Day 9: We’re Not a Big Club Anymore
By: Cesar | March 25th, 2009
Another day, another episode of your favorite soap opera As the Mestalla Turns …
And today, it’s really ‘as the Mestalla turns’ as news broke yesterday that Vicente Soriano wasn’t lying after all … he really did have a buyer for the grand old lady …
Kyle did a good job over at Loco 4 Los Che reviewing everything for you, so I won’t bore you with redundancies.
The main points? The sale was close. Very close. But at the last minute, the buyer wanted the price lowered by €80 million, from €320 million to €240 million. Soriano balked and the deal was scrapped.
The €240 million would have wiped out our debt.
Can’t really blame the guy. You’re offered a price and at the last minute, the purchaser balks? Kind of weird.
Still, that €240 million sure would come in handy right about now, eh?
We could use that to:
- Pay our players, who haven’t been paid in 2 months.
- Start building our new stadium again, which has lied dormant for a month.
- Keep our star players next season.
- Pay off most of our debt.
Alas, it isn’t to be.
And now, the situation’s so drastic, Valencia are on the verge of declaring bankruptcy, possibly a week away.
The hawks are circling, of course. The giants of European football would love nothing more than to pick our bones dry. Such is life in the loosey, goosey world of soccer.
This news, coupled with everything else that’s happened in the past few years at Our Beloved club has prompted Che legend Santiago Canizares to say we can no longer be considered a ‘big club.’
And you know what? He’s right.
We’re no longer in the elites of the European game.
We’re no longer in the same class as the Real Madrid’s, Barcelona’s and Chelsea’s of the soccer world.
We’re back where we used to be, in the class of Malaga, Valladolid and Racing Santander.
You touch the sky one day and you’re back on the ground the next … oh well.
Canizares doesn’t think we’ll keep the likes of Villa, Mata and Silva. Like we didn’t know that.
“I don’t see their futures at Valencia – the club cannot hang on to those kinds of players. The blame doesn’t lie with those who currently run the club, and the people don’t deserve this, but those players should be at big clubs – like Valencia once was. (UGGH!)
“Right now – financially speaking – Valencia is a very small club, and unless there is a huge change and a wealthy group comes and buys the club, those players will move on.
“The three players are worth a lot of money, and what Valencia will have to do is reduce costs by selling shares and those kinds of assets.”
It hurts the former Spain No 1 to talk about his former club in such terms since his time in Valencia was the most fulfilling of a distinguished career.
He said: “It is the club that allowed me to develop my profession during the best years of my career.
“I was lucky to be there when we had great players and great coaches who made the team great. I lived moments which will be very difficult to repeat in the history of Valencia, and that I will always remember.”
Very true …
One more tidbit of news.
Former captain David Albelda could leave soon, too. Kick us while you’re down, why don’t you?
In an interview with Real Madrid daily AS, Albelda said, “I would really like to stay and play with Valencia, but I’m open to anything. It depends on the needs of the club. If one day Valencia decide they don’t want me, then I could well try my hands abroad, for example.”
Is it me or haven’t we been through this before?
Speaking out about his almost murder of team mate and soon-to-be sold Valencia Pichichi Raul Albiol, Albelda said, “I haven’t given it much importance. The only thing I want when I play is to win. It would have been cowardly if I had only said something if the penalty had gone in.”
“What would I have said otherwise? ‘Albi, don’t worry, nothing happened, we will try again next week? There were a lot of emotions at that moment. I didn’t want to fight and things weren’t going to go to far. All I told him was that he had to concentrate until the whistle because any mistakes could cost us and we are already in a delicate situation.” (I guess he does this with his hands around people’s necks?)
“When we reached the dressing room I told him that everyone would talk about that with all the cameras out there. He told me he would go out and tell everyone I would be the Godfather to his child, but could not believe he actually did it.”
But he did …
Honestly, what a muppet show …

Haha man what a response is that to a fight? Albelda: we’ll talk inside when the cameras are off! Albiol: you’ll be the godfather of my daughter? Even Quentin Tarantino wouldn’t have come up with such conversations!!!
About our debt, even in the face of death a man should hold on to his principles, and i am glad Soriano did cause they tried to fuck us over! We might go down cause of it, but at least they can hold their heads high and that’s worth a lot, since Valencia will be back for sure anyway!! AMUNT!!!

Great report, Cesar, thank you! Interesting news…
If I was Gomez, Albelda would kick in England next year and we’d have 4 or 5 extra million. He is just too static and, well, old-fashioned in his play. Look at Fernandes, that’s the future in DM!
Soriano did the right thing when he rejected the deal – too bad the situation has developed so awfully. Now I would take this money, but at this moment I would have reacted exactly the same way.

Ya, I can’t blame Soriano.
Hindsight is 20/20 … now, we’d probably take the money.
But losing 80 million euros like that is just too much …Posted from

I always said Soriano is a man of his words. If someone trys to steal 80M from you at the last minute by changing his mind that’s not businees, that’s robbery attempt.
Glad he turned the fuckers down. Let’s just hope they find a way out of this mess…Posted from

In hindsight he should have taken it, but it seems my perception of Soriano is right; he’s not another Soler, he genuinely cares about the club but Valencia is at this point a victim of the recession. Spain screwed themselves over by overindulging in the real estate bubble.

Hope still prevails…as i thought replacing soriano with javier gomez was a deliberate attempt to take soriano off the limelight and make him work undercover with the sale of mestalla,as the report says still the discussions are ongoing…hope we manage to sell it at atleast 300M euros and we should be fine….i trust the current board to get us out of this mess because finally there is unity and desire to make this work …

why do i think that Albiol’s form will start to rise after that fight! i really think he’ll be great. at the end of that video, there was another clip with Albelda pointing to his head to Albiol, like he was saying: “Man you’re head is empty” ! hah. and he’s like he had enough! like we all did. thanks Albelda. you’re the real captain!

//for the record, I won’t leave this club for anything, if it takes, I’ll watch them in Segunda or Third league… but I wish they’d stay here… Remember that Piojo goal against Atletico (4-1) It was like 45 m strike that keeper couldn’t reach with his hands?
Mestalla was full… ^^Che-ers!

@ bob
i still think he is a snake motherfucker, but than again, thats me and i have grudges against people without reason hehe… But i do hope he helps us out, personal disliking should not interfere with normal business
@ Scarlet
I think ill start supporting Barcelona… not! I hate the other teams to much to start liking them, so no choice but to stick with our broke ass club…Posted from

That’s about the dumbest thing Albigol could think of to end the fight…
Oh and that picture of Cañizares is perfect. He looks like someone just shot his puppy.
I also don’t think Albelda’s going anywhere… I don’t think anyone would want him, not at his current form.

All i want to say is: That titanic song towards the end of the youtube vid was just classic. It’s freakin hilarious. And im probably the only person who thinks so….
The going-ons at this club is telenovela worty alright and Kudos Cesar, in keeping with our telenovelaness, you managed to make me want to cry and laugh at the same time with this entry.Posted from

Actually, we need someone, who can do what Albelda did, in our defense right now. It is showing a serious lack of leadership. Marchena, meh!

Personally, I would have taken the 240ME. The world is in a very bad financial situation and Spain in particular has been hit real hard with it. Even though that 240ME was much less than the value a few months back, it still would have been a fair amount in the current financial situation. Not to mention it would have solved our financial problems for at least 2 more years. Now the stadium will not be ready until a year after it was scheduled to open (which would make us lose about 20-30ME), plus the players are not paid and we will not get to keep our stars.
Whether Soriano cared or not about the club when he declined it was the wrong move and clearly not logical in light of our situation. He should be blamed as much as Soler for this.

@Javier:
I’ll be in Valencia the last matchday of the season against Athletic Bilbao…
Me and a friend of mine. Maybe we could meet. By the way: ticketing of Valencia CF sucks – servicaixa is so unhandy. Do you know where we get tickets from? At youtube a che told me that he was sure the match won’t be sold out – but I have my doubts.

@ El Rey: Yeah I agree that Emery has a problem with choosing players (he made a big mistake with Zigic and Banega, while keeping Morientes and Edu). I really hope we only let Banega go for the right price (i.e. something in the range of 14-16ME) otherwise a midfield with Banega and Fernandes for next year sounds promising.
