precio, 42 millones…. HA! Makes you think that he really just wanted to get out of Madrid.
I agree with martijn, Mata deserves a mention. I love watching that youthfulness run around the field. At least we now know for sure that Villa won’t be going anywhere… (barring something RIDICULOUS) but it’s also upsetting that we won’t be getting any of those desperately needed reinforcements. Does anyone know anything about the construtcion of the new stadium? I was reading the website for it, but just like valenciacf.com, it sucks something fierce. At least there are pretty pictures to look at… Cesar, when are you gonna make it to Valencia?

@ John,
funny thing is he won’t. He was looking forward to play alongside Villa at Valencia, cause he would make up for the lack of length in our attack. He doesnt earn that much, if im not mistaken a total of 2,4 million net in 3 years. That means 800,000 euro a year. According to Marca that is… I can not see why we could not get him, even for the difference in transferfee to be made up by upping his salardy if needed. Bad choice Valencia.Cause… @ Ali,
Milito might be a different type of striker than Villa, that what makes him good for us. Morientes is indeed an older version, but check out Milito’s scoring average. At Genoa he scored 33 times in 59 games, at Zara 51 times in 108 games. He always scores, and we have just the perfect midfield to supply him, cause our 3 attacking midfielders bring so much creativity and danger, that he would be perfect to substitute Villa and still finish the attacks… Now we only have Morientes, he wont cover for Villa. And i believe against weaker teams, we could play with 2 strikers and Silva behind them, so Milito should be the second. My 2 cents, but i dont think it was smart of Valencia to just sit and do nothing…Btw, according to the media, Calderon called Soriano 3 times the last days, increasing the bid upto 60 million euros. But Soriano didnt even wanna negociate, Villa is not for sale.
Maduro and Viana staying btw, no suitable clubs for them

@johnnie i was just about to post what i read on as.com. Said Calderon did call Soriano but he said no thanks.

Great, not bad flurry of activity at the end, if only we managed to sign a striker. Maduro and Viana in the middle will be good cover, we’ll be forced to play one of them by November I’m sure due to injury/suspensions. Hopefully we don’t have any injuries up front until January, at which point we should definitely get another striker, even only on a 6 month loan as cover for the rest of the season. Hopefully our CBs stay fit too so Helguera will have no need to see any playing time.

I was very happy with the result. Despite some sore spots - Albelda and Moretti - I think we played well. Villa could have had at least one more. He and Silva just play brilliantly. I can’t wait for Joaquin’s debut. I agree with you comment regarding Vicente, he seems well suited to come in as a sub and provide a spark - without injury. Hope we can keep it up. Barca and Real took L’s and my boys from Pamplona gave Villareal a draw - couldn’t have asked for a better opening weekend. Let’s keep it up. Hopefully Emery’s old boys don’t know any secrets that can hurt us. Safe travels Daniel - hope your moving doesn’t thwart your visits to the blog. AMUNT!

“This season should be less disastrous (it would be difficult to surpass last season’s collective farce) but a serious challenge in the league looks unlikely.”
Yeah Phil, no one looked at Valencia twice as well the year we became Liga champions because Beckham was hawking all the limelight for his arrival and all was so sure he’d take the cup for Madrid with his long ball and freekicks…ha ha
I heard The Basque Kevin Costner too. Love his celebration for the 3rd goal as if it was our first and his energetic non-stop coaching on the sideline. Great to see.

Great game and a great start to a new season. Silva and Villa were superb as were Mata and Fernandes.
There is one thing I couldn’t understand, which is the signing of another midfield when Valencia has more midfielders than they could handle. When you’re talking about the senior more experienced midfielders we have Baraja, Albelda and Edu, if you want to invest in the young then Fernandes, Sunny and Banega comes to mind, the latter whom I vehemently believes will one day make it big. So then why did we sign another midfielder? If it was because we don’t have enough in our squad for this season, then why was he loaned out? Is Nacho an Uruguayan prodigy? I sure hope so.
All in all, it was a beautiful day to see us start the campaign off in flying colors while Real and Barca didn’t do so well >=p

I thought Phil was an astute commentator but there are several places where he missed the mark:
- “The mass export of players has not happened, and Deco remains the only real loss of genuine talent for this campaign - but he’s Brazilian/Portugese anyway.” - the lines preceding this imply that English League is far superior to La Liga. Thats a useless debate but surely no “expert” would have predicted a mass exodus. As far as talent loss is concerned there were more “genuine talents” who moved to Italy from Spain but probably Phil cant look beyond England.
- “Chelsea would be mad to pay any more than £10m for him(Robinho), but logic has long since departed the European football scene. Arjen Robben is a far better player, and Madrid know it.” £10m would be a steal for Robinho and I dont know how one can claim with so much confidence that Robben is far better when they have such different roles.

Hi, some of ypou are asking about the team. The news in Superdeporte this morning (the paper not online one)
is that there is no offers for Zigic (Hes turned down Racing) Maduro or Viana, so they are in till the winter break together with
Hildebrand, Curro Torres,Albiol,Marchena Albelda,Villa,Baraja,Morientes,Angulo,Del Horno,Renan,Vicente,Heñlguera,Mata,Joaquinm,Fernandes,Pablo,Alexis,Silva,Edu,Miguel,Moretti,
Thats the lot, We have very good material there, the best for years, they just want a good enough coach to motivate them and bring them up to the mark. Emery however will find getting into the Champions spot far harder than bring Almeria up to 8th place. There are only 4 places.
Madrid and Barca are always in there somewhere and for the other 2 we have Seville, Atletico and Villareal already fighting for them. To be honest I cant see us making that spot and will be lucky for 5th…AlmendrasPosted from

I disagree with you 100% Almendras. I see us finishing top 4 easily this season. Real Madrid and Barcelona do not have better squads than we do IMO, and I think we are stronger than Villareal, Atletico and Sevilla. Our biggest opponent is our in club turmoil, once we keep a lid on that we should be challenging for the title. Che for la liga this year! You heard it here first!

i agree and disagree with u daniel.. i disagree about r.madrid now having a better squad than we do! they have a lot more quality in every line! they have
-defence-canavaro sergio ramos drenthe and pepe!
-where shall i start and where shall i end with thier middle line! they have guti, vdv, sniejder, gago, diarra.
-offence- robin, van nestelreoy, raul, saviola.
not menssioning casillas
the only world class players i think we have now.. miguel- silva-villa- juaquin-.( we have other good players but i cant compare mata to robin and V. nestelroy or raul! etc.)
while i think world class players they have. sergio ramos, pepe, canavaro. vdv, snijder, roben, van nestelroy and casillas.
I think if real madrid have a good coach they could beat us up and down the field anyday anytime with thier squad! truth hurts but its the truth! but due to thier stupid unlucky coach they r not doing very well.and i agree with you that we r for sure stronger than villa real,a bit stronger than sevilla and i thnk tht atletico is a bit stronger than us!! so as i see it, the top four is between Valencia, atletico, Real madrid and barca.
i dnt thnk barca will do its magic with htier new coach! he just doesnt have what it takes to be a coach i think from what i have seen until now! barca is chaos!
we wont have espanyol and mallorca and racing to beat us! czz last season they were the atrongest but not all of them lost thier talents! or thier coaches! ex. racing, getafe.Posted from

okai i might have exagerated, madrid wouldnt beat us up and down the field, but with a good coach i think out of 10 games theywould beat us 6 tiimes.

Madrid have by far the best and strongest squad in Spain, and are probably a sure thing to win la liga this year if they don’t have any internal strife.games against Madrid this season will be tough but we should win at home. Barca are half the team they were last season and will really struggle. if Valencia play well Barca will give them an easy six points this season. Sevilla are finished and don’t even look like the side they were last season their coach will be fired very soon. atletico are not as stong as they claim and probably find it hard to do well in the champions league and La liga. Villarreal will also struggle to play well in europe and La liga. So Valencia will have a good chance of a top 4 finish they may even finish second.

I just don’t think Madrid are that good, honestly. Half the time Cannavaro is a joke and a front line of Van Nistelrooy, Raul and Saviola is better than Villa, Silva and Mata only in the wildest of imaginations. Guti is inconsistent, and so is Robben (see Robben’s performance last week vs. Deportivo). On form with our strongest 11 playing well, we should beat EVERY team in La Liga. What will probably kill us is our lack of depth and the resulting shambolic defending.

no team can beat every other team in la liga even if they were to play their best football every week, La liga is far too strong. Madrid have better defenders and better midfielders, we are just about even with them in terms of forwards Higuain - Mata, Moro - Raul, van Nistelrooy - Villa, Angulo - Saviola. We can beat Madrid at the Mestalla no doubt but winning at the Bernabeu without Real’s directors and coach being at each others throat will be extremely hard. Only if the infighting at Madrid was to last the whole season, would Valencia be able to win La liga and not even Calderon and Schuster can quarrel for a whole season.
