Another Game of the Year
By: Cesar | April 14th, 2007
The Mestalla Chronicles keep on keeping on, with Valencia involved in a chase to the finish line for a spot in the Champions League next season.
A battle of heavyweights takes place at the Mestalla, with La Liga trendsetters Sevilla taking on our beloved Sunday evening. A loss for Los Che all but ends our chase for the championship and seriously damages our run to the Champions League next season.
For Sevilla, it could not be any tighter at the top as they sit between leaders Barcelona and Real Madrid. Despite another sensational UEFA Cup run, there has been a faint hint of fatigue in Spain of late, and a defeat here, while not disastrous, would be a blow to their morale.
Can Valencia lift their heads after their deflating loss to Chelsea midweek? Coach Quique Sanchez Flores will need to break out the motivational quotes and audio tapes to get the troops in line. The patchwork team will probably miss the services of Raul Albiol, injured in the Chelsea match. Pallardo or Hugo Viana could partner David Albelda in midfield. David Silva could also miss the match, but Flores has more options up front, with Angulo or Morientes starting.
Sevilla are a dangerous team. Fortunately, Malian international and current Spanish Pichichi Frederic Kanoute will miss this match after picking up a groin injury in London. But what’s lost when players such as Adriano, Luis Fabiano and attacking full back Dani Alves are pushing the Valencian midfield?
The Andalucians are stacked and hungry. They’re a high-flying outfit and not the best team for Valencia to face at the moment. My heart says we’ll take this but my head says we’ll lose.
Prediction: Valencia 0 Sevilla 2
I don’t trust Quique, I don’t think the team is up to it and I think we’ll lose this and bounce back big next weekend at the Santiago Bernabeu and Real Madrid. But this week, we slip some.
There’s some season left. Let’s hope I’m wrong.

Well, we’ll see what happens this evening. The main task is now classifying for next Champions League, of course. But fighting for La Liga is the best way to assuring this.

It’s a shame you have to be knocked out only to have your two most difficult games of the season in a row. Considering Barcelona’s current problems it looks like I’ll be a Che fan for the next two weeks. Amunt Valencia, you probably can’t win the league but the CL won’t be the same without you, plus your Catalan neighbors need some help, especially with a trip to the Calderon comming up soon.

Nolan, I couldn’t agree more! There’s no doubt I was rooting for Los Che today and I’ll be doing it again next weekend as well (though, honestly, perhaps a draw is best for Barcelona…sorry Cesar!)
