Atletico Preview and Live Chat

By: Cesar | May 17th, 2009

Today’s the biggest match in Valencia CF history.

Ok, I’m being facetious. But in some ways, it’s about as important as it gets.

Champions League ‘09-’10. Economic viability. Keeping our two stars. Keeping the core of our squad together. Getting our new stadium up and running … all of these things are at stake the next three weeks as we find out whether the current incantation of Our Beloved can steer their way into Europe and perhaps, save themselves.

No pressure, eh?

The scene? Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon, located in the heart of Madrid by the banks of the River Manzanares. It’s a raucous arena and all 54,851 seats will be jam packed for this knock-out, drag-out main event match up.

The teams? Our Beloved will be missing Carlos Marchena and David Silva. Marchena through suspension (surprise!) and Silva through injury (d’oh!).

With Emiliano Moretti also injured, that could mean a center back pairing of Maduro and Albiol, one sure to cause anxiety for Valencia fans world wide.

Still, it’s not like their defense is world class. Ortiz? Ujfaluis? Pablo? Pernia? C’mon …

Banega?!? Please …

It’s at offense where both clubs are stacked. On our side, we have the world’s greatest striker David Villa, coupled with Pablo, Mata and Joaquin.

On their side, the Mattress Makers counter with Diego Forlan, Sergio Aguero, Raul Garcia and Simao.

Uggh.

Could be a tight match, an offensive fireworks show. We’ll see.

Goal.com’s prediction?

With arguably two of the best front-lines in the league up against two defences that are far from solid, there is sure to be plenty of drama at the Calderon on Sunday evening. In such an unpredictable game there is no doubt that either team could come out on top, but the likelihood is that there will be a few goals, more than a few bookings, and a point each for Atletico and Valencia.

Atletico Madrid 2-2 Valencia

The urgency is high for both squads coming into this match. We need it. They need it.

I say we need it more. 3-2 to Valencia …

Live chat? I should be around, so I’ll try my hand at it … I’ll have it up by 2:45 EST.

See you there and AMUNT!!!! WE NEED THIS ONE!!
