Copa Del Rey Blues
By: Cesar | January 7th, 2009
Last season, the Copa Del Rey was our saving grace.
It provided a soothing elixir to an otherwise putrid campaign. We celebrated, we laughed, we embraced and we dealt with the horrible hangovers the next morning …
This season, the Copa is more annoyance than reprieve.
I’d much rather concentrate on getting into the Champions League next season or going as far as we can in the UEFA Cup than defend our King’s Cup championship.
Apparently, the honchos at the Mestalla don’t agree with me. Valencia’s set to host the Cup Final this year so we’re giving it our all to make sure we’re in the match come May 13th.
Coach Unai Emery intimated as much a few days ago, saying, ‘we are the defending champions and with the final at the Mestalla, we have to be focused.’
Focused indeed. So focused we played four starters (Renan, Miguel, Marchena, Fernandes) at the beginning of today’s round of 16 Cup encounter with Racing Santander. So focused that David Villa, David Silva and Raul Albiol made it out for a kick about. So focused that we earned two red cards and played very undisciplined football …
1-1 was the final in a sloppy, plodding, boring affair from Santander, Spain.
To be fair, besides the starters, we fielded a pretty thin lineup. Fernando Morientes and Vicente started out front, with the now healthy Angulo around to miss easy shots and the likes of Edu, Maduro and Del Horno about to provide comic relief.
The first half was awful … putrid … boring … yawn-inducing … get my drift? Nothing of value happened. Valencia played. But I’ve seen video games be more entertaining than the match at the Sardinero. Luckily, we squeaked in a goal.
Fernandes drifted a corner into the near post. Santander defender Colsa, in an attempt to head the ball away from his goal, flicked the ball past his own goalkeeper and into the net. Pathetic own goal, but a goal nonetheless …
The 2nd half was better, but not because of us. Racing attacked and we defended.
Racing got a deserved penalty five minutes in when big-boned Miguel clobbered into Santander man Jonathan. On-loan Real Madrid man Garay stepped up but placed his kick too high and the ball crashed back off the cross bar with Renan looking around at the pretty girls in the stand.
Our reprieve lasted 4 minutes thanks to midfielder Lacen, who drew Santander level with a deserved equalizer.
Santander smelled blood and came after us. Pinillos swung in a juicy cross into the near post which was met by Toni Moral but Renan got down shrewdly at his near post to push the ball away, and then both Marchena and substitute Raul Albiol brilliantly blocked the follow-up efforts.
Emery smelled the Mestalla final slipping from his grubby hands and brought on Silva and Villa to score some goals …
Unfortunately, it was not to be. Not only that, we managed two red cards in the closing stages. Fun fun!
Vicente was dismissed for stamping on Santander full-back Oriol, receiving a straight red card from the referee.
Then, Miguel lunged at Serrano and received a second yellow. Upon seeing that, he stormed off the field straight at the assistant referee and had to be dragged from the field by Emery, who rushed from the dugout to manhandle his defender.
Wild finish. Boring match … blah blah blah …
It is what it is …

Dealbert has given his “SI” to Valencia and will play for us as of the first of July 2009. According to the media, both parties have a agreement and only minor detaisl are there to be solved but no problems are forseen in that area. So we will have a new defender folks!

i think we need miguel more than we need vicente, so if miguel plays, i have no problem with tht!
and the ref was a son of a bitch!Posted from

@Ali: lol
@Johnnie: I am very interested in how this cat is gonna take this promotion to La Liga. I’m hoping Dealbert is Aladdin, our diamond in the rough. Actually, he could be Jasmine too, but I think that would benefit a different pasttime of mine, not Valencia.enough Disney references…AMUNT!

We don’t really have another decent right back in the squad, the miguel red card could be costly come saturday if he is suspended against rivals Villarreal, one plus point in all this is the way Emery reacted to the whole situation, the way he rushed to calom miguel can oly strengthen his image and perseption amugst the players n fans alike

@ DJ
Well for sure Vicente was Jaffar last match, maybe Soler would have been that fat Sultan from the same story.Anyway, lets hope Dealbert is some Cinderella but he knows his role, he will be the fourth defender and will have no problems dealing with position. But who knows he will be Gladstone Gander and play some matches
As for our unlucky ill tempered Donald Duck Miguel i am sure we could make sure he won’t miss Villarreals match, but if he would miss it we could always get out beloved Cullo “Bambi” Torres from Manolo’s, if he can find somebody to cover his shift…
@ Amir Alam
Yeah for sure that was a good move man, i wouldnt see Schuster do that in his time at Madrid, he just sits and count money. But Emery is alive, he is one with the team and this surely demonstrated how much he is into the game and team.Posted from

Manolo’s is a bar across the street from the Mestalla owned by Manolo El Del Bombo which houses the Museo del Futbol … (Museum of Football) … Curro Torres works there and Gonzalo De los Santos used to bus tables there … or not …

kat i cant imagine a NEW manalos, im sure the ¨new jaberbowl¨ will have bars and better facilities but it wont be the same.
miguel would like to tell everyone that he never ¨ wished the ref would die¨ what he said was ¨ ojala las pulgas de 10,000 camellos viejos infecten el cullo de tu madre¨
anybody else feel realy sorry for cristiano ronaldo after totaling his new farari………………

@ Bob : Im glad he isnt hurt, but I cant have any sort of feelings of sympathy over his car when he is this arrogant. I doubt something like that would change him or his ego anyway as he seems like a hopeless case.

As for Miguel they will be discussing his case today in a committee. Superdeporte.es has an article about this today.

Guys, I hate to do this, as we said never again to bring up goal dot com, but I have to – this is my last time – point out this utter anti-valencia bias. “Villa is still a dream and competition will be fierce when Valencia finally agree to let him go, which could well happen in June as his desire to step up a level will grow.” Piss off to the author of this nonsense.

@ Shishir
Carleto doesn’t have a working permit yet so he is playing with the second team. Hope he gets one soon, but with the Spanish burocracy everything takes ages…@ siva
Funny thing they write in SD, that Robben was just given the one-match ban a month ago for saying Fuck You to the ref and taking him by his arm and telling him it was a penalty. Now our Evil Empire has the reputation of dodging any bullit, but it is kinda weird to see Miguel be banned for 3 matches and Robben for none, once again their rep is proven…Posted from

It is being reported on Europa Press that our beloved team is after Jesus Gamez a right back from Malaga CF. According to goal.com he is also being pursued by Aston Villa, Sevilla and Villareal. I haven’t heard a lot about this guy, does anyone know anything about him?
