Espanya!
By: Cesar | June 4th, 2007
This weekend brought us Valencia’s talents gracing the international stage in Euro 2008 qualifying. No less than five Che graced the field in Spain’s laborious 2-0 victory over Latvia.
It was La selección’s third victory in a row, leaving Valencia-Light in third place in Group F with 12 points from six games. They’ll expect to make that 15 when they meet Liechtenstein in Vaduz on Wednesday.
Who else but striker extraordinaire David Villa opened the scoring for the Spanish, even though the goal looked more like an own goal than a masterful work of finishing.
Nevertheless, the job’s done and the six Valencianistas on the squad (Villa, Marchena, Joaquin, Angulo (ANGULO?), Silva, Albelda) now prepare for Group F minnows Liechtenstein.
Speaking of Valencia’s domination of the national team, Quique Sanchez Flores attributes some of our clubs ills this season to this.
‘One of the heaviest burdens we have had to bear this season is that we have become the team that provides most players for the national side,’ Sanchez Flores was quoted as saying in the Sport newspaper on Friday.
‘Despite suffering a host of injuries this season this team has been the basis of the national team. It obviously shows we have good players but it makes big demands on us too.’
You can’t fault him on that. It’s certainly a source of pride to know we have the most players on the national team. But besides that it takes a physical toll.
Euro qualifying, Champions League, Copa Del Rey, La Liga … all after a World Cup summer.
When do these guys get a break?
The Spanish season ends near the end of June this season, leaving the players with a few weeks off before the pre-season begins. What time will we have to get healthy? What about Champions League qualifying, which takes place in early August?
I never trust Quique’s words, but he may be right here. The national demands are taking a toll. Still, it’s great to see our players gracing the national stage.

Some news:
- From triballfootball.com comes this nugget of news. ‘Valencia are closing in on Juventus striker David Trezeguet.
Marca says an agent close to Trezeguet, Daniel Fonseca, has been in Valencia over the last few days.
Fonseca is also close to Valencia sports chief Amedeo Carboni and advises Trezeguet’s Dad, Jorge, who acts as the striker’s sole representative.’
That would be interesting, eh?
- Reader Johnnie Walker of the Netherlands is making a plea. Let him tell you …
‘Fellow Valencianistas, we made a petition to ask the club to do everything they can to get Wesley Sneijder to Valencia. Read the petition and sign it mates, cause we all need your votes. This will be send to Mestalla / Soler and hope it can make a difference.’
If interested, the petition is linked here!!! Good idea! You have to love the passion!
Here’s the text of the letter:
To: Mr. Juan Bautista Soler/Valencia C.F.
Attn: Mr. Juan Bautista Soler
Dear Sir,
We Valencia fans from all corners of the World write to you today asking you a great favour. We dedicated Valencianistas follow all developments of our beloved club with a lot of care and interest, which is why we send you this message. The favour lies in the acquisition of the Dutch player Wesley Sneijder. In our opinion, the club should do whatever in its ability to make Sneijder a Che. This season we badly lacked consistency, energy, drive and creativity in our midfield, a combination of which would have made a big difference in our title race. This is why we are all eagerly anticipating a bid for quality midfield player who can make a difference to our team. Valencia
We were all delighted to hear about Sneijders willingness and desire to become a Valencia player. We know it is difficult to pursue such a player and we all eagerly follow our clubs pursuit of this magnificent midfielder day and night. We ask you to continue negotiating with Ajax and if necessary improve our bid to sign him. We all understand our club has financial limitations, but we hope you can find the resources to get him to Valencia. He is our future leader, the kind of player people would go to the Mestalla to watch. We need players who can be the difference between two sides and we firmly believe Sneijder is such a player. So we would once again kindly request you with all our love for Valencia CF to continue pursuing Wesley Sneijder. The greatest club in the world deserves such a player, and we should not miss out in this given opportunity!
Thank you for your time and effort to you are making to help our clubs reach great new heights. With never ending support,
Amunt
Valencia Supporters
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
