Dead foxes = First trophy of the season.
By: dan_c | July 23rd, 2011
A sign of things to come? I hope so.
Valencia wrapped up a comfortable victory against big-spending and ambitious English second division team Leicester City in Austria some hours ago. In doing so Los Che won the Cup Kärnten as they continued preparations for the new season. They won the best of four competition that also featured PSV and Bursaspor.
While usually it would be a more significant achievement to beat a side managed by Sven Goran Eriksson, Emery and co. and me too will be satisfied with the display.
Valencia lined up as usual with a side mixed with youth and experience. The changes were wrung at half-time. In fact it was virtually a new team in the second 45 as 7 changes were made, including Dani P grabbing his debut. He immediately formed a good partnership with M-Top, and they ran the show from midfield for the rest of the game.
The only goal of the game came soon after the twentieth minute. Jonas and Ari Ad combined well, resulting in a nice goal for our young Brazilian.
As with all pre-season games, much of the point was to build match fitness. Evidently by this performance we are not quite where we need to be yet in this department, but plenty of time to fix that. The Foxes actually had their best spells of the game towards the end of each half, when our two line-ups tired.
The game didn’t give many clues as to Emery’s idea of our first choice starting line-up for next season. We can be pleased to pick up another clean sheet though, against a physically tough side that offered a different challenge to our back line. We need to be ready for all forms of play when we take on the Champo League again next year.
The transfer market has gone very quiet, but for now, especially in the case of players linked with moves away from the Mestalla (Mata for example), no news is good news.
Dani wasted no time in showing his belief that Valencia can compete with the Old firm this season. More extensive analysis of that comment and its merit to come, but in short:
Compared to Barca/Madrid
GK: Solid, but not top quality. Barca and Madrid both have outstanding goalkeepers that often provide the leadership, inspiration and great performances to help the teams over the line. Evidence of how the lack of an outstanding goalkeeper can be the difference between good and great teams is clear in the cases of Arsenal and others.
DEF: No ways! I don’t feel much needs to be said here.
MID: Closest of the sections. Full of youth, verve and quality, with massive potential, if we can hold on to these young men, we won’t be too far off in the near future.
STR: Soldado is class but we need more than one outlet of goals to compete with the best. Madrid and Barca have goalscorers in droves and so always have options to find that goal to win the tight game on a bad day.
STAR FACTOR: We fall short here too. Every top side has many very good players, but also a few great ones who can turn the world on its head in the time it takes Paris to commission a sex tape. Looking at Madrid and Barca, Ronaldo, Ozil, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi. We don’t have that. Maybe Mata in a few years, maybe Soldado given a great season, but unfortunately, unless you have Barcas youth academy, those players need to be bought with cash that we simply don’t have.
CONCLUSION: Sorry Dani, but for now I disagree. We only need to cast our minds back to our 6-3 loss to Madrids bench last year and reflect on the gap in points between us and the top two, and then add our financial turmoil, to see that we aren’t there yet. On a good run of form like the beginning of last season, maybe we can hang around, but not match them for long periods.
I hope and pray that Valencia will humiliate me beyond repair this year and take the Old firm all the way.
May Los Che do to me what Man U and Ferguson did to Alan Hansen.
Amunt
ps. happy birthday johnny

well done valencia, leicester spend over 10 million and they still can’t hit a barn door,it’ll be a laugh watching them fail again this season, everyone’s gona want to beat them !!

-

With all due respect, don’t preen too much, this was very much an experimental LCFC side…only played together 45 mins each, you should be beating teams at our level very easily…… so the reports of the foxes demise is greatly exaggerated…good luck for the coming season…just keep an eye on us, we are going places…

-

Both teams were lacking in fitness but thats only to be expected at this stage of the season.

-

I cant believe people are comparing the 3rd best team in la liga with Leicester City.
Valencia barely had to do anything to win, even PSV proved to be stronger than Leicester City.
The bottom line is that Leicester City are playing in the Championship and thats where they belong.

-

we are one quality cb away from retaining third and if we wanna compete for real in the cl we need a quality rb and another cleaner to compete with topal, maduro and albelda isnt going to help us unless we play against very low table all season.
about winning la liga, it is absolutely impossible for any other team in the world right now, we cant beat ourselves up for winning the league.
11-12 i will be a very happy vcf supporter if we remaine third and perhaps make the qf in cl.
icing on the cake would be averidging 45000+ in mestalla

@moe
A comfortable third place and playing good football along the way it good at the same time close the gap with RnB to 10/15 points, going through the group stage in CL in comfort and reaching least the last 8, reaching semi in Copa are my targets for Valencia and I believe Llorente’s one is similar if not identical. Thoughts are our sporting targets as for other ones it’s simple getting a good atmosphere in Mestalla and getting it filled, reduce the debt more, getting a good shirt sponsor, keep the better players and lose the bad once, play some youth players maybe even promote though this is not as important in Llorente’s agenda, Sell Mestalla and build Nou Mestalla are some of the other targets for the summer/coming season. And I think all are possible to achieve this year and if we achieve most of them that would be great in itself.

Id be happy with 3rd or 4th in la liga, but I think its extremely essential for us to improve on our Copa Del Rey performances and in the CL.

Yay!! always good to start a year with a trophy . Now if we only we could duplicate our previous years runs with an amazing start. Also can any one please tell me how to get tickets for Valencia home matches as I will be visiting Europe this autumn and have to go see a match but I have no idea how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Amunt!!!

To the LCFC supporters, it was a preseason game and so doesn’t mean much, I made that clear, you guys HAVE SPENT MORE THAN US IN THE LAST 2 YEARS ON PLAYERS and both sides were experimental. No offence was intended and come on, it was tongue in cheek, you can see that by the title. I mean really, would we get excited about winning a preseason tournament in a tiny town in Austria? (that was rhetorical)
Salik. Talk to Javier. I can hook you up with his contact details and then you can talk to him.

I just picked up my season tickets. Cant wait to report from Mestalla.
I will start writing again soon.
AMUNT!

Salik. add me to facebook if you need anything while your in Valencia.

Good game to watch, but lets not crow over the other team.
These preseason games are to try out all the new players the result is not that important. In any case Leicester almost drew level near the end. Alves came right out of the goal area and a lob over him just missed the open goal.
Of the new players I was again impressed with Pardo, he is 1.86 tall, was good in defence and you can see him carefully pick his spot before clearing the ball, he is definitely first team material. We should also hang on to Ferghouli this year, he is always in the action and tries all the time. He is a clever footballer and accurate with his passes……Almendras

I’m actually kinda disappointed with the 1-0. I expected us to score at least 3 cause seriously Leicester isn’t a great side. But, as usual in pre-season games, we played so so which is understandable considering the experimenting and such. Hope to see our 4-3-3 with Mata and Tino some day soon. But anyway glad we won, it gives confidence again and thats what pre-season is for. Amunt!
PS Dan thanks for the birthday wishes, partying was hard, very hard

Just came back from the match in Austria v. Leicester. It almost got cancelled due to heavy storms before the match, but it turned out that the 4th division Austrian team has indeed good draining system!
Coup of my visit: a new VCF Joma shirt (white) WITHOUT any sponsors!! For a meager 50 EUR. It’s a great shirt guys (both in design & quality), well worth spending the money, and I adore the black/golden details around the neck & sleeves. Kappa sucked, Nike sucks these days as well. Joma rules!
Now Llorente can sign an ugly shirt sponsor as I own a sponsorless one

-

any news of how many season tickets been sold?

-

@moe: Not sure but they’ve pushed the previous deadline to the 28th or 29th I think.

-

I just want to echo the comments made in te very first reply. You are a total nob. Leicester have just started rebuilding for a future. Valencia are an established Champions League outfit. The surprise would have been had you not won. By all accounts i think the game will have proved very beneficial for the Leicester defence. Like most Leicester fans, I am really excited about the forthcoming season for Leicester as the team begin what we all hope will see our return into the English Premiership. As for your picture of a dead fox, I find highly offensive and not in the least bit humourous. I really our teams meet again in a few years and you will find that foxes never quit.

-

Dan, you say we don’t have quality GKs, you will see what Alves can do. and then you will talk to me again.
as for CBs, yes we need a bit more quality in that area. still an improvement over last season with Rami and i hope Ajax’s Toby comes too.
Midfield: If they work, we will fuck the world of la liga!
Attack: depends on Midfield. and Soldado. and Piatti.
but i have good feelings about it.

-

As for whoever thought of the dead fox you are pathetic. Its only a friendly match for fucksake. Im no pancake expert but i know a tosser when i see one. You complete dick.

-

dan did you draw that? i’m guessing it’s a watercolor.

-

Hi Dan, Dead Foxes? That is our first loss in four or five pre-season games and you are supposedly the third best team in Spain. Yes, we’ve spent ten million pounds this summer on eight players. Wow! Juan Mata alone is worth almost three times that! Champions League and almost matching Barca and Real Madrid. We will be competing with West Ham and Birmingam for top spot in our league this coming season… hopefully. Your lead headed picture has turned me off your team massively. Schoolboy error Dan.

-

lol, cant believe how people get worked up over a meaningless game and photo. Thanks LCFC for the game, really no big deal. Have a sense of humor. Honestly I have never heard of them till this game. Call me immature to the English rugby/football league but I didnt know they had very many fans? Well good luck in your Segunda league this year.

-

Jason L. Sorry mate but my idea of humour is not a dead fox, the mascot of my home team. As you said yourself, it is a meaningless game and therefore there is no need for the picture. But I agree, thanks for a good game.
