Catch-up Time
By: dan_c | July 8th, 2011Ladies and Gents I have returned to the world, and I’m sure it is clear that I have had a lot of catching up to do. I will do my best summarise the current and recent news of Valencia. Apologies for any repetition or old news. So…
Are we clever with our transfers, or do we splash cash and suffer financially later?
This question relates to our recent transfer dealings. On the one hand…
Fernandes Joins Besiktas
This simple phrase initially doesn’t sound too bad until one considers that we let him leave for just 2m euros after signing him for 18m. Couple this with Joaquin’s move to Malaga City and we have this equation.
Joaquin bought for 25m euros
Sold for 4m
Fernandes bought for 18m
Sold for 2m
Therefore
25m – 4m (Joaquin) + 18m – 2m (Fernandes) = 43m – 6m = 37m euro loss
We all know Valencia’s financial situation. We made very good money on the sales of The Two Davids this time last year, but this stat completely undoes the good work it seems!
While Joaquin didn’t feature significantly in the side last season and Fernandes spent time away from Spain on loan, and so neither players exit will impact the squad negatively, from a financial viewpoint these sales are perplexing. Joaquin did eat into our wage budget in a big way so maybe that is more understandable, but 4m seems too cheap for me.
Fernandes however is a good player. He fell out of favour with Emery but he has ability far beyond his selling price. He has proven himself good enough to play at top level in Portugal, England and I would argue Spain too. At 25 he is far from reaching his full ability as a footballer. Yet he was allowed to go for the amount of money it took for Ipswich Town (a mid-table English second division team) to buy Michael Chopra, an average striker who didn’t cut in the Premier League.
I don’t understand. What is Llorente’s motive for brokering deals that make no business sense.
On the other hand…
Piatti and Parejo Arrive in Valencia
These two signings look to be extremely clever buys. Piatti, despite being stuck in an extremely weak Almeria team last year, shone in La Liga. He will fit straight into the Valencia mould as a small, quick, nimble-footed, intelligent asset. At a knockdown price, I am delighted to see him join the club. Llorente described him as a great player, one who is extremely versatile, being able to play across the midfield and create opportunities with his creativity and vision. He cost just 8m euros reportedly, and looks a great signing. He has already won the Argentinean Clausara Championship too with Estudiantes and the U20 World Championships with Argentina.

Dani Parejo also arrived in Valencia. There is great excitement among fans in Spain over the move, and around 500 travelled to the VCF campus to welcome him.
Chief Administrative Braulio Vázquez gave an explanation for Valencia’s pursuit of Parejo.
“ I can assure you that Dani ticks all the boxes for us. He is young -22 years old- and a European Champion. He has a lot of international experience and has played for Real Madrid and in England. He has great vision on the pitch and a fantastic shot. Bringing good, young players is always the most difficult task in the transfer market. Thanks to Valencia CF, I’m sure that Parejo will soon be a full international for Spain.”
Parejo explained that Juan Mata influenced his decision. They discussed the move during the victorious U21 campaign and Mata sold the club to Dani.
Valencia certainly now have a midfield to challenge all in La Liga. While maybe not quite on the level of Xavi/Iniesta et al yet, we are well on the way it seems.
Dani looks to be a clever buy, a young talent who can and will blossom Los Che.

So I am still confused. Are we at all good on the transfer market? Someone with an answer would be welcome.
Should we be worried about Mata?
Let’s not beat about the (stupidly) proverbial bush here. Mata is wanted. He is an incredible player. He could start for virtually any side in the world right now. He has won the World Cup and the Euro U21 Championship in just a year. He is only 23. He is held in high regard in England. Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U, Spurs and others have been linked.
Will he leave? There certainly have been mixed messages.
In an interview recently Llorente explained that, while Mata wanted to stay, Valencia would not “chain anyone to a chair” if they wanted to leave. Mata Senior has been cryptic too. An English paper quoted him as saying that “There have been calls from foreign clubs but now the decision rests with Valencia. [Juan] is on his holidays,”
Unfortunately, while media around the world is becoming better and better and sucking transfer rumours out of their thumbs when there is nothing going on, where there is smoke there is fire and, like with the Luka Modric and Samir Nasri situations in England, where there is this much smoke, there is undoubtably fire.
Reports speculate that the fee accepted by Valencia would be around 25m euros. This is far too little for me for a player of his quality. While we have a wonderful midfield, losing Mata would be huge. Let’s hope that Piatti wasn’t signed as a direct replacement.
Llorente speaks on Transfers to Come
Llorente recently revealed in an interview that for the rest of Valencia’s transfer campaign, the defence would be the focus. He is admittedly desperate to strengthen the backline, although if an excellent deal for another player rocks up he will consider it.
He also expressed his delight with Valencia’s “perfect finish” last year and explained that the tough place that Los Che are in financially thwarted the deal for Kevin Gameiro.
Finally, he explained that Aduriz is not for sale.
Other Transfer rumours
Reports claimed that Christian Chivu turned down a move to Valencia, as Los Che couldn’t satisfy his huge wage request. I am glad that this transfer never happened. Chivu was good for Roma but has been unreliable and woeful at times for Inter over the past while.
It seems unlikely that Miguel will leave, despite reports of a bad relationship with Emery. He is settled in Valencia and wants to see out his contract.
Andres Guardado has been linked again. The Mexican, currently with Deportivo, who we relegated on the final day of last season, has been billed as a replacement for Mata. There is a distinct sense of déjà vu about this rumour. Almost this exact story was published last season, when Mata was being similarly coveted, and Guardado was earmarked as the best replacement possible.
Jordi Alba was linked with Barcelona in the last few days. He is apparently seen by Pep G as a replacement for Maxwell.
Emery’s Fears
Unai Emery has recently voiced concerns at the threat that clubs like Getafe and Malaga will pose to the established order in the coming months and years. He sees the top-half regulars like Sevilla, Villarreal, Valencia and Athletico coming under attack from the new-money clubs.
To quote: “It will be a difficult league, harder if possible seeing how some teams have been strengthened as Malaga, Athletic, including Getafe. They will try to catch the group of Villarreal, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid, which always start as candidates to enter the Champions League, “
“We will try to follow the line of the last two seasons, but taking steps forward in all three competitions in the form of points in the league and the Champions League qualifier and in the Cup,”
Valencia Kit 2011 2012, Joma’s first attempt
There was concern over the various monstrosities that Joma could produce, but I am happy with their attempt. The designs are simple and stylish. Maybe this is a year for a new replica shirt to join the others in my wardrobe.

So there we are. This is all I could muster and manage. Have I missed anything or got anything wrong? Let me know.
There is only one thing left to say I guess.

@ Jose which one are you referring to? Do you mean the post about Joaquin, I talking about Kyle of course if so what did he say about Mata? I haven’t seen him write/type anything bad about Mata.
@Lillo
Banega is ba/d this season and more likely he will be bad the coming season as well and he was nowhere near the best of our team not even for a single game and I love Dm’s and Cm’s and Mata is our most important player for this season he was that in the first half of the season and the second half he was even more important, I really disagree with you that Banega has been that important at all, he was good in 09/10 but he isn’t now and it’s more likely that he won’t become good this season as well. Too many fans rate Banega too highly and I think so are you.And btw Kyle has never said anything bad about Mata, you have a wrong impression of him because he disagrees with your opinion even though you are clearly wrong
jking but I have the impression that you think I’m less than you as well because I don’t rate Banega as much as you do anyway back to Kyle he is always saying how good Mata is and how important he is so your idea of him is wrong on that subject. And he unlike many others actually sees things as a whole and doesn’t partly see things and I agree with his opinion about Banega.PS Fuck you Isco, I hope you’ll realize what you are going is wrong, a 19 year old going for money that’s wrong in so many ways. Veta ya Isco.

-

fuck u isco, i might be drunk but this is madness. Alright valencia should ve handled tzhis better but still, gimme a break we are ten times better than malaga, plus we have shown to take care of talent, let them develop. Wtf happened to the offisde?

-

Jafar, sorry lad but I’m talking about many months ago. I havent been here for a while but I’ve been coming on here for years now, so its quite possible it was before your time? Its not just Kyle. There were several people having a go at Mata despite him being your best player last season.
-
As for Isco, I was surprised he wasnt given more chances in the first team in the past 2 seasons having watched him at youth level with Spain. Could it be he got frustrated waiting for his chances and promises about being played next season came too late?

-

AS and Marca this morning report that Malaga have signed Isco for just 6m euros, triggering his minimun buy-out clause. All I can say is *&%#. Isco is an excellent talent and now we’ve lost him. I’m disappointed in him for jumping ship and I’m disgusted that we allowed him to go for so little, whether willingly or through stupidity in his contract.

-

Re Isco controversy:
Well, that’s football, lads, it’s all about money. Don’t forget that we “stole” Jonas from Brazil for a meager 1.5 M, while his former club thought his buyout clause was 10M …
I don’t care much if Isco left for 6M, stop whining, people. He’s COMPLETELY unproven talent in top level football, most people are drooling over his “magic” in Tercera division (that’s the FOURTH stage in Spanish football!) or in a VCF shirt against sides such as Alcorcon in Copa del rey. Please, be realistic. When a U-19 starlet refuses 700.000 EUR a year at VCF and chooses Malaga oil-dollars, that means his mind is somewhere else, certainly not in football. Let him rot on Malaga’s bench, I don’t see him as first (or even second) choice player with the signings they’re making. I think he’ll be playing for Hercules or Elche in two years, he’s the new Canales & Portillo.

-

i agree 100% with Quin .its obviouse from the begining that hes thinkin about money , so 6 mils is good money for a young player, lets sell a good defender with it to complete our team

-

@ Lillo
could be but mind he is only 19 years old, i mean its not like he has been sitting on the bench for 4 years. But i can imagine he had some expectations for the coming season and now with Piatti coming in, he saw he wouldnt get much either. Maybe we should have sold Mata and let him come up, but thats if if talk.Fuck it, its done, good luck in Malaga…
Love the SD frontpage with PIATTI, el conquistador!! He is gonna be a big one!!!

-

I am with Lillo on this, if you have a player that shows great talent but he no longer does then you have to work on bringing it back, Emery is not capable of doing that, he just benches them. Miguel,Fernandes, and Banega have all turned in brilliant performances. If they had been coached into turning in a top performance together, I am certain we would have challenged the first or second places last season. We are not Real,we cant afford to buy talent like that so dont waste them.
Isco has gone to Malaga because he was getting third division wages and having played in the first and the Champions he wanted a first division place and money to go with it. He will be playing alongside Van Nistelroy,
who will be an excellent teacher and at least Pelligrini
can see a future in him. Our first match against Malaga will be the last one before the Christmas break, that should be a lot of fun

-

Isco will be watching Van Nisterlooy from the bench … or from the stands.
BTW, he wasn’t offered third division wages but first division wages – 700.000 eur.
Mata played several years for half that much, and he was a starter for the team. That should say something about a player and his will to contribute.Again, name me one instance when Isco impressed at top level footbal, against top level team. *none?*
I agree, he should be given a chance, but he should be willing to fight for his spot as well.

-

Malaga and Pelle have been making smart signings, they haven’t been splashing 30 mill out on 1 player like City did when they first came into loads of money. I’m very excited for Malaga its brilliant. Isco came on and scored against Real in the 6-3 if I remember right, he did look a talent.
And Dan yer its going fine I guess, its got the same community of people from the offside, but you get a lot less trolls now. I still prefer the offside though, as you got more people from other offside teams coming over.

-

I havent seen much of Isco to be fair, just for the young Spanish side and I think 1 cup match. But this situation seems a little like the Rossi situation we had. We knew he was a talent, he went out on loan, but he got frustrated that he wasnt getting his chance in the team so he wanted to move to another side and get more oppertunities.
How would you feel if you’re being built up as a big talent after a successful tournament with your country where you’re considered the top player, and your club are selling their 2 most well known players… Players who play in the same positions you do. And instead of being given the chance to fill the gap left behind, you’re sent out on loan? I’m sure the club did it for the right reasons but I would suggest it has backfired.

-

Transfears have been good, although seem like cheep sales the idea is clearly to count your losses and restart, forget theire signingfee. Im not so mad about isco leaving couse he is at least two years away from overtaking parejo.

-

@ Quin, The season before last, Villa went 8 matches scoring only once and that was a Penalty !! But he never missed playing, probably the whole 90 mins each time but I wont argue on that. In the last 2 years when we have had new players Emery gives them a shot for 20 mins then maybe the next match another 20 maybe next he gets a full 90 and then if he doesnt shine like Messi or Sergi Ramos whatever his position he is put back in the cupboard.
I think this is a frustrating thing with Emery that new blood are not given the opportunity to blend in with the team which takes a few games. That is obviously the case with Isco. we waste a young good player that we have and buy another….Its the Valencia way.

-

@alemendras
yes emery should have benched mata and jonas for isco to be happy, who cares about playing in the cl. the hell with mata, jonas, emery, financial stability, cl, piatti, parejo when we might have kept isco happy enough to grace us with another season

-

@Almendras
You can’t blame Emery for this really if I was in his position I would have done the same, you shouldn’t forget Emery only gets 1 year extention and is expected a lot and if he fails he’ll lose his job so giving Isco a chance at all is already good enough.
And you can’t say that we should have offered him a new contract earlier because when he doesn’t accept this one I highly doubt he would have accepted it earlier but he left us and none of us(the club) has done anything wrong this was purely Isco. I don’t think I shouls say anything about Villa because I think I have no reason to defend him becaus we know how good he is/can be.
@Zizou
No that wasn’t Isco the one that scored against Real was Jonas, Isco wasn’t even in the bench.Again about Isco I have cooled down a bit and I don’t have an urge to kill him anymore, but I do think he will not be as good as he would have been with us. And lets forget he is playing for us it’s wrong that such a young player leaves for the money, I mean he is just 19 and he would have made a lot of money already in Valencia(700.000)but this is not just bad it’s wrong imo and bad for football, since 2004 there have has been a lot more money involved in football and since then players kind of lost their passion for the game and are just interested in money and for a 19 year old be to that way is just wrong imo.

-

I dont think Emery is to blame for Isco leaving, maybe the mangement could have handled this better by giving him an improved contract earlier.
But hey, the guy doesnt seem interested in Valencia anymore. If he wants to take the Canales route then he’s more than welcome to do so. He can warm the Malaga bench for a few years if he wants.
I just wish we could have added a first option on any future sale or something like that if the kid turns out to be a future star.

-

And to be honest, ive always thought Isco was overrrated by a lot of fans. Ive seen better 18-19 year olds and he hasnt convinced me when he played with the first team. He still needs to develop a lot to be in the level of 1st division football (no guarantees there).

-

I was having this discussion about youngsters with the head of sponsoring of Ajax’s main sponsor, Aegon, who told me she works a lot younger players of Ajax. They all get hundreds of thousands, if not millions, at a young age, don’t care about what happens but feel like kings and are like spoiled little boys.
Destroying their passion, the money, rolexes, bentleys, Gucci suits come first, football comes second. Nowadays we see Neymar’s and Banega’s being bought for mega prices after just one good season, making them millionaires in the process at just 18-19.
Valencia could have handled Isco better by not waiting for this situation to happen, very true, plus their buys didn’t actually indicate more chances for Isco. But fact is, if Malaga didn’t have the financial backing they have now, Isco would not have made this transfer. I hope he makes it there. So no need for killing Jafar, its just football

-

Isco gets to go back home.. gets a pay boost and the chance to play more. Who wouldnt take that deal.
Besides i was never overly impressed the matches i did see him play. I think 6 million for Isco is a good deal for us.

-

ahh Jonas is the guy who looks very talented then, I don’t know Isco then.
It looks like you guys are interested in Guardado…

-

@Zizou
It seems like we are link with Guardado every year and for as far as I know it’s not true plus we relegated Depor and I don’t think they will be happy to see us asking for a player making the move even more unlikely. And you guys brought Coentrao for 30M when you have a better LB in Marcelo IMO there as no reason to buy him but for the rest your transfers have been smart but I wonder how much your going to play ”the new Blanc”.@Johnnie
I was mad ok and a lot of people when they heard the news for the first time wanted to kill him, I have cooled down now but I’m still mad and I really think that money is ruining those young players I mean I have already meant 13/14 year olds trying to become pro for the money and that is just wrong. I can’t see the money leaving football for now but I really hope it will change in the future because it really looks like football is losing it’s passion which made it so great. I wish him luck there but I really think that he would be better if he stayed here and the transfer might be a blessing in disgust like Joaquin’s one(Piatti) I think we now have around 12M to spend on a CB or a CB plus RB. We had a 17M budget, we made 6M from Joaquin and Fernandez so that’s 23M and we brought Diego,Parejo and Piatti for around 17M so we have 6M + the 6M from Isco is 12M.

-

@jafar
if we get to spend those 12 mil for quality cb rb im very happy and wont fear to loose our spot to villareal, patetico, sevilla or malaga. + we havnt signed any shirt deals yet. we got 3,5 from unibet and with the new squd and potencial arrivers i think we can push the shirt into 5-6 mil at least. i cant belive patetico get 10 mil and we 3,5

-

I say we buy Canella of Sporting and Kjaer from Wolfsburg. If possible for 12 Mio!

-

Asier del Horno has left Valencia. Feghouli is staying though. Llorente said Aduriz is staying 100% and the next priority is a CB. Miguel might stay too.
Plus im starting to like the home kit, getting used to them, not so much the black and orange though.
Damn this is a good summer, finally a total sale of surplus players, what we have been wanting for years, is finally happening!!!
