Another Week, Another Win …
By: Cesar | October 20th, 2008
I’m loving this way too much, I really am …
Valencia’s 4-0 victory over Numancia at the Mestalla yesterday opened up a two-point gap at the top of the Spanish La Liga.
The unambitious David Villa added two goals to increase his league-leading tally to eight. Vicente and Mata added the other two.
We’re gliding right now. Coasting. Enjoying our stay at the top of the Spanish table. And rightfully so.
Numancia came into the game without a win in five but they started positively by winning a corner inside the opening minute and created the game’s first chance.
However, that was as good as it got for the visitors because within four minutes our Beloved were ahead and cruising.
Villa, fresh from scoring a last-gasp midweek winner for Spain in Belgium, tried his luck with a ferocious shot from distance.
The ball ricocheted off a defender and into the face of Fernando Morientes, rolling kindly back into Villa’s path and he effortlessly slotted home from 12 yards. Goal #1.
For Valencia, it was a lucky break that allowed them to relax and enjoy their football as they spent the remainder of the first half creating numerous half-chances without ever really getting out of second gear.
It should have been 2-0 midway through the half when Villa sprung the offside trap and fired home following some neat build-up play from Joaquin and Mata but the linesman raised his flag, much to the annoyance of the striker who it seemed had timed his run to perfection.
For half-an-hour either side of the break, the visitors gave goalie Renan plenty to do in the Los Che goal but the Brazilian keeper was never really called upon to make anything other than routine saves.
If nerves were beginning to creep into Valencia’s game while the teams were still only separated by one goal, that ended at the 72nd minute when Mata prodded home a gift from Cesar Palacios.
A slide-rule pass from Villa seemed harmless enough but the defender’s desperate lunge merely directed the ball into the Mata’s path and he made no mistake with an instant finish beyond the despairing Juan Pablo.
The visitors lost all of their resolve from that moment and they were soon made to pay as Vicente smashed home a third at the back post on 83 minutes.
Villa then completed the scoring in the dying moments by hooking home a through ball from Manuel Fernandes with Juan Pablo stranded off his line.
So another week, another win.
Of course, we need to take all of this in stride. Not let our heads get too big. We should enjoy this. Of that there’s no doubt. But remember, what goes up can come down. And in our case, we have a rough stretch of matches coming up in about a month’s time.
Until then .. we’re in first place. Isn’t it lovely??
As Villa said after the game, ‘We are where we are in the table because of our own merits. To be at the top after seven rounds has made us think that if we can maintain this form, we will be in a good position towards the end of the season,’ he concluded.
How true …
Some tidbits:
- Coach Unai Emery has amassed more points in seven games than Ronnie ‘TinTin’ Koeman did in 22 games. Wow … He’s also equaled Rafa Benitez’s start with Valencia back in 2003-04, when the current Liverpool boss also won six games and drew just one against Valladolid.
Impressive, eh?
- Revealing interview with Vicente before yesterday’s game. He’s had a hard time the last few years with injury and such, but when he’s on, he’s simply one of the best in the game. Let’s hope he stays healthy …
Here’s a revealing excerpt from the interview about Koeman …
“If Koeman had stayed I would of had to leave Valencia as he did not believe in me. With him I didn’t play a lot and I felt left out, I do not know why, but something saved me eventually.”
“I do not believe that Koeman is going to manage important teams, he does not have the quality for it. We had very good coaches [at Valencia] that worked with us a lot tactically, with Koeman we did nothing. His talks did not last even five minutes and all he did was wish us luck and tell us to play well,” said the winger.
Luckily, we have a real coach now. And look where we are these days … amazing what motivation can do for you …
- So now Juan Villalonga wants to be the next president of Real Madrid?
Where did all that love for Valencia CF go?
Maybe Vicente Soriano was right. Maybe this guy was talking out of the side of his mouth.
Just last month, rumors were swirling that he wanted to buy Getafe. This after his flirtation with us.
Now, he wants in with Madrid.
I don’t know what to make of it … wish him good luck? Say thanks for trying to buy us?
How about this? Who cares …
These are great days to be a Valencia fan. Why worry about what the other guys are doing, right?

who r u Quin? Ice Cube’s little brother? I loved that (sentence/dare to words) rite there
Btw; big part of our current success belongs to the players but let’s not forget about our coach. “the strategy man as I read in many websites.”

I Co-sign what Quin said. What more do our detractors want? Villa’s goals don’t really count because he hasn’t scored them directly from corners with the back of his head? Liga points gathered before the US elections don’t count because the players are distracted? Piss off! We can only beat what they put in front of us, and teams like Real Madrid have been far from convincing thus far.. bring them on!!

Man Bob lucky bastard having 2 dicks today
How good can your day be!!! I just read Valencia is interested in my fellow-Dutchman Demy de Zeeuw playing for AZ Alkmaar. We are doing great already, why do we need another midfielder, and why in the hell must it be Demy de Zeeuw?? Not impressed with this guy, although he makes AZ run, he wont make Valencia CF run…

More news mates, seems we are after 2 other players, Olic from HSV (his agent confirmed the contact) and Gomez apparently has flown to Split for Hajduk Splits topscorer (10 goals in 11 games) and labeled “future of croatian football” Nikola Kalinic…
I’d say that last move is great, cause he is 20, great future ahead and scoring a lot of goals. Olic on the other hand might be strong, but he is 29 plus he hasnt been scoring too much…

Johnnie, thanks for the news.
Where’d ya see it?Posted from

@ Cesar,
about everywhere. I check Las Provincias, As, Superdeporte, Marca en Goal.com every day plus the dutch media as well. Also Tribalfootball.com shows some stuff, never believe that but if you check their rumours out at Google news than you see the latest updates haha… Anyway, i have my daily routine of checking VCF news…About this croatian dude, Gomez is on his way with 7 million euros, convinced it will be enough to buy Kalinic. I’ve seen some videos of the guy, he looks talented mate, confident, good technique, tall, looks like a great lad next to Villa!!! Fingers crossed, there are not that many options…

Well with Morientes on his way out this being his last year here and Zigic going and Angulo well past his prime we should sign a striker to help out Villa up front. I personally like Huuntelar and Guiza. Both are very active forwards with a nose for goal. But if this 20 year old is good why not take a look at him.

I agree, we could probably give Kalinic a shot. For 7mil euros this can’t possibly be worse than some of the shitty deals we’ve made in recent times to shore up our attack (read Nikola Zigic and the obscene price Jabba the hut paid for him)

Let’s swoop Kalinic and give El Guaje some backup. I like going young, and certainly as opposed to buying a tall, clumsy Serbian in his late 20s. We’re obviously doing great without new players, but we definitely need another striker and – for the love of god – a Moretti replacement at left back. Then we’d be quasi-set. Let’s keep it up against Recre this weekend. If any of you guys have FIFA 09 on PS3, let’s play online. ID: HACL

i think we need 2 more strikers, its not logical to lett zigic, angulo,nd morientes go, and replace then with one 20 year old striker! i know we have mata! but still we need an experienced striker… so olic and nikola kalinic will do i think! and please a replacment for morretti!

Hi, Another buy-up story from Valencia, we had them all year and ended up with Renan in desperation having not offered enough for Palop and the return of Pablo.
After not being able to pay enough for Kerrison, they now cannot pay more than 7 mill. for Kalinic. A good goalscorer, International as youth and adult, 20 years old,1.87 tall and plenty of clubs interested in him, why go if you havent got money in your pocket.7 mill. wont buy quality nowadays. We look forward to the next fishing story. AlmendrasPosted from

We should have enough money from zigic’s deal to pay for nikola kalinic! with the 7 million we r already planning to buy him with. I personaly think that we should sell pablo hernandes, he can be good but not good enough for valenica if they want to win anything, he might be good for getafe or mallorca maybe! we should also sell morretti to any italina team tht are interested…

@ Ali,
thing is apparently Gomez had previously agreed a deal for 10 million, now thinking he could go back after a while and pay 7, but Split didnt wanna lower their price. So forget about him, cause we cant afford him apparently, we cant go as far as 10! But that seems odd, since we didnt pay much during the summer… Pfff Valencia, why dont we just buy someone for once. Now we will end up with a mediocre player, overpaid, who will lose us more money in the end by not scoring goals…Posted from

What about Tevez from Man u they are’nt using him. Scarry if we had him it would be lights out. Never would happen but nice to dream.

I think we all have to be patient this year..I highly doubt we would spend much in the winter market (unless we manage to sell several of the fringe players – which seems highly unlikely). Providing Villa stays fit and Silva returns (and Moro bangs in 10-12 goals by the end of the season) we might just survive this season. The new stadium is really going to make the situation difficult on us, so things should get better in the summer.
Let’s not forget how dire our fianncial situation really is and we have to give credit to Gomez and co for not going overboard in the market.Posted from

tevez, put a muzzle on it and let it go.id love to see it play for us.how would emery motivate him ? put a chili up his gary and sit back…….id play him at right back and just tell him to kick lumps out of anything that moves, should liven the vomitotio up.seriously good player but looks like a natural born killer

Alright i seriously dont think we should be coughing any more than 7 -10 million. Realistically Valencia are in a mountain of debt untill the land for Mestalla is sold and we are in the new stadium making money. I consider that we held on to SIlva Joaquin and Villa better than any signing we could have mustered and in doing so it cost valencia at least 60 million in cash in hand. So lets not get pestery.. i personally dont think we need to sign anybody this winter.. lets make due with what we have and offload Zigic for a bit of debt repayment untillt he land is sold. Our team si solid as long as Villa stays fit up front. Mata is comming along and Morientes is our Villa buddy till the end of teh season.
Slva will be comming back by christmas and personally i think that Moretti and del horno can hold their own right now in the LB. Miguel is the only worried spot .. who can cover his possition as well as him. right now if he gets hurt we wold have to place Albiol there. And that worries me in the middle.
Next summer we can sign a nice Striker and a defender. Renan looked solid int he back and if Palop or Reina isnt comming i think eh will be our Number 1. I cant think of any other keeper worth spending millions on rigth now.. especially since teh defence is far more impostant than the keeper.
I really really really like the form that the managment has been taking in signing young talented players. Mata. Sunny. Banega. Silva. Alex. Albiol. fernandes All decent young guys with talent. I also think it was a good idea to loan a couple out so they could get Liga experience.
If this keeps up we can win the liga

Bob, man, you’ve made my day with the “it” Tevez comment!
“Put a chili up his gary and sit back”. I don’t think he needs one but it still sounds great.
Tevez could actualy out-Kily Kily Gonzales.Regarding Croatian players: I’m not to keen on them. Olic is not bad but he’s too cold-warm, And PLEASE don’t spend 10M on an unknown Hajduk youngster.
