And So It Ends

By: Cesar | May 29th, 2009

And just like that, the season ends.

Today’s it’s the 38th and final match of the season, a home game against Athletic Bilbao.

A point and we’re in Europe’s second tier competition, the UEFA Europa League. A loss and we could conceivably be out of Europe all together.

Call me crazy, but I’m not all that excited about being in the Europa League. I’d hoped we were good enough to make it to the Champions League. But it was not to be.

So let’s take what we can get. A win and we’re a more attractive prospect for would-be transfers. That’s if we have enough money to buy more than a bag of balls.

Tomorrow will also be the final match in a Valencia CF kit for many Valencia players. We already know that Fernando Morientes and Manolo’s Curro Torres are done after tomorrow.

Many can guess that David Albelda, Ruben Baraja, Miguel Angel Angulo, Hugo Viana and Emiliano Moretti won’t be around next season.

But who else could leave?

Good byes could be in order for the world’s best striker David Villa, David Silva, Carlos Marchena, Raul Albiol and Juan Mata.

In short, tomorrow would be a definitive closing of an era in Valencia CF history.

But we’ll see. We’ll know more about that in the coming weeks. Let’s not worry about saying goodbye to Villa and Silva just yet.

For now, it’s a point we need against Athletic Bilbao, who last played at the Mestalla against the world’s best football club, FC Barcelona and were trounced 4-1.

A point would be a sick kind of validation for this season. Last year, we sneaked into the UEFA Cup because we won the Copa Del Rey.

At least this time around, we’ll have qualified the old fashioned way. Still, my belly hurts thinking about the way this season’s ending.

Ruben Baraja will miss out on the last game of the season through injury after he picked up a muscle strain. So no good byes for him if it’s his last match with us. Seems kind of unfair.

Manuel Fernandes, David Silva and Asier del Horno are also out of action with knocks while Mata is suspended and Vicente Guaita and Tiago Carleto are omitted. Hugo Viana is auditioning at Manolo’s.

Bilbao have dipped in form since their final loss, losing 4-1 last weekend to Atletico Madrid and 1-0 the week before to Espanyol.

So let’s hope they’re not energized for their final match of the season. They’re safe, tucked away in mid table. So they’ve nothing but pride to play for.

Prediction?

Valencia maybe inconsistent, but Athletic’s form has gone completely wayward since they lost the Copa del Rey final and there is no reason to see them suddenly picking up when the players are all going on holiday on Monday.

Valencia 3 – 0 Athletic Bilbao

Let’s hope goal.com is right.

Yesterday, coach Unai Emery said the team needs to fight for that last point …

“The first objective was to be in the top four but after that we have to play in a European competition like the new UEFA one[Europa League]. For us, the season finishes tomorrow and the team has a responsibility to play to their best and to finish in Europe. Playing at home we have to give our best to win and so that the fans, after a difficult game last week, will be with us again,” the official club website quoted him as saying.

“The objective continues to be very important as it is the place for Europe and even though it looks as though we will make it, we have to approach it with a high level and with respect to Athletic. It will be fully competitive.”

Emery also used the final pre-match conference of the season to thank the fans for their support during the season.

“The fans have been very good. We are obliged to do well for them. We all feel sad not to be in the Champions League but we can still be in Europe,” he said.

“The fans have a right to show their annoyance and they have a few times, but tomorrow we ask for their support, knowing they could be disappointed. Then perhaps, when the game is finished and the team has given their all, they can show their frustration.”

With regards to why they have not reached the top four, Emery acknowledged that they have not been great away from home.

“Sports wise we have not been good away, we have not had the same identity we have shown at home. We have been better at the Mestalla. The fans have seen us win and they have enjoyed it, but the battle has been lost away. We have still fought for our goal until day 37,” he concluded.

I’m with you, lads. Always and forever.

Do us proud today at the Mestalla.

A day of goodbyes. Let’s hope it’s a goodbye to some and not to others.

We’ll see …

Ac Milan who struggled to get past Portsmouth? Probably best not to compare your side to theirs. Unless you feel like being cruel.

    Tim,
of course I’m disappointed for not qualifying to CL, but I’m realistic at the same time. We were without Silva, Fernandes and some other players at key games late this season.
The thing with Valencia that makes me super-confident (for future) all the time is that our financial woes can be fixed when we sell Mestala and finish Nou Metalla. The other thing is unprecedented loyalty of our Davids. We’ll be back at the top in no time, THAT’ what I believe in!!
    Therefore, AMUUUUUNT!!

Lillo: Milan is the most successfull European team of the past 20 years, 5 CL titles, countless other silverware. I’m not being cruel.

I agree that we had the CL in our hands and didn’t snatch it.
I don’t agree that wanting your team to be in the CL every year is bad. I think it’s ambitious! I don’t want to support Chelsea, etc. I want to see Valencia get there and do well.
The Europa League? Ahh … it’s what it is and I’m happy if Valencia get in there and do well. I’ll support them even if they fuck it up tomorrow and go without Europe next season.
But fuck, we should want the club to do the best they can do. And remember, the CL was a stated Valencia goal. And they didn’t reach it …
Happy with what we have. But yes, I want Valencia to get more. I’m shameless in that. Doesn’t mean I want to support a Big 4 team, etc. Just that I want to see Valencia in that company. It looks like that’s not happening any time soon. So be it. I’m not going anywhere.

    @ Lillo.

Barca lost to last place Numancia the first game of the year. You gonna say Barca is rubbish? There is this thing in sports called “upsets”. Also, Milan ALMOST lost to Pompey. Milan did win. My point is, some people here sound like spoiled Man U fans, something you know a lot about :p

BTW. I could care less what any other team does. Barca, Madrid, Depor, all the teams ahead of us and below us. I really just care about what we do and we had our destiny in our hands and blew it …

    @ Cesar.

Newcastle fans think they should be top 4 every year. Fans expectations are almost always unrealistic.

But yes, people at Valencia did say it was CL or bust. I want to be in CL also, but perhaps it is better we don’t get it this year. We can get rid of our crap players, bring in a few new people, they will get to play together all year, we get 4th, and CL next year with a team that has played together for a year. If we made the CL this year, we would have been lucky to get out of the group stage. We couldn’t beat Dynamo Kyiv, who couldn’t get out of the group stage…

That’s true … we may have been embarrassed in the group stages … it all happens for a reason. If we drop some dead weight, make smart (free) transfers and adopt a responsible economic development plan, we’ll be fine in a few seasons. This may be the best thing that could have happened. We’ll see.

    Re : kyle

Its one thing to lose a league match where teams know your game well, another to lose to a perceived much weaker side in european competition. The point is that you should be striving to be a lot better than AC Milan are right now. Maybe not top of the league or automatic qualification for the champions league, but not an over-aged, under performing ex-footballing giant either. They may be 3rd in Serie A, but that says a lot about the quality of that league these days. I’d back you to beat them every time at the moment. And thats why they are likely to let Kaka join Madrid this summer and try and rebuild their squad.
And Quin, he was saying that the Europa league is fine because this season Milan were one of the sides in it. I know Milan are full of players 30 and over, but even they dont still have the same players they had winning european cups 10-20 years ago. At least, not anymore. Byebye Maldini.
The main reason Valencia fans were sayng it was CL or bust this season is because they wanted to keep their top stars and didnt want to see the club fall apart due to its financial situation, something a champions league place and next season’s champions league run would have eased by a large margin. Its not so much the competition you are now likely to be in, but how much worse off the club is likely to be by the end of the summer because you didnt make the champions league. It was a significant sum of money that would have helped you out a lot.

@Quin, I agree with you, we had a lot of bad luck with injuries, money, etc. I’m confident we’ll be back. But as Lillo said, we definitely could’ve used that money. Oh well, we’ll be better than ever next season. And if not, I’ll still be getting drunk at Manolo’s when I can – hopefully with Angulo, who I will most certainly punch in the face for numerous reasons. Anyone up for a live chat? Last match of the season, Valencianistas!!!

@Amir, I, along with maybe Cesar – c’mon, dude! – might also be going to Val this September to see a match. Also, I was just there in April and stayed at pretty much the best hotel in Valencia for $90 a night, which was split two ways between my buddy and I. I dunno if they have the same deal right now, but it’s worth it. It’s in a nice part of the city – 10 min walk to Mestalla, 10 min walk to the city center. Check out hotels.com and look for the Hospes Palau de la Mar.

    @ Timothy
You said if u are not disappointed, it might be so u don’t love the club. To be honest, i am not disappointed actually… Of course, i wished our team would gain everything and get back into Europe’s elite competition but we didn’t deserve it and we didn’t fight hard enough for it. But still, i am not sad with Valencia. Valencia ia a club which has its ups and down and always the turmoil and problems within the club.

We will never be a Barca or a ManU and im glad we won’t, but i just want out club to be healthy and stabel, with no internal wars and no stupid management. And if we should win something with that, its all a surplus to loving this great club, but if they don’t win, im just as happy to be a Valencianista. The only thing i ask is our club sorting their things out and giving their all on the pitch. And sometimes, just rarely, we have a quiet time and a perfect match where we play like gods, and that makes it all worth while!!

@JW, I didn’t mean it like that, son. But I’m confused. You’re happy that we didn’t make CL? I’m not cutting myself over it, but I’m still a little disappointed. That said, I’ll be a Valencianista hasta muerte, and not making CL hasn’t changed that.

Nah mate im just not sad about it, cant explain why… Its so normal now that Valencia is just so inconsistent, last year when i lived there i saw Valencia get totally trashed and it really changed a lot. If u see Madrid beating us 5-1, Barca 0-3, Mallorca 0-3, Villarreal 0-3, u dont really worry about CL that much, cause u kinda know, we are just not always that good. And i accept that, every success we get i enjoy, but i can almost never be disappointed anymore cause ive felt way worse before…

    @Kyle…
No Spanish team (Even the big 2) is assured of a Champions league spot.
I remember Real finishing 5th and Zaragoza pushed to the UEFA cup for Real to ‘defend their title’.
Same happened earlier this decade…Barcelona missed out on the Champions league.
Truth is…The Spanish Liga is more competitive.
The Top 4 spots are highly contested and you also need to see the scramble at the bottom(8 teams battling relegation is rare in the EPL).
