Angulo: They Broke My Heart and Koeman Speaks
By: Cesar | December 21st, 2007
The more I think about it, the angrier I get. I can’t BELIEVE the club I love so much would do this to players we care about so much.
They deserved to sit and not play for rubbish performances. They didn’t deserve to have their noses rubbed in it.
I’m embarrassed at the way Valencia’s handled this.
I’m sick at how the people running the team have no conscience; no respect for people who’ve sweat and given of themselves with that shirt on.
Disgraceful. But it’s the way of modern sports, here in the States and abroad. It’s all about the bottom-line. Saving face. Protecting your back. And human dignity goes out the window when that comes into play.
Who cares if Albelda cries, Canizares is angry and Angulo’s heart is broken right?
I know someone like me with my old-school opinions mean nothing to the people at Valencia.
But I really thought they were better than this.
Anyways …
More updates …
First, Miguel Angel Angulo says his heart’s broken over being sacked by coach Ronald Koeman. He’s been at Valencia for 11 years and played his entire career here except for one season at neighboring Villarreal. To watch a video of his press conference, click here …
“They broke my heart and it is going to take a long time for the scar to heal,” he said during a press conference.
“The pain is very strong. I have not started to think that I will wear a different shirt yet because I have a lot of love for Valencia. I have to move on and to advance.”
“The club have always treated me well and nicely. I have always felt like at home. As I am here since such a long time, I planned to finish here in a couple of years.
“The most catastrophic thing is that I will not be able to say goodbye to the fans. The only thing I can do is tell them “thank you” for having made me feel at home.
“I don’t feel humiliated and I don’t think that they will try to do it. They could with lies and defamation, but I keep the titles, the commitment and the efforts I made for the club.”
I made fun of you a lot but I salute you, Angulo. You always made us proud.
On a personal side note, Angulo scored the first ever Valencia goal I saw live. The picture on the left is his celebration of that goal, a scorcher past Iker Casillas in the first game of the 2001-02 season against Real Madrid at the Mestalla. I had tickets close to the field with no idea if Valencia could take out the Spanish giants, who were fielding all-world superstar Zinedine Zidane for the first time.
But 7 minutes in, Angulo receives the ball and belts one past Casillas for the winner, 1-0. Pandemonium at the Mestalla … good memories.
Also, do you remember when Angulo almost went to Arsenal? Good luck, Miguel …
Meanwhile, Koeman justified his decision to drop three of Valencia’s most experienced players as necessary to change the attitude within the squad.
“I believe the team had to change, to have people with more enthusiasm and a greater hunger, and it starts with these decisions,” Koeman told sports daily Marca on Friday.
“I have seen things that I haven’t liked from the start and I have changed them. No one has told me to do this. It is a sporting matter.”
“Since the first day I’ve come to many conclusions – on and off the field – about changing things that needed changing. Had I not done this, I could not continue as coach.”
“I’m not going to use them any more and that’s all. From this point there is another way forward with people who are excited about (the team),” said the former Benfica and Ajax coach. “I think that Valencia needs these changes … There are (other) players with more hope and greater hunger.”
Ok … don’t deny what he said. Again, have some class about it at least.

We dont know what transpired behind the scenes…as in who is responsible for the drama. I feel for Albelda and Cani..but when I think of it on an intuitive level, I dont fault Koeman. He might be daring but not stupid – he knew that he wanted these players out of the 18 member squad. Isnt that what he said – that these players are not in squad for the rest of the season?
It comes to the President, sporting director and PR (I hope a club like Valencia has someone in charge of PR) on how to handle it – they can gracefully phase these players out and at least in case of Angulo and Albelda, as there are enough suitors for them, decide whether its wise to wait or put them on transfer list immediately.

I think what pain a lot of fans is HOW it is handle. This is being done by someone who have no tie or history with the club. Agree that Valencia do need changes of the guards but at least let these loyal old guards who gave so much to the club at their peak period out through the front door, with dignity, not shoving them out one by one through the back. Repay them for the hard works and dedications they had been given the club and the fans. I wish them all well.

===========================Exactly.
They did play like crap, especially Angulo. But you don’t do that to your most experienced veterans. They could have handled it peacefully, selling them to another club. 3 of the capitans? Are they total nuts?

So as i said i am not wearing a Valencia shirt this season.. i dont like my team being run like an uncaring corporation and treating my heroes like crap.. even when they play like crap. I dont like when rich men who dont love my club but are in it for money hurt my beloved players. And so i will silently love the team i grew up with but no longer will pay for tickets or buy their jerseys.
In fact today for the first time in my life i bought a Villareal jersey. AMUNT VILLAREAL! /tear

I am sorry but this is BS. Raul has paid like crap for 4 yrs and Madrid didn’t give him the boot. Give me a break and now Koeman is tearing apart the National team. This is so shameful. So sad.

This is ridiculous. All of a sudden Koeman comes along and rips apart Valencia. Canizares is a great goalie, and in my opinion, one of the best. How can you get rid of a world class veteran like him? He always saves valencia. He recently did, in their last chelsea game. I have to admit, the team does need a shake-up, but not like this. Koeman who has no ties to Valencia whatsoever comes and thinks he can get rid of Canizares, and even Albelda. David Villa is my favorite player and I hope he moves to Real Madrid, there is no point in him staying on a team that is being reconstructed and losing talent by the minute. Before you know it, all the players who are actually worth something are going to go. I thought Capello shook up Real Madrid. He did nothing compared to what Koeman’s did in 3 days. I agree with Elisa, Raul is playing horribly, yet he starts every game. Canizares and Albelda were chopped for no reason. I’m sure the other fans and players are not going to like this. What a disgrace.

Hi, before you get too excited (like Koeman) remember that the win was against a third division club and the draw was against Zaragoza that hasn’t won for 7 matches and last game was against a third division club. The next Liga will be at home against Levante who in 17 games have managed 2 wins and a draw.Koeman has lost 11 points in 6 weeks.Mora made 2 silly mistakes resulting in 2 goals. Koeman threw away a first class goalie for Mora who’d played once in 2 years forcing him to take a goalie from the 4th division Val Mestalla, I don’t believe this. Mestalla were top of their Liga before the weekend and are desperately trying to regain 3rd division
Valencia were responsible for them going down a couple of years ago when they took Rangel (a fine keeper) and never used him,and then sold him.As you know they have started the quest for Lucho again (20 to 30K euros) and I read today in the Spanish press they are interested in Jovanovic a forward(another one?) of Standard de Lieja, Belgium. After spending 18k in the wrong direction for Fernandes because the curtain was going down,Ruiz has now put the plans in motion to swap him for the Spanish player Arteta of Everton.Koeman is happy because he had already had a bust up in Portugal with Fernandes.
