Day 8: A Deep Breath

By: Cesar | March 24th, 2009

Feels good to win, doesn’t it?

After their thirst was quenched this Sunday with a dramatic 1-0 win over Racing Santander, Valencia returned to the Levante region’s capital city cognizant of all that lies ahead of them, yet feeling much better.

Still, problems await. The players haven’t been paid, the debt’s sky high, we’re 5 points behind the Champions League spots, etc etc … it goes on and on.

But still … we won on Sunday. Mata scored a beautiful goal. The post helped us out in the 94th minute and prevented Santander from scoring.

We won! For the first time in 8 matches! Right now, that’s all that matters.

Plenty of news today … let’s see what’s new in As the Mestalla Turns

- David Albelda channeled every Valencianista’s frustrations at the end of the Santander match and almost punched out Raul Albiol after the defender gave up a penalty in the 94th minute.

Albiol says everything’s cool with him and the former Che captain.

“If he wants to have dinner with me this evening then I will invite him and if my partner wants then we will make him godfather to our daughter,” he mused.

Guess that’s what happens when you’re almost murdered by your team mate on the pitch …

- Speaking of Albiol, what is it about him? What good do people see in him that I don’t?

He’s called up to the national team for every match. He’s the captain of the squad when Marchena isn’t. And apparently, he’s wanted by many teams.

Today, word that teams in England are salivating at the prospect of Albiol scoring own goals for them.

“If I leave Valencia I would only go to a big club,” Albiol told Sky Sports.

“The Premier League could be perfect because I have always been a fan of the football they play. But I am happy in Valencia at the moment.”

So whose dreams will he crush next season? Liverpool? Chelsea?

I just don’t get it.

I know the guy’s a raw talent. I know he’s versatile – as a defender or midfielder. I know he’s quick, agile and can score (not for his own team, but still …).

But what about his liabilities? For example, all those own goals? His horrible defensive positioning?

True, most of the problems probably stem from the rubbish Valencia midfield and players like Albelda, who can’t hold anyone.

But still … I just don’t see why these clubs are willing to spend up to 20 million Euros for Raul.

- Congrats to Juan Mata, who received his 2nd senior squad call-up this morning, supplanting injured Barcelona ace Andres Iniesta. He’ll join David Villa, David Silva, Marchena (why?) and Albiol (why?) on the national team.

Villa and Silva are injured. They didn’t play our game this Sunday. The team doesn’t want them playing this weekend’s friendly against Chile and the World Cup qualifier against Turkey, just for precautions. Yet they may recover in time to make appearances.

We shall see what becomes of this.

Fancy an interview with the hero of this Sunday’s game? No, not Pablo Hernandez. The scorer, Mata.

Here it is, in Spanish.

- Did we make good signings last summer? Goal.com examines and grades our 2008-09 transfer signings.

Our final grade? A B …

FINAL GRADE: B

Valencia did not have much to work with, but Emery knew the positions that he wanted to strengthen and he and the club have done well to fill those without wasting whatever money was left in the summer. While the goalkeeping problem is now solved, the return of Pablo, along with several players who spent last month on loan has also been wise, and the coach has been able to show that he can identify and attract young talent in Carleto. But perhaps Valencia’s best signing was in fact the trainer himself as Emery’s stock has remained very much intact despite some poor results and some frustration being shown from the fans. Finishing in a UEFA Cup place this term will be seen as an achievement and then a summer of change awaits with Villa and Silva both likely to leave and the club’s financial position being revealed.

- Congrats to former coach QQ Sanchez Flores, who won the Portuguese League Cup with Benfica this past weekend. I hear Pablo Aimar sits bench there? Can’t he come back? Please?

- Finally, itching to see some great Valencia goals?

Check out DynamoFan1953’s channel on YouTube.

He’s got all the latest Valencia goals and uploads them almost as soon as they happen … a definitive bookmark for the Valencia CF connoisseur!

Speaking of YouTube videos, check out this diddy from the Valencia CF team regarding their 90th anniversary. Very cool …

That’s it for today. AMUNT!

I am American. I see an American flag there.
    Ugly jerseys, yes.

And no official word yet of the MLS All-Star game, huh?

    Well, nevermind.

sentimentche.com has published a list of potential transfers in summer, there are pretty interesting players among them and the most expensive one is Miguel Veloso with 15-20 Mio. Euro which is, frankly spoken, just too much for us at the moment. Nevertheless, there are various talents there, check it out:

    @ El_Valencia
They say Miguel Veloso is 12-15, Jan Vertonghen is 15-20 Mio. I’d say turn those 2 prices around, where did they get that man? Nice other players btw, i still this we should get Kalinic, Marcus Berg would also be great but Groningen wont let him go for at least 15 Mio!

About the jersey’s, i’m surprised but they are pretty unconventional, and i like them. The golden jersey is the best they ever got, but its a good stylish DIFFERENT new jersey and it shows Adidas has some creativity. At least in my eyes hehe…

Veloso has a £20 million buyout. So if he wants to move on they’ll negociate down slightly from that price. Bolton almost signed him in the last window, which shows where his stock is really. He isnt as good as his hype. Very slow and for the past season he’s been concentrating more on being the Portuguese Beckham than he has playing football.
    -
The positives would be that A) Valencia should be a lot higher rated by Veloso and his agent than Bolton. That was the stumbling block, that he wanted to go to a bigger club. And B) Veloso and Fernandes were fantastic together for the under 21s at the euros a few years ago. I was watching Portugal as we’d just signed Nani and they both were the stand out players for Portugal together in that midfield.
    -
The list of transfers seems… Well, off. Probably made from Football Manager. Seriously. Camacho? Why would Atletico Madrid be letting go of their 18 year old starlet? Why wouldnt you just use yours instead in Sunny? Madness.
    -
One good name on there though, GOJKO KACAR. We (United) have just invested in two Serbs and have therefore had a lot of Serbians giving their opinions on the two players we signed and the future of Serbian football. And most seem to agree that Kacar is going to be one of the best. I believe he scored 4 goals in one match for the Serbian under 21s a few months ago. Good player it seems and now would be a good time to snap him up before a big club snatches him.

    Read this….
    http://www.valenciapropertyhound.com/press-releases/releaseS9.html

First Parcel of the Mestalla Football Ground Sold for a Whopping €90 Million

The 19th of September was a truly historic day in the history of the Valencian Residential Property Market with the president and majority shareholder in Valencia F.C. paying €90 million for the first parcel of the city’s much loved Mestalla football ground. The purchase was the most valuable in the history of the Valencian Residential Property Market. In 2009 the club will move from its present location off Avenida Aragon to the outskirts of the city close to Norman Foster’s Palacio de Congresos to what will be the most state of the art football stadium in the world. Mestalla is situated in the city’s most expensive area for residential property. In it’s place a total of 9 towers will be built to a height of 17 stories in a mixed development of 660 luxury apartments, offices and commercial units on the ground floors of the towers.

Mr. Soler has let it be known that he is willing to pay the reserve price on the 4 remaining parcels of property belonging to the club if the reserve price isn’t reached at auction. He has therefore laid down a €90 million marker to all other interested parties that if needs be he will buy the 80% of the Mestalla site that belongs to the club. The other 20% belongs to the local government. Mr. Soler’s intervention should guarantee strong capital appreciation in the mid term in the Mestalla area. At present property prices in the area are approaching €4,000 per sqm. The site that Mr. Soler has bought is 2,295 sqm in size with planning permission for 2 tower blocks of 18,400 sqm. He therefore paid just under €5,000 per sqm for the 2 tower blocks that he intends building on the site. With building costs in the region of €1,000 per sqm and associated fees of €500 per sqm plus an appropriate profit margin which would see properties released to the public off the plans going for in the region of €8,000 per sqm with a likely finishing date of 2012 since Mestalla will have to be demolished before any building work can commence.

This is great news for those property owners who have bought quality second hand properties in the Mestalla area.On these figures it would be reasonable to see a 100% increase in property values over the next 5 years. Quality second hand properties can still be found in and around the Mestalla area for €240,000.Mestalla as well as being home to some of the city’s most valuable blue chip companies such as Movistar as well as numerous government offices and accounting firms such as Deloitte has also its own Metro stop as well as being a mere 5 minute drive to the America’s Cup marina and future Formula 1 circuit. There is also a metro/tram connection to the beach.

Valencia continues to go from strength to strength now being among Europe’s top 15 city destinations. The arrival of a Ryanair base in the city is also indicative of the growing confidence among operators such as Ryanair in the city’s continuing prosperity. Sailing’s prestigious America’s Cup returns to the city in 2009 with the arrival of Formula 1 next August for a minimum of 7 years as well as the possibility of the Champions League Final in the city’s new Mestalla football stadium in 2010.

All the more important therefore for serious non resident property buyers to engage the services of the city’s premier property search and property investment company, Valencia Property Hound.

SORIANO COULD HAVE SOLD MESTALLA FOR €240 MILLION, BUT DIDN’T. THE DEAL WAS ORIGINALY FOR €320 MILLION, BUT THE BUYER LOWERED THEIR OFFER AT THE LAST MINUTE. ALSO, JAVIER GOMEZ IS EXPLORING MULTIPLE “EXTREME ALTERNATIVES” TO TRY AND SAVE VALENCIA FROM BANKRUPTCY, WHICH IS NOW A VERY REAL POSSIBITLY. http://loco4losche.com/blogweb/index.php

I will be the first to apoligize to Soriano. We all thought he was full of shit, but he was telling the truth. He did have a buyer lined up. However, he should have sold Mestalla for 240 million. We would be able to keep all our players next year if he sold Mestalla.

Unfortunately, I dont think Soriano deserves all the criticism he has been given here in the first place.
If Soler had a buyer for the Mestella, why did he chicken out and hand-over to Soriano?
What I feel bad about is that Soriano had a deal but it just wasnt good enough.
In our current state, 200M would have gone a long way but thinking deeper, its 140M short so I owuldnt have accepted the deal myself.
The buyer was probably trying to take advantage of our economic situation.
I know we’ll pull through somehow and without NO SHIEK’s wealth.
