David Villa’s Heart
By: Cesar | April 10th, 2009
We all know David Villa, the world’s greatest striker, resides with Valencia CF.
We also know he’s fond of Sporting Gijon, the club where he began his professional career.
We also happen to be playing Gijon this weekend (more on that in a bit). So let’s hope Villa doesn’t let sentimentality get in the way of scoring a few goals and leading us to victory.
In light of my previous post regarding my personal vendetta against Spanish filth MARCA, I present today’s transfer rumors of the day.
Three pieces of news today.
- First, Villa is signed, sealed and delivered to Chelsea this summer.
- Next, who’ll replace Villa? None other than Barca wunderkind Bojan Krkic.
- Finally, porn starlet and loaned out Argentinian dwarf Ever Banega wants to stay with a ‘big club,’ Atletico Madrid.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way …
It’s Villa against old club Gijon today and he’s got mixed emotions.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for many years and finally, I can return to play at El Molinon,” he said in an interview with AS.
“Whenever I go back home to Asturias, the people there always give me a good reception and I believe that the fans will treat me well when I return to play the game,” he added.
“El Guaje” didn’t celebrate when he scored for Valencia when the two sides met earlier this season at the Mestalla and he has once again promised to respect his old supporters if he scores again. Hopefully three or four times.
“I won’t celebrate if I score out of respect for the home fans, who are very proud of my achievements as a young lad who emerged from the cantera. Besides, I also consider them a part of my success,” he explained, wiping tears from his face.
“However, I want to score to help Valencia win this game. It will be a painful and complicated situation for me. I have to fight against my old club who have never been my rival and it is a rare feeling.”
Villa was then put in a tight spot when asked if he would be hurt if he were to take three points away from Sporting.
“Both teams are in need of points, although I hope that the end result will favor Valencia. (You hope?!) But it will be painful for me because my friends and associates tell me that the Sporting fans always applaud me whenever they see on the scoreboard that I’ve scored a goal for Valencia,” he concluded.
And they can applaud when you score four this weekend.
Side note, but do you think Villa will be this humble when he plays for Chelsea/Real Madrid/Barcelona and faces us? Things that make you go ‘Hmmm …’
Anyways, Villa went on to say he wants to stay with us. Sweeeeet.
“I signed a contract for six years and I intend to see that through. The club trusts me and they haven’t told me anything about a possible sale,” he explained.
“The club has always told me everything that has been said and with regards to a possible offer, they have said nothing.”
The Valencia man also spoke about the prospect of reaching the Champions League this year, and admits that is what they are aiming for.
“The Champions League is the biggest club competition and it makes me jealous not to be playing in it. We are trying to do things well this season so that next year we do not have to watch it on television,” he said.
“There may be changes to the landscape on a professional level but there won’t be in our decisions because I want to stay,” he said. “We all know what a year without Champions League would be like, so we wish to reach fourth spot. Nothing is going through my mind other than finishing in the top four.”
Finally, Villa was asked about the financial situation, which has improved recently but is still thought to be fragile.
“We have helped the club in a delicate situation in every way we can, and now that things are getting better they are thanking us,” he concluded.
Right then.
So it’s Sporting Gijon this Easter Sunday at El Molinon, Villa’s old stomping grounds in Asturias. We needed last week’s match against Getafe and got that one, 4-1. We need this one as well. We’re a mere 2 points behind local rivals Villarreal for that coveted Champions League spot and we can’t let up now.
Villarreal played a tough Champions League match midweek against Arsenal and now square off against up-and-coming Malaga this Saturday. A slip up by them and a victory by us and guess who’s in 4th?
Sporting currently reside in 13th place in La Liga, a mere three points from 18th and relegation. So this game’s important to them.
They’ve let in a scary 61 goals this season, so it’s obvious they could care less about defense. Our offense could have a field day against Gijon, who have lost two in a row.
They did shock us 3-2 at the Mestalla back in November, so they’re not a pushover. Still, 61 goals? Yikes.
Manuel Fernandes won’t be available for this match or for any matches this season as he’s gone with a broken leg. Then again, he played an hour with a broken leg (because he’s that tough) so maybe he’ll get a run out in the 2nd half?

Figure he won’t. We’ll probably see David Albelda in that defensive midfielder position, now that Carlos Marchena is back in his coveted center back role, ready to let opposing forwards streak to the goal.
I’ve no word on Miguel or Joaquin, so that would all be speculation at this point.
Still, with Villa back on his stomping grounds, I’m expecting an emotional, high-spirited win for our lads.
Goal.com?
PREDICTION
A draw is out of the question, and Sporting simply do not have the defence to cope with Valencia’s potent forward line. Expect plenty of goals, with the away team getting most of them.
Sporting Gijon 2-4 Valencia
Sweet!!
One more tidbit.
A great blog post on elvalencianista.com (sorry, in Spanish) on ‘Ten Reasons to Believe in VCF Being in Next Season’s Champions League’ … or something to that effect.
The ten?
1 – The UEFA Champions League (UCL) gives a club lots of prestige.
2 – We get money if we get in.
3 – Indirect income. Sponsors, etc.
4 – To keep Silva and Villa. Ya!
5 – Our direct rivals our floundering. For example, Villarreal.
6 – We’re on a hot streak. Let’s continue that this weekend.
7 – VCF’s future is at stake.
8 – The UCL’s cities are better than the UEFA Cup’s. As the post says, we’ve been to Kiev, Copenhagen and Rosenborg this season in the UEFA Cup. No offense, but they’re no Milan, Liverpool, Manchester or Munich. Big clubs play in those cities.
9 – We have a really good team! On paper, at least. This team SHOULD be in the UCL.
And my favorite?
10 – BECAUSE THE FANS DESERVE IT!!!
AMUNT!!!! Let’s continue our good run this weekend …

That was a wicked goal from Mata. He could have passed it to David Villa but, he let the defenders circled him and shot with a powerful strike that went just right inside the net. It seems that he got confidence during the season and this will prove to be very decisive. This kind of attitude is leading him into a complete player, a player with initiative . Silva has it, Villa has it, Joaquin too, and now, his having it little by little. Mata was unimpressive at the beginning. He is the same as Walcott; the playing time is giving him a lot and he’s developing his potential.
I hope Michel can turn out like him. If not, the team really need another finisher. This is why Valencia needs to reclaim Aaron Niguez and hope for the best.
Hum, I saw Valencia’s next opponent, and it’s Sevilla. I believe they lost their game. But, Sevilla is a difficult adversary. And, Valencia needs to overcome all these kinds of situation to be qualified in the Champions league. This will get very hard now. Villareal is hot on the team’s wheel and, the only known way to stop them, it’s to with every remaining matches. But, with this the epic schedule ahead, I don’t know if the team can maintain their ephemera form.

adimente: Yeah youre right..we’ve won the last 3 matches but I think we can afford to lose 2-3 of the remaining ones (let’s not forget we do have Barca and Real left).
It would be a tough one for us but if Emery gets his tactics right and our star players (namely Villa, Mata and Silva) deliver some wonderful play like yesterday, then we might just make it.
We shouldnt look at the rest of the calendar but only focus on Sevilla for now and hope our home fans manage to show up for once!!!

@ LILLO, hi, sometimes you come out with some interesting facts. However if you suffer from a “blurry screen” then that explains your last comments. It is not just me that can see things in a clear light. BANE said Villa was “out of the game” FAYEZ said “something was clearly wrong with him” Mata picked out a brilliant shot from about 20 yards away. SILVA MADE HIS GOAL, by dribbling through about 3 defenders even jumping over legs stretched out to trip him, kept the ball and picked his spot, beautiful. THAT is what Villa should be doing if he is what you say he is.Villas contribution was a penalty. The last match, Mata then Albiol with a great long shot(how come not Villa?) Villas contribution penalties.OK maybe occasionally he does some good work, but you have to wait about 5 games to see it.To use your word that is not the style of a “crack”. Mata got us out of the fire not Villa when it was so vital.Villa missed an easy one, we cant afford this lack of spark in our main striker. ………….Almendras

@ Almendras
Villa gave the assist to Silva for the first one. Villa also gave a wonderful pass when we should have gotten our second penalty. Latest games he has been very very dangerous except for yesterday’s game, and why didnt it go yesterday??? Cause he didnt want to score against his former team at his own home, which is kinda unprofessional but i understand. What Lillo said about your comment is that u don’t believe he is a finisher, a true goalmaker!? He has made 80 goals in 120 appearences for Valencia, 24 in 43 for Spain, how many players in the world have such stats at such a level? Or are they all penalties according to you!??Villa might have days off like yesterday but even if he doesnt score or just scores by penalty, doesn’t mean he ain’t a true goalmaker. Ad hattricks he makes, remember Bilbao, last game of the season? 5 minutes 3 goals.
Villa’s stats are incredible and we won’t find any of such players any day soon so better praise our team to be so lucky to still have him!!! Amunt

Almendras, here’s a tip. Don’t be selectively blind. Open your eyes to the good performances of a player too. Villa has 20+ goals in la liga and all you saw were the 3 penalties in the last couple of matches? Here’s another tip. Read the first line of the original post.

Fayez, we really can’t afford to lose 2-3 games. Atletico are 3 points behind us. Apart from us, their strongest opponent is Racing at 10. The other matches are against teams at 13,15,16,17,19 & 20. Thats pretty much the bottom quarter. We can hope they lose 2-3 matches among those, but we shouldn’t depend on it. And there is Villareal and Malaga breathing down our necks as well.

Nithin,
playing agains 13,15,16,17,19 & 20 means shit in la liga. You (meaning Atletico) can still lose or draw plenty, especially at the end of the season when relegation teams go nuts trying to stay afloat.I think it’s good that we play stronger teams; our players will be far more motivated. I just hope Mestalla will be packed again and create intimidating atmosphere for the opponents, no matter who we play. This is decision time, local fans should bring all the support the team needs.

Almendras – one game doesnt make someone a “goal creater”. It also doesnt dismiss them as one. Villa has made his name scoring goals for fun and for a section of this season was winning you points from scoring from half chances alone because he wasnt getting real chances. If you’re unhappy with him you’re going to be in for a rude awakening if Valencia do sell Villa because you’ll get someone half as good at best. If you cant remember more than 5 matches back when Villa was on form then you must have some bizarre form of goldfish memory
I appreciate he wasnt at his best this weekend, even I could see that. But no player has been at his best in every single game this season. In fact Villa probably has the most performances this season of any player playing at their best.Posted from

@quin well i kinda agree with Nithin in that i consider Atletico the most dangerous competitor for taking our 4th spot.
Villarreal looks horribly off boil in the liga so i doubt they will make it. Besides they got to play the top flight as well and play in CL still wich means they are a bit less focussed on la liga (if they somehow manage to win that they will get 4th spot however).

Barcelona and Real Madrid up ahead…. It’s quite a challenge. A the least, the team can manage itself agaisnt Real Madrid. Real Madrid are not the best performer. They win, yes, but they’re not fantastic. They’re defense is awful (such as Valencia). Their offense can be something. But, they have no chemical in their team.
Valencia, in the other hand, can be very troublesome. If they take out Silva or Mata, here comes Vicente, another threat to be aware of. In the other hand, one thing is for sure, it would be God’s doing if Valencia draws agaisnt Barcelona. But, loosing to much will cost us deeply at the end. Qualifying for the champions league would definitely give the team some funds to roll again.

@Nithin : Statistically we can still lose to Barca and Real and still manage 4th if we win most of the remaining matches. The two games that I think are must-wins are the Villarreal and Atletico games. Of course, the rest are important but not vital.
Im not saying we shouldnt aim for a win in every game (of course we should and we can still get 3rd place!), but we needed 8 wins out of 11 to qualify for the CL from a mathmatical sense and now we need 5 games out of 8.
We shouldnt let our guard down and I hope we win against Sevilla, id rather we dont have to wait until the last game of the season to know if we’re in the CL next year or not!
@ Martijn: Dont write off Villarreal just yet, they are only distracted by the CL at the moment (they just played a game against Arsenal in the midweek and have the 2nd leg to worry about too). Atletico have a pathetic defense that reminds me of ours so even smaller teams can give them a hard time.
In fact at the end of the league id rather face the top teams than the teams that are fighting for relegation. Those teams at the bottom really pose a serious threat.

@ almendras: i really like your comments..it really gives insight..but why the tirade against villa?? it’s been going on for a while..at the start of the season when he was scoring from penalties and now..take the match against gijon..he hardly had two to three touches(this is due to emery’s tactics of playing a lone striker)..but two of them resulted in great touches out of which silva was able to score one..
the second thing i observed is that maybe you dont appreciate villa or dont want to because most of us here think he is god and dont give credit to the other great valencian players like kempes who you said was better..i apologize on this as i am in no position to compare but if you look at it mate is there a better striker in spain than villa right now?.. is eto’o better??
i agree villa may not be scoring those great goals like from half line against depor or free kick against inter but at the end of the day he is scoring and if you look at it half of them are really good goals..@rest: sevilla is at home..maybe we can win.. but villareal tough as it is at el madrigal.. atletico and real madrid we should try to win..espanyol might be very tricky as it’s away and they are at the bottom

Adimante – You may be surprised to hear that Real Madrid have the best defensive record in the league since Ramos took over. Also, I dont rate Huntelaar all that highly but if he’s given good oppertunities to score he’ll take them. With Valencia’s defence… Chances are someone will mess up and give him the oppertunity. And if it doesnt fall to him it’ll fall to Raul or Higuain and on this season’s form they’ll probably take it too. Its going to be a very tough game given that Real Madrid are good defensively at the moment and their attack features players who normally stick away their chances.

@fayez well its just that Villarreals remaining matches are as hard as ours, they get the full top 3 and us as well were atletico gets small guys.
Top flight might have less motivation as the top 3 positions are kind of fixed already by then and Barca has CL as well but still…

I does not matter who Athletico or Villarreal face because right now we are ahead of both of them therefore our destiny is in our hands which basically means we decide if we are going to next season CL…We should only concentrate on the enxt game which is Sevilla which i believe we can win

You can definately beat Sevilla if you hold up at the back. You’ve done it before this season havent you? And in the other matches it was close, with poor defending costing you. So as per normal, a good display at the back and you have the firepower to win all 3 points.

Lillo: Really?!? wow, the defenders at Real Madrid don’t look like powerhouse.
Pepe is good but he is too offensive minded. Cannavaro is quite old now. If Villa gets in shape, a one-on-one between Villa and Cannavaro or Silva and Canavaro, Cannavaro has no chance. Heinze….. no need to talk about him. Ramos, well, he didn’t take part in the last game agaisnt Malaga. He was probably hurt. But, he’s their star defender. Torres is not a threat. Technically, if Valencia put a quick winger such as Mata on Heinze’s side, then a lot of crosses will be delivered. Then, in the central area, there is Lassana Diarra who’s performing quite well. He can easily break down the offensive fluency in the center and distribute the ball quite well with his long range passes. In my opinion, Valencia should exploit the wings. They have talented players that can afford a lot of space for the strikers to find a hole in the defense and try to score with a header.
As you said, Klass is not someone to be feared unless that he is given the opportunity. (He kind of reminds me of Berbatov at Manchester United.)
In contrast to Barcelona, each of their defenders can eaily corrupt another team’s defense.Lol. look at DanielAlves or Puyol! Well, let’s not talk about them already.
But, Sevilla is surely against which Valencia can win. If I reminisce well, I think the first game that Valencia played agaisnt Sevilla, they draw. The defenders need to watch out for Fabiano, Capel (if he plays) and Navas.

Adimente – I’m not sure how often you’ve seen Huntelaar and Berbatov, but I can tell you right now they are the polar opposites as strikers. They couldnt be more different really.
-
Huntelaar is basically Ruud Van Nistelrooy without his ability to hold up the ball and get involved in general play. Huntelaar is just the finishing aspect. The rest of his game is average. But he finishes his chances as well as anyone. With right foot, left foot or head.
-
Berbatov on the other hand drops deep. Really deep. Into midfield. He’s got more assists than goals this season and has been largely dissappointing. He has a great first touch and the vision to set up team mates but hardly ever scores goals and when he has this season they have been tap ins. He wasnt a £30 million player thats for sure. At a stretch he’s a lazy, £20 million player. Swap him for David Villa?
Pleeease…
-
As for Real Madrid, Ramos gets caught out at the back often. He’s impressive at times with his strength of tackles, his aerial ability from set pieces and in the main coming forwards, but he is often caught out of position at the back. He’s not as bad as Heinze but he isnt that good either. Cannavaro is Real Madrid’s star defender. But obviously he doesnt have much pace to his game. So he leads the defence and has to try and cover for all the many mistakes Ramos, Heinze and Pepe make. It works somehow, dont ask me. Of course it also helps when you have the world’s best goalkeeper behind them.
-
As for Barcelona, its a bit of a shame. As your attack could put them to the sword like Atletico Madrid’s did. In fact Atletico are basically the same as Valencia this season. Brilliant up front, not very good in the middle and rubbish at the back. And they are behind you so obviously not as good/consistant. And despite these very same problems they beat Barcelona. So I think you CAN beat them but its a long shot when their midfield is going to smother yours and yours doesnt have the energy or competativeness to break up their play. It could be another very one sided encounter unfortunately, because when your central midfield is swamped, its hard for your wingers and strikers to create goals. Its going to mean literally running and passing the ball between your ‘front 4′ 60 yards from your right back area and into Barcelona’s goalmouth on the counter. Because your central midfield wont see the opposition’s half :sPosted from

Hum… Well, when I was referring to Berbatov, it was about the fact that both of them don’t get involve very much in their team. Well, I cannot talk a lot about Klass, because he isn’t someone that I’ve seen played often, but, I know that when he’s marked, he doesn’t try hard to free himself. The same can be said about Berbatov. The difference, as you said it, it’s that Klass is the front man, so if he cannot manage to make himself available, the team will suffer. But, Berbatov, since he plays as a second striker (if we can say so), it do not matter a lot for Manchester United because the truth, it’s that Berbatov is there to create panic and give free space for Rooney.
This is something Valencia needs too. a second striker. However, it needs to be more efficient than Berbatov though.

Adimente – I see what you mean now. That they can both be a bit of a passenger in the match unless you play to their strengths I guess. The thing is, a player ‘in the hole’ or second striker… Imo is the most important player in attack. So I have to disagree with you there. Its actually horrible what we’re doing with Berbatov right now as our attacking play has got a lot worse since we tried to accomodate him. We had the chemistry perfect last season but this season our attack has been rubbish in comparison. Our defence have carried us for most of the season but now we’re falling apart at the back
So unless we can nail things shut once again in defence (and go back to breaking records) we will have to take our 2 trophies this season and be happy with that. Because you dont win trophies without a solid defence. Not unless your attacking play is twice as good as everyone else’s (Spain at the euros). And really, ours has been pants. Anyway :
-
I think that the ‘in the hole’ or second striker role suits David Silva perfectly. Its the best position for him to showcase his vision and passing which are his main qualities. And it also gives him chances to get shots away, another of his better skills. He just needs to be a lot more consistant. Because sometimes he’s absolutely great in that role. But then he has 3 or 4 matches where you barely see him get involved. If he can perform somewhere near his best in that position week after week he could imo become the best in the world at playing there. Because he has the talent and skill set to do it, he just needs to apply himself and influence the match as much as a player of his talent should.Posted from

Lillo, i think Silva’s major problem has been his confidence. When the whole team was down on morale and underperforming, he was still running hard, getting knowcked around and trying to win balls. But the vision and passing you talked about were missing. Last couple of matches, we’ve got to see that. And we need more of that.
Real Madrid has been winning but haven’t been in great form. They somehow scrape through, much like ManU of late. Given that, we do have a chance against them if we press them from the start.
Barcelona is a whole different ball game. Their midfield is so potent, that the opposition midfield sees very little of the ball. Then there’s the Alves/Messi & Sylvinho/Henry combinations. Their game relies on midfield control and they have got so many players who can assist/score that a couple being off doesn’t really affect them. We would miss the holding midfielder role against them, one that Fernandes was nicely slotting into. Their defense is probably their weak link, especially with their busy schedule. That is what we should try and exploit.
