2nd Annual Let’s Get to Know One Another

By: Cesar | January 1st, 2009

Happy 2009!

So raise your hands … how many of you are nursing hangovers?

I’m doing ok … didn’t overdo it and rang in the New Year in style. But now that the revelry has passed, it’s time to get back to the nitty gritty: mainly, my La Liga withdrawal.

When are they going to start playing games again?!? This is annoying, isn’t it? It feels like it’s been more than two weeks since I’ve seen Our Beloved grace a television screen and cause anxiety and frustration in my gut.

But no worries, as Valencia CF are back in action this Saturday evening (depending where you are) against Atletico Madrid at the Mestalla.

It’s a barn-burner of a game, a steel cage match between two heavyweights of the Spanish First Division. More on this at a later date …

For now, I’d like to reintroduce one of my favorite Valencia Offside blog posts … the ‘Lets Get to Know One Another’ post …

We’ve grown into quite a healthy Valencia CF community since I started writing the blog in March 2007. Many readers don’t know one another, so how about we introduce ourselves?

I’ll start. You follow. Deal?

Ok, I’m Cesar, from New York, NY …

1.) Why are you a Valencia fan? – I fell in love with the club when I lived there many years ago. How could you not? The city’s gorgeous, the weather is perfect and the football club is wicked … my heart was stolen …

2.) One match in the history of Valencia you wish you had attended? – The league clinching game against Malaga May 5, 2002. Oh, how I wish …

3.) One scoreline you wish you could reverse for Valencia? – 3-2 Barcelona, last game of the season in 2001.

4.) Five favorite players for Valencia, past or present? – Pablo Aimar, Claudio Lopez, Canizares, Ayala, David Villa.

5.) Five favorite players to have never played for Valencia, past or present? – Fat Ronaldo, Messi, Zidane, Iker Casillas, Ronaldhino

6.) All time favorite Valencia moment – Winning the 2nd La Liga championship in 2004. Totally unexpected.

7.) David Villa or Mario Kempes? – I really haven’t seen Kempes play much. So I’d go with El Guaje.

8.) Koeman or Soler? – Can I say neither?

9.) Least favorite player of all time, past or present? – Gonzalo De Los Santos, because he sucked.

10.) Do you have a second club? – Yes. But honestly, I fancy players more than other clubs …

11.) One player right now you would add to Valencia? – Deco. I hate the guy but he’s a winner.

12.) One football dream you wish to see in your lifetime? – Easy. Valencia winning the Champions League …

13.) Most prized football possession? – Poster from the 2001 Champions League final. Oh … and Superdeporte issues from the run to the 2002 title … Oh!! … and posters from the 1982 Spain World Cup … beautiful artwork.
I own about 30 Valencia kits as well …

14.) Who is the best player in the world right now? – I’d have to say it’s Lionel Messi.

15.) Prediction for 2009? – Valencia finish third and qualify for the Champions League. We keep Silva and Villa, buy some scrap parts and are doing quite well in the league when 2009 comes to a close …

16.) Favorite team/sport besides Valencia CF and football? – I love baseball (Yankees fan) but my favorite team besides Valencia CF is the New York Jets. So I know all about suffering and sports misery …

Ok, your turn!

I just saw that Zigic scored in his first match back with Racing. Wish we still has him on our squad.

    7) Maravilla!
    8)Koeman i guess?
    9)Least fv player: Arizmendied
    10)2nd club: Liverpool, El Nino
11)one player to add: Mascherano from liver we need help for our backline.
    12)wish; champs league winners.
13)Fav item: euro 2008 Villa Espana jersey
    14)best plyr: Messi
15)Finish top 4 keep villa and Silva get out of fin difficulties.

@ Shaun : Ive just looked at the goal.com ratings…Forlan and Aguero got a 6.5, what did they get that score for ? Just showing up to the match?? Villa got the same score they did.

    Goal.com are really anti-Valencia.

I keep wondering why they always quote Atletico as “the number three team in Spain”. What do they base that on? Its definitely not on European success or number of supporters. Maybe league titles.

Zigic scored the only goal for Racing today against Valladolid in his first match.

Why did we let him go when we have no real backup for Villa (apart from an aging Morientes) ?

Yes, Sevilla’s draw to Osasuna made it a great start to 2009 for our beloved team.

On another note, does anyone know when Alexis is going to be back? I searched news articles and found two versions – one said he’s out for 2 months and another for 4 months. By the way, operation was done in early Dec.

I know this is REALLY late. But here are my ‘Lets Get to Know One Another’ points :

    1) Why are you a Valencia fan? – I started watching Spanish football in the late 1990s. The thing that drew me to Valencia was the passion and dedication of the players and fans. They have a unique feel to them, unlike the mobs of Barca and Real.

    2) One match in the history of Valencia you wish you had attended ? – That game against Malaga in 2002. Really broke my heart.

    3) One scoreline you wish you could reverse for Valencia? – CL final against Bayern. We lost unfairly.

    4) Five favorite players for Valencia, past or present? – Kempes, Aimar, Villa, Canizaries, Kily.

    5) Five favorite players to have never played for Valencia, past or present? – Maradona, Zidane, Ronaldo (not the arrogant one), Del Piero, Batistuta.

    6) All time favorite Valencia moment – Sacking Koeman, he was a nightmare.

    7) David Villa or Mario Kempes? – Probably Kempes is better. That guy was a goal machine.

    8) Koeman or Soler? – Koeman. I just feel he would make a great drinking buddy. The guy would make a great cartoon character.

9)Least favorite player of all time, past or present? – Corradi. I have no idea why people call him a striker as he barely scores any goals.

10)Do you have a second club? – That would be Juventus.

11)One player right now you would add to Valencia? – Asenjo!! He would definitely take Casillas place if he continues at the rate he is developing.

12)One football dream you wish to see in your lifetime? – Real and Barca get relegated.

13)Most prized football possession? – A football with all the signatures of our team in 2004. There is no way im selling that.

14)Who is the best player in the world right now? – Messi, no doubt about that.

    15) Prediction for 2009? – Valencia probably 4th (although I hope for 2nd!!). I see Villa and Silva in Valencia for many years to come. I think we will not make it far in the Copa Del Rey (semi-final) and the UEFA (probably quarterfinal).
    12)

Im sure you would want to hear about this. Gulliem Balague predicts (right before the Atletico match) that Valencia would end up 7th in la liga, or 6th if we are lucky enough.

Well that was fun to watch. I was in Valencia at the time of the game, watching it on tv (sorry… i was broke!) and it was POURING outside at the beginning of the match. Spaniards don´t like to get wet, I guess (and women just don´t go to games! cymbal crash!). Anyway, we looked amazing, commentators said a few things about it too. With Silva on that left side we truly can play with any team in Europe, he was amazing. Mata > Vicente any day of the week. We need to sign a lockdown defender, and that´s about it (speaknig about defenders, I love our little portuguese Miguel, a great attacker and defending well at the moment). I live in Palma and will be at the game against Mallorca in a few weeks if anyone´s in town!! Cheers!

I’m late to the party, but here goes:

1.) Why are you a Valencia fan? – It all started that day I was rummaging through my Dad’s footie memorabilia and found an old and tattered VCF patch. I was unfamiliar with the club and I was curious about it. Eventually, I fell in love with it and that’s how it’s been all these years. Plus, deep down inside, I love the emotional rollercoaster ride I go through supporting Valencia…

2.) One match in the history of Valencia you wish you had attended? – Just ONE match? Hmmm… Of course it’ll be that game against Málaga in 2002. I would have killed to be there.

3.) One scoreline you wish you could reverse for Valencia? – Hmmm… I don’t know… I’ve got to think about this for a bit.

4.) Five favorite players for Valencia, past or present? – Santiago Cañizares, Roberto Ayala, Gaizka Mendieta, David Silva, David Villa.

5.) Five favorite players to have never played for Valencia, past or present? – Just five? This is going to be tough… Bixente Lizarazu, Julen Guerrero, Xavi, Carles Puyol, Iker Casillas.

6.) All time favorite Valencia moment – There’s so many but winning the Liga in 2004 was fantastic.

7.) David Villa or Mario Kempes? – I would chose Villa, but I’m sure he can still do so much better.

8.) Koeman or Soler? – Hmph. I’d say ¡vete a la mierda! to both.

9.) Least favorite player of all time, past or present? – Maduro… I really just don’t like him. It doesn’t help that he’s not really that good of a player.

10.) Do you have a second club? – Yes and a third as well: After Valencia, I support Athletic Bilbao and then Barça.

11.) One player right now you would add to Valencia? – Puyi… This obviously has no chance of ever happening but one can dream, right?

12.) One football dream you wish to see in your lifetime? – In regards to Valencia, I want the treble. Maybe we can have this in 2009-10?

13.) Most prized football possession? – A tie between my black away kit (without that tacky Unibet logo) and my Dad’s old VCF patch from the 40s.

14.) Who is the best player in the world right now? – I’ll go with Xavi.

15.) Prediction for 2009? – I’m not quite sure if Valencia will finish 2nd or 3rd but I’m sure we’ll get into the Champs League. Beyond that, anything can happen.

16.) Favorite team/sport besides Valencia CF and football? – TEAMS: Athletic Bilbao, Barça, Juve, Liverpool, and Ajax. SPORTS: (mostly to play since I only watch football) Badminton, Pelota, Flag football, and a bit of Cricket.

    Úlfur from Reykjavík, Iceland…

1.) Why are you a Valencia fan? I went as an exchange student to Valencia in 2007 and fell in love with the city and the team.

2.) One match in the history of Valencia you wish you had attended? I think I have to say our last game against Atlético Madrid.

3.) One scoreline you wish you could reverse for Valencia? The Champions League final against Real Madrid.

4.) Five favorite players for Valencia, past or present? David Villa, David Silva, Joaquín, Pablo Aimar & Cañizares.

5.) Five favorite players to have never played for Valencia, past or present? Diego Maradona, Ruud Gullit, Roger Milla, Fernando Torres & Rúnar Kristinsson.

6.) All time favorite Valencia moment? Coming soon.

7.) David Villa or Mario Kempes? El Guaje.

    8.) Koeman or Soler? Er…

9.) Least favorite player of all time, past or present? Samuel Eto’o. His attitude just gets on my nerves.

10.) Do you have a second club? – Yes. Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur (Reykjavik F.C.). That’s my local club in Iceland where I coach our future talents.

11.) One player right now you would add to Valencia? Lionel Messi or Kun Agüero.

12.) One football dream you wish to see in your lifetime? Valencia winning the Champions League or my local team in Iceland qualifying for the Champions League.

13.) Most prized football possession? Probably my Valencia kit.

14.) Who is the best player in the world right now? Can I say in a few years? David Silva.

15.) Prediction for 2009? Valencia will finish in second place if Barça keep playing this well. We will play well with the return of David Silva and the coming of Thiego Carleto.

16.) Favorite team/sport besides Valencia CF and football? My favorite sport besides football is boxing. My favorite boxers are Naseem Hamed, Ricardo Mayorga and Oscar de la Hoya.
