Espanyol and Sentimentality
By: Cesar | May 1st, 2009
Call me sentimental but this video on Foroche TV of Valencia’s 2-1 victory over Espanyol in 2002 at the Mestalla pulled out lots of Valencia CF sentimentality and emotion.
For the ones that lived through it, what a game! For the ones who came to the club a bit later, watch and imagine what it was like …
As Wikipedia puts it:
In the second part of the season, (Rafa) Benítez’s team suffered a small setback after losing 1-0 in the Santiago Bernabéu to Real Madrid, but they recovered from this setback and achieved four victories and two draws in the following six games. The games against Las Palmas, Athletic de Bilbao, Alavés, Real Zaragoza and Barcelona.
In one of those crucial games they would come up against Espanyol, Valencia were trailing 1-0 at half-time and a man down too with the dismissal of Carboni, but after two goals from Baraja, Valencia achieved a 2-1 victory. Furthermore, Real Madrid’s defeat in Anoeta to Real Sociedad left Valencia with a three-point lead at the top of the table.
I’ll never forget that game. I was in a Spanish restaurant in New York, watching the match by myself, trying to hear the lone TV showing the game in a corner of the main hall. People milled about, but no one cared about the Valencia match. Carboni gets a red card. Espanyol goes up by one. But slowly, Valencia starts building some momentum and score a goal. Then, with time winding down, Baraja nets the second and the Mestalla goes absolutely bonkers. As did I, with restaurant viewers imagining what hallucinogenic drugs I was on.
Getting the updates from Anoeta as Real Madrid were getting crushed 3-0 to Real Sociedad while Valencia were pulling off the impossible at the Mestalla … it was pure bliss …
Then the following week at Malaga, with a chance to win the championship … I sat at Nevada’s, cynical Barca and Madrid fans mocking me, telling me this would be a one-and-done.
“Hey, everyone gets lucky once!”
Who cared? When Roberto Ayala scored a sky high header to put us in the lead and calmed the boisterous crowd down by asking for patience, I couldn’t contain myself.
When Fabio Aurelio sealed the championship with a goal near the end of the half, I laughed, I got misty, I drank … It was celebration time.
My Valencian friend drove around the city waving his Valencian flag for all to see, proud of our club’s achievement. We decided to have a drink at the same restaurant I watched the Espanyol game at. We were so loud with our singing and dancing, the Madrid fans at the bar asked us to continue our party in a separate room or leave. We chose the room and caused a ruckus I’m sure they haven’t seen until the Euro 2008 championship!
Here’s a video chronicling the entire 2001/02 season, Valencia’s first league championship in 31 years.
Enjoy!
I want to feel this way again … I want to see Valencia pull off the impossible … I want to know that it’s not just about the money, but also about heart, tenacity and a will to win.
Valencia c. 2001/02 had that team, with a bunch of no-names like Rafa Benitez, Mauricio Pellegrino, Djukic, Mista, Rufete, etc.
Why can’t Valencia c/ 2009/10 do that? Villa, Mata, Silva, Vicente, Alexis, Albiol …
In so many ways, the current incantation of Valencia CF is way more talented than that title team.
But that team pulled victory from defeat, played together and never let an opponent dominate them, even in losing.
We’re starting to see the same kind of style from Unai Emery’s boys. Let’s see how they do this weekend against Espanyol. And let’s ride back to the Mestalla and blow the title race for Real Madrid next weekend … just because we can …
If you can’t tell already, I have a DEEP affection for this club. I’m not from Valencia, but Valencia is a part of me …
Some of my affection stems from my time living there. Some from the fun moments I’ve associated with the club, like meeting players in Valencia or watching matches with strangers and new friends.
Others come from moments like the Valencia-Espanyol game.
I think ESPN’s Bill Simmons said it best today when talking about the classic Chicago Bulls-Boston Celtics that’s going to a Game 7 tomorrow:
We love sports for the simple reason that we never know when this will happen. It rarely does. We watch a lot of crummy games. We watch sporting events that had potential to be great and weren’t. We watch sporting events that almost made it, but one dumb thing happened to screw it up: A foul at the wrong time, a penalty, a two-base error, whatever. We keep watching. We keep hoping. And when everything clicks, it’s blissful.
Isn’t it though?
AMUNT! Hope you enjoyed my sentimental blog post …

there is nothing Valencia can learn from Man U as Man U is not Managed particularly well but the person who owns Man U is extremely rich… Man U has a debt of a little more than a billion dollars…. anyway i agree with kyle there is no need to talk about teas that we are not playing and are not in la liga.
Villa seems to be sick of all the repots linking him to Real.
From EFE
The attacker made these statements to Channel 9 when asked if he had known who was president of Real Madrid and could be submitted to the upcoming elections in the Madrid club. “Normally, Florentino Perez calls me four or five times a day, more or less,” said Villa, ironically, who said more seriously: “I am already tired of this, I want to work full four matches left to be among the first. The rest I do not mind anything now.

@ Kyle
haha mate did u see what that company of Soler was about? Assets of that company did not exceed 50 million euros, and Soler has hundreds of millions of euros. ONE of his companies went bankrupt, how? Last year it had a debt of around 60.000 euros, a company which supported cultural events and stuff, cinemas, theaters, etc. Now this year he made it bankrupt by putting a huge debt on the company, papers said he might have been making the debt so he could pay new shares for Valencia.Just to make things clear, Soler is no way broke, he lost some money, didnt we all, but he still has a billion euro company which might not have its best days but in no way is filing for bankrupty
So i still have hope they will buy shares, but frankly it wont happen simply cause Soler doesnt WANT to, he even wants to sell his current shares, so why do we expect them to even buy MORE shares??Posted from

Barca oust Chelsea, 1-1 in Stamford Bridge. Now they must be CL winner so that Valencia qualify directly to group stage of CL next season.
Please everyone support Barca in the final for the sake of our Beloved.
Amunt!

Justice was served in London – the ref sucked, Chelsea certainly had penalty appeals, the red card to Abidal was nonsense, but in the end, it was karma. Don’t play anti-football and expect to advance to a final. They were a man up and didn’t kill off the game by getting another goal. Vamos Barca en la final. Back to Valencia, I’m with you chaps at Nevada’s in spirit. I’m actually having a Valencia party at my apt – got a full house, with only one Madridista, pretty good odds.

Yup! It surely needed someone like lillo to put some live here!
I cannot believe that Valencia lost agaisnt Espanyol. They had their chance to do nothing! A win, a lost or a mere draw would have changed nothing.
Now, they really need to get up and face Villareal who’ve been in a bad run recently. I hope the team can outplay them by using Vicente!

Oh look, someone mentioned English football… Chelsea deserved to win on the night. Sorry but having 1 shot on target in 90 minutes is pretty much anti-football itself ;D. Seriously, Chelsea should have had 2 or 3 penalties and had the best chances from open play. Barcelona again showed they have a huge problem playing against English sides who can defend well against them. But they got a bit of luck on the night and Iniesta took his goal well. In the end, all that matters is that they won.

I mentioned the cl match because it was exciting, I didn’t go on a tirade about how awesome manu and the epl is. I then transitioned into Valencia. Let’s just drop it. Should be no antagonism in here, and I apologize if I contributed to any of it.

@ Lillo. Well, at least a Spanish team was involved.

Barcelona had a bad game. but its because Chelsea played against them the same effective way Valencia did. The difference is that in home and away matches like this you need to score goals. Chelsea did not.. yo cant rely on the ref giving you penalties. And so there you have it. They sealed their fate with a risky tactic that nearly paid off.
But didnt.
Manchester United vs Barcelona will be a great final.
Now this weekend Real madrid vs valencia. Both comming off big losses. I hope Pablo has a great game and leads us to victory.

Except for Barca’s defense is gonna be depleted. Alves, Marquez, and Abidal will all be gone. I dunno about Saturday’s game – I’m confident, but at the same time, the loss to Barca may backfire on us – I think Real will come out motivated. I hope so – I wanna beat them at their best. Amunt!

Hola guys, so now if barca wins the CL 4th place will go to CL without playing 4th place of other league? anyone…?

That is the part which is unconfirmed…we tried to research but noone can confirm it…although UEFA grants a spot for the defending champions and top 3 in the league..i dont think platini would allow that..he would give that slot to some team from romania or slovakia in hope of making football global

ManU won the CL last year. Did the 4th place team from England go straight to group stage? I don’t think they did…

@Kyle: Liverpool played play-off against Liège – no group stages before that.

Letter from Claudio Lopez to Valencia fans http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/2508/cartaclaudiolopez.jpg Cesar maybe you can use this for your next story.
Kyle,Morientes is saying that he knows that he wasn’t usefull to the team, and that he wants to stay, and maybe finish his career at Valencia, but he knows his future is away from Valencia, and he doesn’t know where he will play.Posted from

Lol,kyle didn’t ask that question,Dynamo fan did,so my response about Morientes is for him.
