Another Fiasco …
By: Cesar | January 26th, 2009
Another week, another game that fills our belly with anxiety and causes the gastric juices to run full boil.
This weekend, it was 19th place Real Mallorca. A 3-1 defeat and what can be said?
For starters, it appears coach Unai Emery’s decision to play a squad of reserves back fired to a degree. Although I agree that David Villa needed rest, the decision to sit players like Joaquin and Villa might have hurt the team in the long run.
Many think Unai is playing for the Copa del Rey tie this week against Sevilla. While I agree, the more telling situation is that this team is simply not big enough for 3 competitions (UEFA Cup, Copa, Liga).
We’ve a squad of many players. But how many fill the roles they’re supposed to and adequately?
We have a back-up striker who has seen better days (Morientes).
A midfield that deploys 87-year olds (Baraja, Albelda).
A defense that often sees former strikers (Angulo).
A bench that sits many guys who simply never play (Curro Torres, Hugo Viana).
And of course, there are the dinks in the armor, players injured or not able to play (Alexis, Renan, Joaquin).
So where does that leave us? A team in desperate need of reinforcements. Of course, we have no money. So there goes that hope.
I understand the Valencia brass wants to win something this season. It’s the 90th anniversary of the VCF brand, the Copa del Rey final is at the Mestalla and we’re the defending champions.
But with our financial situation, shouldn’t league play and a Top 4 finish be a more pressing concern that winning a secondary championship?
As for the game itself, we simply didn’t play well. The fill-ins were not good enough.
Guaita isn’t as bad as I make him out to be, but he’s not very good. Del Horno is simply not the player he was when he left Spain for Chelsea a few years ago. The defense is putrid, especially with Maduro in central defense (It says something when Moretti is the best defender on the pitch).
Miguel looked winded yesterday. There was a lack of creativity in midfield and the offense wasn’t as clinical as it could have been.
So although we missed El Guaje and Pisha, there was a lot more wrong with this squad than those two.
For instance, there’s the case of comedic refereeing we’re seeing week and and week out in Spain. This week, it involves Raul Albiol, who grabbed Mallorca striker Jose Jurado’s shirt outside the box yet was awarded a penalty. How does a player have his shirt grabbed outside the box yet tumble FORWARD?
Whatever. On to Sevilla on Thursday.
Afterward, Emery took blame for the loss.
“In my time at Valencia this is as poorly as we’ve played, and the culprit is me. I’ll take the blame for this defeat.”
Valencia haven’t kept a clean sheet in all competitions since winning in Rosenborg on November 27th, and their problems at the back are well documented, with Dutchman Maduro being drafted in as an auxiliary defender due to injuries and suspensions.
However Emery avoided deflecting criticism onto his players and continued to accept the blame for the performance.
“I didn’t see how we could possibly go 3-0 down at the end of the first half. I couldn’t get the players to the necessary level of motivation. The job of the coach is to get the best from his players, and today I couldn’t do that.”
Lots of criticism has been leveled at Emery by me and others after yesterday’s game.
But really, how much better could he have done? He’s leagues better than Ronald Koeman. He’s motivated the team about as well as he could have, considering the absence of David Silva for a significant portion of time. He’s got an awful defense, a tired front line and a midfield lacking that creative element. There’s no influx of cash coming … what else can he do?
After Emery’s statements, the diminutive Juan Mata rushed onto the stage atop a step ladder to let the media know Emery is, in fact, not at 100% fault.
“I believe the fault is with us all, not just the coach, in the same way that when we win, we all win. He chooses the team, but we are the players that have to perform on the pitch, and yesterday we were not good,” he told the media.
“He is a very demanding coach, who gives his all, and he is as hurt as we are. The game leaves us with a bad taste, but we must be ready for the Copa Del Rey this week. We know that yesterday we did not play our best, but we want Thursday to arrive so we can atone, to reach the semi-finals and to start a new run.”
Even though Mata admitted his side were not at their best, he also acknowledged that Mallorca played well, and took their chances.
“I don’t believe the attitude of the team was bad, but Mallorca were strong and clinical in front of goal. In the first-half, they took their opportunities, and killed the match,” he mused (mused?).
“It is clear that in the last few games we have conceded a lot, but up front we are doing well. What we mainly have to work on is the defense.” (You need DEFENDERS to work on the defense …)
One man who Mata did not want to criticize was goalkeeper Vicente Guitia, who he said it would be unfair to blame.
“He has always been here and never raised his voice when he has not played. He is a great goalkeeper and has the support of everyone, but the decision of who plays on Thursday is of the coach,” he said.
“For me, the criticism we receive when we lose does not seem just, because when we win everything is good.”
Huh? That was a weird last sentence …
One last tidbit before I leave: Apparently we’re after another Brazilian starlet, this one named Wellington Aparecido Martins. He’s a 17-year old defensive midfielder and plays for Sao Paulo.
He’s played a total of ONE appearance with the senior squad …
Honestly, can’t we invest the money in someone just a little more proven? Maybe someone like Rufete??

@ fayez.. ur right nike stores are everywhere… but the thing is, there arn’t any valencia shirts here in the middle east and the US( i talk bout those 2 plaves cuz iv lived there and have seen what nike stores have), where addidas stores here in dubai and kuwait have liverpool, bayern, chelsea etc…. so i think if nike would only distribute our shirt to more places around the world, wed get more than 2 million a year profit, which is the diefference between kappa offer and nike’s (current deal).

@Ali, from what i understand it translates to Sevilla wants bat meat… That sort of means that Seville are eager to beat us in the copa but in a really aggressive way….Like trying to say that theyre gonna devour us.

@Ali:
Just a couple of lines that I think were the most “shit talking”la afición tiene que incendiar el ímpetu del equipo para abrasar a los ávidos murciélagos:
The fanbase needs to ignite the impetus of the team in order to burn the eager bats…45.000 puños al viento pidiendo carne de murciélago, desafiando el pasado, listos para concebir un bello alumbramiento, por lo civil o por lo criminal:
45,000 fists to the wind asking for bat meat, challenging the past, ready to conceive a beautiful birth (oh spanish people….), by the civil or by the criminalThe last one I think, “the criminal”, is what might have pissed some people off.
I apologize for my translations, I hate having to translate between english and spanish as sometimes it just doesn’t sound right!

13.56 Skysports.com can reveal that midfielder Sunny is in negotiations with Portsmouth and is set to join the South Coast club on loan.
–
Would be an excellent move for him I’d say. Portsmouth have been forced to sell most of their best players recently and have been known to like physical players in the middle of the park. However the report suggested that the loan would be with a view to a permanent move… Hope thats not the case.

17.06 Valencia midfielder Sunny’s move to Portsmouth looks to have collapsed, skysports.com understands.
–
Oh well. Perhaps it was the fee/permanent move thing that collapsed it.

lol. for the hand clapping types down there eating bat meat isnt that rare along with hedgehog pie.
we should wear betis shirts to wind them up,sevilla are the self proclaimed royalty of that fair city while betis represent the more common working man proll.
for those that havent been i heartily reccomend the derby between sevilla and betis very passionate.
great city,great music,lousy football teams.

Guys,This is not about valencia!!!
FOund this very intrestingI have written on this subject since I started on Chelsea Vital and it is very obvious that no one in the Chelsea organisation is the leaast bothered about this opinion.
So why do I do it again, well we have one reader that will throw himself with all his selfstyled arrogance and tell me that I should not. He might be right, why bother as nothing has happened since some time before Anno Domini at Chelsea.
Corners – Why do we bother taking them? We would save valuable time just giving the ball to the opposition and try to win it back again. And our centre backs would not waste energy trecking all the way over the pitch.
I remember once, yes I am that old, when Chelsea actually scored goals on some corners. We also had a brief spell in the first Mourinho-year when John Terry scored a two digit number of goals from corners and some others did also score.
I have not bothered finding the stats as I probably would be even more depressed if I check the true figures. But I think we, during 2008, scored once from a corner, at least during this season half. We usually average more than 10 corners a game. That is about 600 corners and one goal per season as we play up to 60 games a year usually. But let us be very generous. Let`s say Chelsea scored 5 goals on those 600 corners.
Miles of text has been written lately about our inability to defend on corners, also a new thing under bona jogito-Scolari. Honestly, I do not care, I find it even more important that we score on our corners.
At least Ballack and Lampard have started scoring again on free-kicks. Also Deco, Belletti, Alex have shown an ability to do that, as has Drogba. I can`t remember seeing Anelka score from a free-kick, but we can blame that on a bad memory.
Scolari has introduced zonal marking at corners. And the confusion is bigger than the fact that Signor Lippi never in 50-60 years in football professes to have met a gay player. An amazing fact considering that an average of 10% of all males are gay and that there have been several ’scandals` concerning gay prostitution with players in the clubs Lippi has managed and played in. But I digress.
30%, yes one third of all goals in football come directly or indirectly from set pieces. The most common set pieces in the vicinity of goal are the corners. Chelsea score more goals than any in the Premier League, despite not having a fraction of the number of penalties awarded to Man United each season and despite never utilising the corner kicks. Amazing facts, we should statistically score at least 20% more goals with an average result from corner kicks, and at least 30% more goals if we were good at it.
That would mean a low estimate of 120 goals on the number of corners we amass. More goals, that`s not counting the ones we already are scoring but have to work much harder for.
Some managers actually have realised that. I dare say none of them have ever visited Chelsea.
Walter Zenga in Catania in Serie A is one. Catania are known as the giant-killers in Italy. A small club from Sicily. Well known for scaring the stuffing out of and taking points from the very best teams – usually on corners. Walter Zenga himself is maybe the best goalkeeper Italy ever had, Buffon might argue. He knows what can be done at corners. He knows that it is a golden and very free opportunity to score goals.
Earlier this season Catania scored a goal after one of their players pulled down the pants on the opposition at a corner. Tricky, but legal. Just as legal as the goal the diva-diver scored on us at OT last, but it was wrongly disallowed because the referee did not know the rules of the game. (A common occurrence in England today, the present generation of English refs are not the brightest the country has produced).
Zenga has hired a man by the name Gianni Vio to coach and device methods to score from corners. Signor Vio has so far come up with 4.830 (yes, four thousand eight hundred and thirty) different methods, models, scenarios and ways to score from corners. Wonder if Chelsea know anyone but the one where Lampard hits the first man in the defence or seeks out the very well-guarded JT or Alex, instead of Ballack who is probably the best header in the team.
Since signor Vio was hired by Catania almost half of their goal chances are created on corners. Half! We should score a hundred goals easily before Easter if we had figures like that.
Signor Vio wrote a book called “30 per cent”, on this subject and Zenga who is a wise, if temperamental manager, read it and realised that maybe using the elements of the game is actually more fruitious than buying new expensive players because the fans whine for wingers or such.
Imagine what we could do if we utilised a fraction of all our corners. Then we could forgot all about whining about defending on them against lesser teams, Ipswich, Stoke, etc and celebrate many more goals. I know what I prefer. Even if Petr lost his record last night to the green bean.
Please Mr Scolari, ask signor Vio to visit Cobham.
Signor Vio says:
“Utilising set pieces is almost like having an extra forward in the games”.
You could save loads of money on such a visit Big Felipe.

Valencia are intrested in 17 year-old Colombian striker Marcos Perez !!! Not sure if he will join us but …lets see

Well I think there is something there… as I’ve said a thousand times, we suck at corner (on both ends of the field). We haven’t scored in more than a eyar off a corner!!! Perhaps we should look this guy up in the phone book…

Re: Siva / Marco Perez
Aha! Finally linked to someone I’ve watched recently!
I saw him play a few days ago and score 2 goals against Argentina under 20s in the under 20s WC, whilst captaining Columbia. His first goal was very good. Showed great skill and composure flicking the ball over the defender’s head and then volleying it past the keeper. Looks a good young talent and he’s only 17.

Neither Chelsea nor Valencia’s problems are the use of corners. That fan should be wondering whats gone wrong defensively this season

Oh and Xes, you’ve scored this season from corners. What are you talking about? I can remember an Alexis header early in the season possibly from a Mata corner and Joaquin scrambling home another Mata corner like 3 months ago.

Everything you said was spot on. I was completely surprised with Valencia’s loss, I mean really, 3-1 to Mallorca? Its becoming a new trend with the referees awarding penalties to the opposite team. Athletic Bilbao was a disaster. Its true, Baraja and Albelda are getting so played out, and so is Angulo. We need some better midfielders. I actually like Manuel Fernandes, he always seems to get the ball in midfield, and he definitely deserves to start over Baraja. Morientes is ok, but I prefer a Villa-Mata combination up front. Villa is amazing (when he’s not injured of course) and Mata is a good player. The defense needs a lot of work. Marchena is about the only good defender back there, besides Raul Albiol. What’s even worse is if a keeper like Guaita is behind an already shaky defense. Renan gives a sense of security to the back line, and we need him back. Villa is an extremely influential player, who can really put the goals in, and they need him back too (lets go Villa Maravilla for the golden boot of La Liga!). Silva is a great midfielder, and Joaquin is pretty good, but sometimes I feel like the opposite defense can read him easily. Valencia shouldn’t waste their time with players like that. We should be going for some better players, but I know we’re in a financial problem. It was like when we bought Sunny and Zigic and Arizmendi. That was a waste of money, and now Hildebrand ran out on us. Maybe if Koeman didn’t cause such an uproar last year, we’d still have Canizares.
