villamal.jpgWhat more can I really say?
I suppose this team just isn’t good enough for the Champions League.

Today’s 2-0 (!!) thrashing at the hands of Norway’s Rosenborg at the Mestalla, Ronald Koeman’s first game as coach, essentially eliminates us from Champions League play for the rest of the season. The best we can hope for is a third-place finish and a shot at the UEFA Cup.

I didn’t watch the game, but read it online. It’s apparent that the same deficiencies that flashed brightly under Quique Sanchez Flores are burning bright under Koeman. Look, it’s his first game. There’s not much he can do to fix this.

It’s just I figured the team would try to pull it together in fast fashion for their new gaff, for their shot at European glory, for pride, for something. Instead, we get this display of nonchalant play. Let’s give credit where it’s due, though. Rosenborg came in and played a slick, efficient game. They wholeheartedly deserve the 3 points and the victory.

But what happened to our mighty Valencia? Where’s the team we know and love?

Where do we point the finger at now for what’s deficient in this team? Flores? Soler? Koeman? Ranieri? Zapatero? I have no idea.

What I do know is that it’s a tough, bitter pill to swallow.

When I started this blog, I did so with the intention of writing about glorious European nights, magnificent displays against the giants of Spanish football and posting trophy-filled photos. Instead, we’ve fired a coach, have a rag-tag set of defenders and no clue as to how to fix it.

The Champions League is pretty much over. We’re last, two games to go. One at home to Schalke 04, one away to Chelsea. We’re last with 3 points, behind Schalke who have 4, Rosenborg who have 7 and Chelsea who have 8. Basically, we need to win the next two and hope Rosenborg don’t win any. Tough task.

The loss of that Euro Cup money could be quite a blow to Valencia’s transfer booty, especially with our need for a top-class defender.

Well, what more can I say? I’ve whined enough. One door closes and another opens, right? Koeman is here and it isn’t right to expect him to coach his first game and tranfix the team *poof* just like that. It’s going to take time.

I’m just gutted at our lack of ambition today.

Disappointing. If Valencia wants to know what good defending should be like, perhaps they should take some lessons from Rosenberg seeing how well they defended tonight. 20 mins left in the game and why the hell do we have to look defeated already? Where the hell is our fightin spirit?

i personally dont think that rosenburg’s defence can be called great because we never got a chnace to truly challenge their defenders. Our feeding to the forwards was non existant. Our passing was sad and our defence was weak. Even our goaltending was bad. WHERE ARE YOU CANI!

We need a central playmaker now RIQUELME IS ROTTIGN AWAY ON A BENCH GET US THAT MAN & VAN DER VAART!

Dammit, and Valencia have done so well in the Cl in recent years too, putting the so-called ‘big two’ to shame at times.

Koeman’s magic better start working soon.

We have 3 weeks before the next champions league game,”hopefully” enough time for Koeman to bring some stability in defence and give the team a way of playing that will turns things around.
Why or why did the board go for Ivan Huelgara.
I think Poulson from Savilla would be a great addition
to our teams defence, and Diago from Bayer Leverkusen in midfield.

The problem at the mestalla is not entirely a coaching problem as many people have come to think of it:it’s the players. They don’t seem to have any self belief in themselves, maybe you can blame the coach for not motivating them, but if you are a recognized, accomplished international what extra motivation do you need when brushing shoulders with the best teams in europe?Quique flores was let down by his players from the first game of this season(villareal),and in fact, valencia has not registered a single victory against quality opposition this term(exept Shalke but it was a sucker punch by Villa).Quite impressive for a team that has aspiratins to be one of the top clubs in europe. All fingers pointed at Carboni at the end of last season and he left, but results got worse, the fingers then shifted to Quique and he also left(or should i say they got the boot)-Enter Koeman, the team is still shambles, the players don’t even want to impress thier new coach on his fist game in charge. Will we now start pointing fingers at Koeman? The players seriosly need to change thier attritude if things are goig to start working at the mestalla. It will be very sad to see them let Koeman down the way they let Flores down.Valencia is a big team and the players know it;what they don’t seem to know is that other teams will expect them to come out and prove that the’re a big team-this is a test of charecter-something seroisly lacking in the players at Valencia

carboni said he wasn’t surprised with the disaster which is happening in our club.

he critized the management and the president who were clueless, the club overall which insisted to be able on the same “level” as Barca and Madrid but the club itself doesn’t have the strong foundation which is needed to build a “big” team… and also losing the identity….

and he also commented on the “peseteros” like abelda… who openly requested for increasing their salary on public, which is in Italy… it’s a very taboo and embarrassing.

He also spoke about quique… who he thought isn”t an ambitious person… so carboni wasn’t surprised for a few years valencia doesn’t win any major trophy at all

i read this on local newspaper and i think it’s relevant with the condition of the club. what do you guys think??

more urgent… can we qualify for the next round?? if not… will we be the 3rd or 4th??

Well - may I suggest becoming a Real Madrid supporter instead??! Ha!

The angst you are feeling are only too well known by those of us who follow RM and especially the last few years. I think it’s important to remember you are still up there in La Liga and stranger things have happened…a.k.a. 2006/2007 season. At one point I thought Madrid were headed to UEFA, and then somehow we started winning (although miserably - Capello style) and then even more mysteriously Barcelona handed it to us!

So keep the faith my good man Cesar! And remember - ROME was not built in a day! All Hail Cesar!! (And Covet Not Cesar’s Wife!).
