Champions League? What Champions League?

By: Cesar | April 24th, 2007

champions_league2.jpgWhile the rest of the footballing world focuses on some European competition called the Champions League (what kind of name is that??), I sit here, gently twiddling my thumbs, scratching my ear, craning my neck, trying not to fall asleep from the tedium of this all-English semi-final.

Granted, it’s wonderful & exciting and yada yada yada, I’m just not that pumped to see Liverpool-Chelsea for the 14,372nd time.

So I’m trying to think of something to say that’s original; that’s fresh, hip & exciting.

Here’s the thing: You don’t read this blog for me to regurgitate Valencia CF news back to you. Most likely, you come to read my opinion, see what a silly American has to say about your beloved club.

You get your Valencia news elsewhere. Marca, AS and Super Deporte do a much better job than I could (well, that’s debatable). They have access, they watch the games live, they get PAID.

I simply love the team and want a forum for my opinions. What I offer is my deluded, maniacal take on things.

So I’m shifting focus a little.

Instead of cutting and copying the news of the day, I’m going to assume you love the team as much as I do and read up on them religiously.

First thing I do in the morning: go on foroche.com and read the day’s news. I make my way to the tabloids like Marca and see what garbage they’re spewing. I think about it some (hmm…) and make ready to say something to someone only to realize, I’M THE ONLY VALENCIA FAN IN 2,000 SQUARE MILES!

So that’s why I’m here. To spew, to discuss, to give my opinion. To have someone to chat with about my club.

What do you think? Do I make sense? Or am I just overtired from work and play?

Tidbits:
- Raul Garcia? Who cares? I like him but if he doesn’t want to be here, so what? Go play in the Intertoto Cup every year with Atletico Madrid …

- Wesley Sneijder. Who is he?

- I like Zapater. And I want him. On the team, that is. Not like … personally.

- That European Cup thing that’s going on today and tomorrow.

I like Man U over AC Milan. I really can’t stand either team but like voting for President here in the USA, we’re going with the lesser of two evils. I hate Pippo Inzaghi more than I hate Wayne Rooney, so Man U’s my team there.

On the other side, do you even need to ask? The only Spanish team left, Liverpool takes on the team that knocked us out, Chelsea.

Go on you Reds!

Wesley Sneijder would be a great signing, though I don’t know if Valencia are willing to throw the necessary bags of euros to Ajax to secure the services of Mr. Sneijder. They certainly balked at throwing more money to secure Salomon “Maybe I’m from the Ivory Coast after all” Kalou for Valencia, but then again Sneijder is a different proposition altogether. With Kalou you were gambling on potential, with Sneijder you pretty much have the finished product.

My only quibble about Sneijder is that he’s not terribly tall, but that is a small point (no pun intended). He’s an attacking midfielder, arguably the next big thing to come out of the Ajax academy after Rafael Van der Vaart. But to be honest, I’d rather sign either Afellay or Aissati out of PSV or de Guzman out of Feyenoord. They’re more of the category of potential then the finished product, but they all have very good upsides. I would prefer Afellay of the three I suggested, but he needs to add muscle to his thin frame. His paper-thinnes may explain the injuries he’s already had in his young career.

Luis Garcia, not sure what to say. You have to think that the Colchoneros will be better next year, so I don’t think they’ll be competing strictly for the Intertoto. They sorely missed Maxi Rodriguez this year, and the year of experience for Aguerro can only help the young man. Though in all honesty I don’t think he’s the 178th or so version of the next Maradona as some, very few, claim him to be. Luis Garcia may just be the player to reanimate the somewhat slumping Fernando Torres. I don’t know for certain, but I think Atletico will be better next year. Of course, if they still rely heavily (pun intended) on Maniche, then well Intertoto here we come!

To be honest, I’m somewhat concerned on what exactly those lunatics in Madrid will do with their printing press this summer. Is CRonaldo going to be signed? Kaka? Surely they will actually try and not be second banana to Barça for a change.

With regards to the CL, I’d like Milan to beat Man U and Abramovich’s Moneyed All-Stars to beat Liverpool.

As an aside, have you ever considered visiting the Mestalla for a match this upcoming season? If so, maybe we can co-ordinate schedules etc.

Hoser, I definitely would like to go next season to the Mestalla. It’s been a few years since I’ve been there.
Atletico (or Patetico as some would call them) did get a bad break this year with all their injuries. Raul Garcia would strengthen their team for sure.
Real Madrid? I only expect Kaka, CRonaldo, Alex Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant and Chivu to be signed. Seriously, they’re silly sometimes …

To be honest, I could care less who we sign this season. Our team is already the bomb and it’ll be like a new team when everyone comes back from injury. Also, I’m hearing crazy things about Villa and Chelsea again and I don’t like it. Chelsea is too greedy for my liking…

Albelda thinks that we still have a shot at the league (albeit a long shot). I know that he’s our captain but do we have to believe him? I’m a pessimist and I don’t think we can do it.

I want Milan to beat Man U. I have a very soft spot in my heart for Milan so I think they deserve this. I hope that the final is rematch between Milan and Liverpool bc that would be ridicuLOUS. Plus, this might be Maldini’s last year and I think he deserves to go out in style

I have no doubt that Villa will be here next season. Who would pay that much money for him? Well, Chelsea … but c’mon …

Albelda thinks those things because of the peroxide in his hair. It’s great that he has confidence, but I agree with you Sarrah, that we’re not going to win the league.

What’s with those H & M ads Maldini’s doing here in the USA?
