5 Steps to Rebuild Valencia CF

By: Cesar | February 27th, 2009

I didn’t watch yesterday’s crushing 2-2 tie with Dynamo Kiev at the Mestalla yesterday which eliminated us from Europe this season.

So I can’t comment on specifics regarding game play. But from what I’ve read, it sounds like a typical 2008-09 Valencia match: We score first, we run ourselves ragged chasing the opposition, our porous defense lets in a goal, we manage an equalizer and then the bottom falls out when the opposition scores again (and again) to render us helpless.

So what’s the problem here? We’ve hypothesized over and over again on what it could be: fitness, lack of execution, bad coaching, the financial situation.

Who knows at this point? What matters is that we’re out of Europe. We’re not winning any silverware this season.

So now the objective becomes simple. Finish in the top 4.

That’s it. Anything else would be a disappointment of the highest order.

We’re 5th, two points behind 4th place Villarreal. We’ve 14 matches left to make the Champions League next season.

Now more than ever, the club needs our support. Now, we need to be fans and cheer the club on as they battle through these 14 games on the way to next season’s Champions League.

Today, Juan Mata talked about the need to re-focus and finish in the Top 4.

“The main objective at the start of the season was to finish in the top four and now we can fight to do that,” he declared.

“There are many points left to play for and, of the past 24 weeks, we’ve been in the Champions League places for 23 of them. We feel bad after the UEFA Cup because we believed that we could qualify. We know what has happened and all we can do now is focus on the present and do our best to finish in the top four.”

Coach Unai Emery and his staff had a long talk with the squad before training this morning regarding the situation and Mata revealed that it was to try and build some confidence.

“That type of chat is to try and get the positive points out and to try and give us some confidence,” he explained. “The good thing is that from now on we can focus on the league and we [will] have whole weeks to prepare for our matches. With the negative results we have had, confidence has been lost, but we are recovering it and good results help.”

I’m sure the poor run of results coupled with the financial situation has caused the players and coaching staff a ton of stress.

Hopefully some of that will be alleviated in the near future, as Vicente Soriano today announced a deal with Mediapro for TV rights until 2014 that’ll inject the club with some much needed cash.

It’s the first step of many the club need to take towards a more viable future.

But what else can the club do to re-invigorate Valencia CF, make it a better club and challenge for titles sooner rather than later?

I offer you my 5-step Plan for Rebuilding Our Beloved …

1 – Sell one star and all the players who don’t contribute.

While controversial, I think this will improve not only our finances but our level of play in the future.
First, sell one of the Davids. Villa or Silva. If I had to pick right now, I’d say sell Silva. It’s hard to find strikers as good as Villa these days.

Next, scour the roster for dead wood. You need some examples? Here you go.
- Curro Torres (I’ll miss him, but he’s got to go.)
- Marchena (He’s a terrible defender.)
- Del Horno (’Nightclub’ Asier has been ok, but nowhere what he used to be.)
- Miguel (Cash in on the big-boned defender while we can.)
- Edu (’Porcelain’ needs to head back to the china shop.)
- Albelda (Thanks for the memories.)
- Baraja (See Albelda.)
- Hugo Viana (Who?)
- Angulo (This makes Timothy Lakefront happy.)
- Morientes (Please come to MLS and the NY Red Bulls!)

Ok, that leaves us short some players. So let’s bring back some of our loaned-out players like Sunny, Zigic, Aaron and Ever Banega. Let’s use the money from the sale of the players above to buy smart, fast, aggressive players. To buy cheap talent that wants to play for the ‘3rd Biggest Club in Spain,’ that wants an opportunity to showcase their talent with a top club.

Basically, let’s invest in good, cheap talent. Here’s our chance to really remake the squad with hungry players.

2 – Sell the Mestalla

Who’s the mystery buyer? Me? You? Manolo? Who knows … whoever it is/was, wave bye bye and try to find another buyer soon. I know the market is bare, but let’s try and get something for the land. This will inject us with some quick cash that can be used on the squad and help finance the New Mestalla.

3 – Keep Emery

I know many think Unai isn’t the right man for the job. But I ask, who is the right man?
He’s done an adequate job with what he’s inherited. I think in time, we’ll see that Unai’s sensibilities will prove right and he’ll show he’s cut up to the task. I don’t think we’re saddled with another QQ Sanchez Flores here. I think we have an actual manager who not only cares about the players, but has a footballing acumen that hasn’t been tapped to capacity. Give him time, lads. He’s going to be a special one.

4 – BUY DEFENDERS!

Remember what I said before about buying good players? BUY SOME GOOD DEFENDERS!!!!
Do I really need to say more about this??

5 – Make the Mestalla intimidating again

Mestalla used to be a cauldron of activity, abuzz with noise. I’ll never forget my first game, against Real Madrid in the opening game of the 2001 season. The energy was intoxicating. The noise was deafening. The crowd gave me goosebumps and it’s a feeling I’ve yet to replicate in American sports.

But lately, the crowd’s become complacent. The same energy is lacking. People have grown cynical with the team. They don’t come to games, they jeer just about every other minute and voice their displeasure more than cheer on their team.

That has to change. The Marketing department of Our Beloved need to find a way to get the fans back into the stadium and care about this team. How?

Unique promotions. Cheap tickets. Giveaways. Anything! This stadium needs to be intimidating to the opposition, like it used to be. It has to be home. And it has to be a place we want to go to week in and week out. Valencia CF have to figure out how to make this happen.

Oh … one more …

6 – Give the US lads a penya!!!

New York Che!!! Think of the marketing opportunities!
I say this selfishly, of course. I’ve wanted to start a supporter’s club in the States since 2001 with little support from the club.

There is one penya here in the States, based in Miami. My overtures to them have also turned out futile. Is it me? Do I smell? Who ever has met me in person, please don’t answer that …

But really, I think it’d be great for the club and for us. We’d have a direct pipeline to the club. The club would be able to offer us stuff, talk to us, try things out with us and maybe stage a friendly in the States in the near future.

It’s just a thought. But it’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time now.

So that’s it. My 5+1 plan to get Valencia back on track. Your suggestions?

@ Alex : Dag is still playing with the B team (im not sure if he even started there yet).

And as for Emery and what he could do…well even us amateurs here can see that his defensive tactics are all wrong. As a coach of the supposedly 3rd biggest team in Spain and someone that has some education in defensive tactics he should have fixed the problem. Our backline plays too far up the field and they have never played the offside trap well in a very long time.

Under Flores (and I am not a big fan of him but he was better in tactics than Emery), our defenders (and it was sometimes Marchena, Miguel, Albiol and Moretti) played a perfect offside trap…Emery is telling them to play upfront and it is suicidal to do that with how slow our CBs are. Its been 3 months and every single coach in la liga has figured out our weakness and are using it against us but Emery doesnt seem to see the problem. Im not quite sure how talented Emery is (he’s still young and did wonders with Almeria), but I think he needed another year with Almeria in top flight football to be ready for a bigger team.

Let us not forget that Almeria last year had a terrible defensive record….and when Emery came he stated that he likes to win matches by scoring a lot of goals and doesnt mind conceding a few goals every match. A coach that brings trophies would never say that.

Remember what Benitez and Cuper did? They first fixed our goalkeeping problems, then the defence…then they worked on the rest of the team. Benitez had a much weaker team to work with (imagine having Mista as your best striker and Curro Torres as your best right back with Angulo as your right winger). Look at the team Emery has now its miles better than the one Benitez had. Trust me if Benitez was coaching us now we’d be 2nd and competing for the league. Emery has no excuse for not getting us into the CL next year, and if he doesnt then its his lack of coaching skills and nothing else, he has the players. Moretti, Miguel, Alexis, Albiol and Marchena are all pretty good if coached properly by a defensively sound coach.

Also, I was looking at our lineups for each game this year (i’m a nerd I know) and I noticed that we have only really started playing 4-2-3-1 consistently since December/January. Before that we either played 4-4-2 (I was shocked to see how much Moro has played this year) or 4-3-3. When Baraja, Albelda, and Fernandes were all healthy we played 4-3-3. During the part of the season when Baraja was out injured we played 4-4-2.

I also noticed that during our best part of the year 1) Marchena wasn’t playing (he sucks obviusly) and 2) Baraja wasn’t playing. Emery was using Albelda and Fernandes in CM during 4-4-2. Could ALBEDLA be the key to success!?!?!?!?!?

Also Miguel was fit so that probably helped, but I am really getting tired of his constant bombing forward. Sometimes I can’t tell who the midfielder is, Joaquin or Miguel?

I would like to see this v Valladolid:

    ———————Cesar

    Miguel/Maduro—Alexis–Albiol—-Moretti/Del Horno

    ———————Albelda
    —————-Baraja—–Fernandes

    ———Joaquin——————–Silva

    ———————Villa

Miguel over Maduro if healthy, and Horny has been decent recently, him or Moretti. Maybe go with Del Horno, build his confidence. Imagine if he plays like old Del Horno!

And seriously NO MARCHENA IN MIDFIELD! The guy can’t pass the ball more than 5 meters. Marchena can ride the bench.

Yevy brings up a good point. I wonder if players like Marchena are too big for Emery in the dressing room. I can’t think of any reason why he would be playing every match.

Kyle, you’ve left out Mata and Vicente, two very important players in my opinion. Sure, they might not have been great in the last few weeks, but then, who has? We’ve tried playing Albelda and Baraja together in midfield before and it has failed spectacularly.

We played our best this year with Baraja, Albelda, AND Fernandes in midfield. If you don’t believe me go here http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team/results?id=94&season=2008&_league=esp.1&cc=5901 and look at every lineup for every game. We played our best playing 4-3-3 and 4-4-2. We have played 4-2-3-1 the last few months. How has that worked? 2 wins 3 draws 3 loses in 2009 playind 4-2-3-1. I belive when we played 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 the first 2 or 3 months we were top of the league. Correct? We have to change something.

Besides, I left out Mata and Vicente? With Silva in my lineup? Name the last time all 3 of them started in the same match?

Kyle: You have a good point. But, Baraja isn’t the type of guy who can run all over the places. So, if Banega or Sunny could fill his role, then it would be nice.

Cesar: you’re critics and solutions are precise. These solutions are exactly what I’ve been dreaming of for the club. But, to start building a new club, we need MONEY! Selling the davids or one of them should certainly get us back on track. Then again, there wolud be another solution; the club being sold to an arabic business man that has a lot of money. Then, we would definitely get back o tracks. Then, about Marchena, as much as I hate him, it would be preferable to keep him. The club doesn’t have enough depth to replace him. However, we could recycle him. Instead he plays in the central parks, he could play as a defensive midfielder. Like that, we could get rid of either Albelda or Baraja and get even more money. But, more importantly, Valencia should recall they loanees, and start developping them so that they can create a new and hungry squad. They really need it. Barcelona changed, Real Madrid changed, why not Valencia? Time’s up! Valencia needs a harsh wake up slap.

Emery is a great tactician. He needs to build his confidence and to stop thinking like a mid table coach. He must tell himself: Valencia is the THIRD biggest club in Spain. So, either we win la ligua or we finish second. Teams need to start fearing Valencia. Valencia needs to rebirth from his long slip in the shadows.

@ adimante. It doesn’t matter if Valencia wants a rich Arab to buy them. There actually has to be a rich Arab willing to take on 400 million euros of debt, and pay for the squad, and pay interest on loans for construction of Nou Mestalla, etc. It’s not like putting an add in the paper.

No, Baraja can’t run all over the place, but I never said he should. I can’t wait to get Sunny, Banega, and HOPEFULLY Zigic back from loan next year.

    HI guys

well, i think that we can easily finish at the top 4. it’s just that Emery doesn’t know how to defend. well all saw that valencia teams in the past have one common thing, high pressure on the team. we don’t let them be comfortable with the ball. we play good when we have the ball, but tactics without the ball are totally shit. we see the players just hovering in their places, not pressuring on the other team, it’s like they’re satisfied with keeping the ball away from the goal, not wanting to take it, and usually when someone leaves his position, we don’t see another player covering his place, just like Manuel and Albiol in the last game. when they leave their place to go with the attack, Marchena doesn’t do the job. and as Fayez said, Defense is so upfront! they play near the center circle, which means any fast player will kill us easily. i think Emery is trying to keep the lines connected with his attacking mentality, but it’s not working here because our defenders are slow.

Hi, Whats up? The posts have gone mad on throwing half the team away and looking for replacements. Right, I would like Kanoute and Ribery to strengthen our attack.
None of this or what you are dreaming about is going to happen. There will be no transfer slots till June anyway, we have 14 matches still left so lets concentrate on that.
WE HAVE GOOD ENOUGH PLAYERS, they have got to be motivated and used right thats all. If we want to do selling then OK lets weed out the players we do not use
like Curro and Viana for a start. What is the point of carting them round as a sub ?? They havent played a liga match yet !! Someone mentioned Sunny if we dont want him then SELL. So far he has only played 41 mins of football this season, what is the good of that, he would have got fulltime football in our second team. MIKU is saleable or usable. He is a forward, 23years old In 2006 he scored the winning goal for Salamanca to take them from 2nd b to 2nd Div. Slamanca wanted him back this year and he has scored 8 goals and Salamanca are in7th, only 3 points below the 3rd ascending spot, So MIKU may make 1st div yet. Then he would be even more saleable.David Navarro still on loan WHY!!! We have lots of guys like this we should work on selling the lot if we have no interest and that will give us the spending money without breaking up what we have. This is surely economic sense. I do not see the point of selling any good player in the hope of buying someone better, with no money it is a quick way down hill.Use what assets you have this is no time for speculation with our financial sate…..Almendras

Personally i thinkEmery has done great, he has had basically the same squad as last year aka a relegation bound 10th place squad and he has turned it almost intoa top 4 team, give him some credit, no finances,no stability, no NOTHING lol i have 100% faith in him

As for selling Marchena and Albiol, what are we waiting for?!?!?! Albiol is our highest scoring defender with 4 goals (2 for us and two against us). Albiol will probably be as good as Helguera one day.

@ Amir. Yes Villa is suspended.

Andrei Voronin is okay. He played for Bayer Leverkusen 04-07, with 32 goals in 92 matches. Then he went to Liverpool and din’t do much, 5 goals in 19 matches in 07-08. They sent him on loan to Hertha Berlin this year and he has 14 goals in 24 matches. He is very fast, but his fininshing is not the best. He i an Unkraine international.

If we get another striker, I would get… Zigic. He is free! Puls Voronin is similar to Villa. We need at least 1 big striker who can head the ball, cause Morientes is leaving.

We have no money. No transfers that cost more than probably 2 or 3 million will come in, if that. We signed Dealbert from Castelleon in January, but we are so poor, we are waiting for him to come in the summer. We couldn’t get the money to buy a 2nd division defender! If we can’t buy a player of that quality, then no way is a player of Toure or Gallas quality coming. Seriously, we all need to stop think about new players. We would have got some in January if we could have.
