Day 7: Finally!
By: Cesar | March 23rd, 2009
Now that’s the way to celebrate a birthday!
On the 2nd anniversary of the Valencia Offside, Valencia CF visited Racing Santander and finally ended their 8-match winless streak, a Juan Mata goal stunning the hosts, who missed a penalty in the dying seconds of the game, 1-0.
Finally! Hallelujah!
A clean sheet! 3 points! A WIN!
Too bad not many of us got the opportunity to watch the match, as just about every outlet known to man didn’t show it.
Oh well. Who cares? 3 points is three points.
A recap? Check out goal.com’s oh-so-wonderful review and Kyle’s observations.
Here’s Mata’s goal … lovely. Gives me goosebumps.
Racing 0-1 Valencia – Celebrity bloopers here
Afterwards, Unai Emery undid his tie, pushed his soggy hair away from his face and sat down at the press conference like a man who’d fought a glorious battle and won …
“We got it wrong in the first half, but we managed to keep going in the second and I am very proud of the players for their efforts. Initially we could not control Racing in the midfield and we could not create anything, but we showed great effort and courage to get the victory,” Emery said, a Mahou in his hand.
The victory moves Valencia to 43 points and back into the hunt for the fourth Champions League qualifying position, and they achieved the win yesterday despite missing first-team stars such as David Villa, David Silva and Joaquin.
Our next fixture is against Getafe on April 5 at the Mestalla, after the international break.
Some tidbits:
- Silva doesn’t want to leave Spain. Tough luck, Juventus … good tidings for Madrid and Barcelona. Uggh …
- Doesn’t matter. Liverpool still want Silva and David Villa. How much you got, Rafa?
- Manuel Fernandes is happy we got the victory.
“It was a good win, but it doen’t mean that we are playing well again because it is just a small step and we have to improve in many aspects,” Marca quoted him as saying.
“We needed a victory in order to move forward in our next few games. It was vital because we wanted a clean sheet and we celebrated like it was a cup final because we had been waiting a long time for it.”
Very true.
- Did anyone catch David Albelda chastising our newest Pichichi Raul Albiol for giving away a penalty in the 94th minute?
Apparently, they almost came to blows after Albelda projected every Valencia fan’s frustrations and almost pummeled the ‘defender’ for giving away the match.
Everything’s cool now. But it could have been a beat down.
- So 23 games later and we register a clean sheet … yikes.
But a well deserved win … I think. I couldn’t watch the match along with everyone else in the chat.
But a win’s a win, despite Albiol trying to give away another 3 points.
We’re only 5 points behind Villarreal for that last Champions League spot. We just need to keep on playing, keep on keeping on and hopefully good things will come of it …
I’ll try and stay optimistic. I swear.

Great win, Pablo has been a maestro the last 2 weeks! I must say, listening to that game on radio was pretty freaking exciting, thanks for the link Ahmed! I think the commentator jizzed on himself after we won.
Also, I’ll be in London on April 13, 14 and 15 (during the morning and afternoon). Who has a couch and wants to go out drinking!?

word up fellow valencianistas,i’m back(from injury) for the first time.I hope this win will ginger up back into winning ways and 4th hopefully( i’m not asking for much)at season’s end. That’s where we belong. Marchena and albiol are just no more in the team, i mean they suck. They cost us some valuable points. I think it’s phsychological. Joaquin should be sold!! Anyone agree?

i agree, but nt with selling albiol

i agree with selling all players who dont have their mind in playing well for the club..that involves jaoquin, miguel, albiol, marchena

Yep. I’ve a feeling Rafa will put some wonga towards Joaquin this season and take him off your hands. If he hadnt signed Riera last summer it might have been Silva but I think a right footed ball carrier is something Rafa would like in his squad because Babel has been rubbish and doesnt look like a winger. Because he’s not, he’s a mediocre striker played on the wing.
-
That said Silva can play on the right and if Liverpool were to win the champions league this season, along with the Robbie Keane money they got in, Rafa would probably have enough for Silva if Silva wanted to come to england. Which he doesnt.Posted from

@ Cesar
I actually lived exactly in front of Las Animas, its in Calle Pizarro and my balcony it directly i front of it. Got a lot of whiskeys there hehe, but the club / bar isn’t that special! So Aquarela got a second club? Ill check it out when my mates and i pass VLC in july
Is it as good as the one on the beach during the summer? Cause that place rocks, very good techno upstairs!Posted from

Haven’t been to the new Aquarela. Just saw it this past summer … went to Vivir sin Dormir which is always a fun place and then to Aquarela. That place rocks. I went there back in 2001 for the first time and it still hasn’t changed.

Dynamo is in the quarterfinals against PSG. Dynamo should advance. While it sucks we went out, Dynamo is clearly a quality side.

Didn’t find a link to watch the game, but I’m very glad we got the win. I hope this is the start for good things to come. Amunt!

Like Kyle said, we squeezed by fellow Ukrainians Metalist Kharkiv into the last 8. If I got to choose our opponent before the draw, I would have picked PSG, so I’m pretty pleased with how things worked out. That said, at this point in the tournament there are no weak clubs left, the trophy is in sight, and every manager is going to put his best eleven out there, so Dynamo needs to show its best form. If they do, I feel they can get by PSG or anyone else for that matter.
Now lets see Valencia string some wins together and maybe we can meet up in the Champions League next fall!

Why is Del Bosque still taking Albiol in the Spanish squad? Is there something we dont see in him?

Spain have a weakness in defence obviously. There are better Spanish defenders at non-fashionable clubs like Deportivo, but Albiol and Marchena, etc. have experience with the national team and the others dont. I’ve always rated Pique as a prospect and think eventually he’ll be a good player, but he was barely able to get a game for us last season. We sell him to Barcelona and he gets regular games and is in and around the international squad. That should show how weak Spain are in defence, compared to their options in midfield and up front. Every international team has a weakness, lucky for Spain that right now they have the best strikers, central midfielders and keepers to make up for it
