Boring?
By: Cesar | November 23rd, 2008
Goal.com’s Arjun Miglani may call himself a football fan/journalist, but based on his assessment of yesterday’s 0-0 draw between Valencia and Sevilla, I’m not so sure of the former.
Here’s Mr. Miglani’s take on yesterday’s match …
Both these sides harbour ambitions of challenging for the title, but, on the basis of this performance, that appears to be an unrealistic goal. A game that was supposed to display the brilliance of La Liga ended up being a shamefully poor advertisement. The fans who attended the stadium would not be out of order in asking for their money back.
I’m guessing we didn’t see the same match.
I saw two teams play a fabulous, riveting encounter. Granted, it wasn’t the 1970 World Cup final.
Still, to watch this match and call it boring makes me think they’ve no idea who they’re employing over at goal.com Headquarters.
There were rough patches through out the match. That happens in every game.
But boring?
I guess our budget needs to cross the $100 billion thresh hold a la Real Madrid and Manchester United for them to find us ‘exciting’ …
Anyways, enough of my whining …
I watched the match at a local restaurant in upstate NY as the wait staff cleaned utensils and gossiped about their lives around me … not exactly Nevada Smith’s, eh?
I’ve never done this before, but I took a plethora of notes during the match. I think the best way to write my thoughts on the match is to focus on the players and tell you what I thought about them, sort of like a ‘Player Ratings’-type thing …
Here’s my take on the ‘boring’ match of last night, player by player and then generally …
Renan – Best game the Brazilian’s had since coming to us. Made a wicked save on Kanoute’s bicycle kick and a wonderful reflex save at the end of the first half. The defense helped him out as did Sevilla’s generally poor offensive display. But maybe Renan’s game is finally coming together.
Miguel – The big-boned Portuguese defender is quickly becoming my favorite Valencia player. This guy just keeps going and going. He’s up, he’s down. He’s a maniac on the ball and a fit for anyone to defend. He’s certainly come onto his own the past season. Made some excellent passes while playing up and defended well in his own area. He’s awesome … simply awesome.
Albiol – He did what he needed to. Solid game and made the center a no-man’s land for Kanoute and Fabiano. Then again, they didn’t really do much …
Alexis – Kind of invisible. But he’s been that since he’s been here. Which is a good thing … center backs should be seen and not heard. Good game by the defender. GREAT foot save at the end of the game to salvage the point.
Moretti – Ya know, he wasn’t so bad yesterday. Even rushed up into the offensive zone a few times during the match. Maybe we’ve been hard on the Italian non-international? Maybe he’s been reading the blog and gotten so frustrated by our hatred of him that he tried to turn in a great performance?
Whatever … he played well. And you know what he gets for it? An injury … We’ll see how long he’s out for … that would be a pain. Why? Because Del Horno is also hurt … the return of Curro Torres, anyone??
Marchena – I go back and forth on this guy. He had a wonderful Euro 2008 but too often plays a shoddy game for us. He did ok yesterday but nothing special. Anyone notice how Baraja pushed him out of the way to take a free-kick, only to sail it into the 3rd deck of the stadium?
Baraja – The old man still has a few tricks. Took his typical 80-yard field goal shot but laid on some decent passes to Villa and generally did a good job.
Fernandes – A beast. The lad’s a beast. He’s like Miguel: everywhere. This guy is only going to get better. He’s quick on the ball, has excellent pace and a good vision of the field. He makes errors here and there but overall, he’s growing into a very good player. I was confused by the Edu substitution.
Joaquín – Another guy that manages to frustrate every few weeks. The first few minutes he was everywhere. Ran a great ball through the middle before he was fouled. Then was invisible for about 30 minutes. We really need Pisha to step up and show what he’s worth. This is not the same player that came over from Betis. For those of you watching on GOL TV, how funny was it when the announcers cried foul when Joaquin was hit in the eye? They were growing tired of the play-acting, saying how awful it is for the game, making fun of Joaquin for putting his hands to his face … and they they saw the blood on his face … oh …
Mata – Put some weak shots on the Sevilla net and although he worked himself into good positions, wasn’t able to execute. Not the best game he’s ever had. Where was Morientes?
Villa – Isolated for much of the game. Worked hard but not much he could really do. Again, where was Morientes? Or Zigic? I think having someone else up front would have helped El Guaje. Still, an overall good performance.
Edu – The only sub to have any real time on the pitch. Made a nice move on some Sevilla defenders near the end of the match but couldn’t finish. He should get more time on the pitch. I think he’s good enough to help out if given adequate minutes.
So that’s it …
I think we played well and probably deserved the point we got.
After wards, coach Unai Emery shrugged his shoulders a lot and talked about the match.
“I’m happy with the image the team showed because it’s a good result. It could have been better, but not to concede in such a difficult stadium, against such a difficult opponent, is important. Therefore, we can be satisfied with the result.”
Elaborating on the encounter, Emery said, “We controlled the game, especially in the first half, and I would even say that we had the best chances. It’s true that both teams had some openings in which they did not want to risk a lot, and it prevented them from making the final blow. What is important is that we played as a team, that was the key.
“It was an intelligent game, we would have liked more points but so would they.”
And that’s that.
Boring? Hardly … I even heard Timothy Lakefront get a shout out on Gol TV! How is that boring??
Then again, I am a Valencia fan. I find their matches exciting for some odd reason.
AMUNT!!

i would have podolski in attack, with villa!!.But the problem is the english clubs will increase the amount of the player and we would not be able to cope up with it currently. He will probably end up going to machester city, they will give him some 5 million salary and promise first team football,it will end up like robinho.
something must be dont against these clubs…Posted from

I watched the match on Al Jazeera Channel Live and it was a good game specially defensively. As for goal.com I don’t think we need to listen to them cause I guess they are not professional enough to be unbiased!
The only problem was removing Fernandez and bringing on Edu cause it would have been better to bring a striker!
Villa wasted a good chance when the game was about to finish and to be honest I thought he was going to score it.Anyhow the upcoming games are tough of course and even team is playing a good team so we need to get as many points as possible. If we play against barcelona how we played against Seville then I guess we can get a WIN or a DRAW.Nothing else!
We must make amends for that 6 -0 we had in there last time which was the first time it happened in like what? 5 years?.

I was just thinking about how awesome it would be to get Podolski, but his pricetag/salary will be just too much for our bank account, which as we know is in the red. We’re better off going young or getting a mid-range striker. Although Moretti didn’t get absolutely destroyed by Navas this weekend – largely because Alexis gave him support – we are in dire need of a left back, even more so because both of ours are injured. I think Curro Torres will have to play. I don’t see any other way. Anybody got any ideas on a good left back to buy???

Thanx Cesar, i watched the game from minute 66 nd up! i think the game wasnt boring… i think the worse 2 performaces was mata and the referee! im glad to see maduro play, i think hes hardworking! would love to see zigic soon!
i dnt like podolski, he doesnt have a great mantality,, he just happen to be in the right place at the right time.. most of his goals r from diverted balls.. it hits the face abd changed direction nd there is podolski to score! i thin hes lucky more thn anything! nd luck doesnt exist all the time! unless ur Real Madrid offcourse!!
Id take Olic over podolski… we need a striker who the opponents fear.. we need sm1 like drogba! abramovic! Van nestelroy! but for now Olic would do the job! hes like Nedved,,, age doesnt seem a factor in his playing ability,, Nedved is 35 and u see him all over the pitch! unlike our dinasour ( morientes) he could barely run!Posted from

@ Ali: They have Christian Pander (a German player) as a left back in Schalke, but maybe you’re talking about the Brazilian Rafinha? He plays as a right back there and is simply amazing and only 23. The guy is better than any right back in la liga. I can’t believe no big clubs have him yet, I remember when he played against us he caused us a lot of problems on the right.

@ Timothy
I read Podolski wouldnt mind going back to 1. FC Köln if Bayern lets him, so i would say if they have a chance than we certainly also do so. Only prob might be, he would talk to Hildebrand and Hildebrand would say: NOOO!!! But we can always try, i think we have a shot.A left back, good question, how is Marseille’s Taiwo doing, he was in the picture once and i know he really rocks!!! But Marseille doesnt sell, or at least not cheap..

Podolski would actually much prefer to go back to Koln; it’s just far from certain that they can afford him.

rafinha…fond memories anyone??albelda was red carded for his tackle on rafinha last season CL..that was the last he played… for a long time…if rafinha can play as a lb as well as he does in rb..we should really go after him..schalke dont sell for cheap either

i was talking about Kobiashvili
http://www.schalke04.de/team_photo.html?&player=11&cHash=b19817889d he’s a decent player.. no doubt better than both Del horno and Moretti put together in the game..and he knows how to cross!

ah yes, the feisty georgian. he’s pretty good. i wonder how much they’d part with him for.

hey guys dont u think Kobiashvili is too old…may be we should look for someone who is around 26 or 27 with some experience

Yeah Kobiashvili is great, but does he play as a left midfielder or a left back? Im not too sure but I think ive seen him play as a left midfielder. Anyway I think Rafinha is way better than Miguel (I know Miguel is in great form but Rafinha crosses better and is more solid defensively and is only 23, plus he’s already a Brazilan international).

Anyway ignore my last commment im daydreaming
We are almost broke and we can worry about our right back position in a couple of years, we have more pressing positions to worry about namely : a striker, left back, and goalkeeper (if Timo leaves).Posted from

Of course I would love to have Rafinha, but Schalke would be idiotic to let him go now, especially for a modest fee, which is the only kind of fee we could afford. They will likely keep him for a year or two, then he will be swooped by Madrid or Barca for 30 mill – that seems to be how things work.

Hi Fayez, if this is “almost broke” I dread to think what you call `broke` we are trying to whittle down 600 million at the moment. Before anything else we must have a first class goalkeeper. Everyone here seems disastisfied with Renan. Hilde will never be a feature and everyone knows it and Guaita MUST GO BACK TO 2ndb.
Any fan of Valencia should be concerned the way they treat their 2nd team. Many years ago they were in 2ndb and Valencia took their goalie RANGEL
I saw him play many times and he was good but Valencia did not use him and watched the B team go down to the next division. They have been years trying to get back up
(It is very difficult because it is not enough to win your division you have to go into play-offs at the end) They finally did it last season. Valencia let Canizares go and took Gaita and the second team are in the relegation position. Gaita has hardly been used,he is young and needs games every week to progress and could be a good prospect for the future. We must respect the 2nd team and build it up so that we have a good training ground for our future players. This is common sense but Valencia never did have much of that.Posted from

The coach of Valencia, Unai Emery, worked with a group of twelve players to prepare for the game against Rosenborg in Norway, which were not Alexis Ruano, Joaquin Sanchez, David Villa, Ruben Baraja and goalkeeper Renan Brito.

The group was formed by Guaita, Miguel, Marchena, Albiol, Del Horno, Pablo, Albelda, Edu, Manuel Fernandes, Mata and Morientes, in addition to the left side of the subsidiary, Jaume Costa
I dont know what to make out of it,Either emery thinks that his second eleven can win the match at rosenborg or he doesnt care abt uefa cup

@ Almendras : Hahaha…I think “almost broke” is us right now, but “broke” would be a team like Leeds United

Anyway I agree with you on our 2nd team, what you said is so correct, we have to develop our 2nd team. When I look at the under-20 and under-18 Spanish squad they barely have any of our players and we really should work on that part. If we get good scouts that find these young prospects we definitely would be saving money on the long run. During the Benitez era he really concentrated on this part of the team (and he is doing the same with Liverpool right now), however Soler ruined that mentality and started buying older and developed players (which is partly why we are short on cash now).@ Siva : To be honest I really hope Emery doesnt concentrate on the UEFA right now. We have some very important matches coming up in the coming weeks that would be crucial to get a good result in if we want to challenge for a top 4 spot. Top 4 is definitely Valencia’s priority this year and if any of our important players get injured in the tough match against Roseborg then we are definitely losing points in the coming weeks.

I just think Emery should play Maduro instead of Albelda and Viana instead of Fernandes.

Taiwo is good and he was linked with valencia sometime ago but I’m not if they will even try to get him:)
