2 From 2 and top of La Liga

By: dan_c | September 11th, 2011

Firstly, humblest apologies on the scarcity. Exams have been ruining my life for the last two weeks and are set to ruin them for a week more, but then freedom beckons.

Which means of course, that this post is going to be shorter than aaron lennon because the books are calling.

As the title says, a win is a win. Simple as that. We resembled a bunch of mothers with broken waters by the time the final whistle blew. We huffed and we puffed, and we just about blew atleti’s house down.

In terms of what I was hoping for, a win and a clean sheet, missions accomplished. The manner of the win wasn’t stellar, but that’s two from two and no complaints. Last night also revealed more of Emery’s thinking and I have to say that I liked Ruiz.

Jonas again proved why for me he should be a definite starter. After driving our revival from the bench against Racing 2 weeks ago he provided spark and a distraction for the Atleti backline to deal with, which helped Soldado’s cause.

And then there’s San Sol. I’m running out of adjectives to describe him, I really am. He stated post-match that he wanted to cement a regular spot in the Spanish national side, and its a testament to the strength of La Furia Roja and the strength in depth of Spanish football as a whole that he isn’t a regular. With Villa aging and Torres looking positively avatar-like with his goal-scoring blues and in his chelsea shirt (thats still only 1 goal in 7 months for the El Nino) it won’t be long I feel.

One other thing still is the disappointment I see in the fact that Atleti and Los Che, two huge clubs in spain (about as big as it gets outside of bernabeu and camp nou) stil cant find themselves a decent main shirt sponsor.

If you missed the game, there are some great highlights packages available on youtube.

Including this one.

Against lesser teams at home id love to see Adruiz and Soldado start, with Pablo and Piatti on the wings.

Also, one thing I liked about Emery yesterday is changing Piatti for Alba. Piatti was suffering when he defended yesterday and I think Manzano read that which is why he concentrated on attacking from their right side in the second half.

atleti actually got 10 mil from KIA but the players used the cars to training so they will never get that much in a long time. valencia could get 4 mil today but i think llorente is waiting for a larger offer then unibets.
i think if kia payed us 10 mil llorente would have forced everyone to drive it to training wich is how it must be.
i loved the game until we scored, but as feyez pointed out weve been missing paco bayesteran(spelling) for the last 25 minutes of the game.

Topal should have come on for Albelda, not Tino, this way we handed Atleti the midfield.
Seems like Emery is beginning to think defensively at last, but he made those midfield subs far too early (55th min.)

Re Torres: he is going to be ahead of Soldado as long as Del Bosque is national coach, simple as that. As much as I’d like to believe that SOME coaches are intelligent (I liked what Del Bosque did at Real) they prove me wrong every time. Money speaks here. Torres’ transfer to Chelsea was 58M, we got Soldado for 10M. It’s that simple (and disappointing).

Well my view fromt hat stands was that it was two fairly level teams grinding it out. Valencia slightly with the advantage and more chances.

That said both these teams are full of new recruits trying to become a soldi squad.. valencia’s is just a bit more solid rigth now.. but keep an eye out for Falcao he is going to be a real threat.

Our attack is decent.. i like that Soldado is on fire right now.. Piatti has some really great moments but he loses the ball to easily.

The thing i took away last night was teh vast improvement of our defence. Miguel is truly essencial.. Bruno is no Miguel

Ruiz played an excellent game as more than anything i saw him directing traffic which is what the team needs.

Mathieu Ruiz Rami Miguel Those 4 should be our starting 4.

In other news my son Paris was shown at half time.. clearly being scouted early for the cantera.

Not to sure about Ruiz. We tend to glorify our new players every year especially the new defenders. I can remember you guys writing about how great Dealbert and R. Costa were when they joined us. What I saw from Ruiz during the match was that his positioning was often off, also he will have problems against quick strikers and strikers who like to make runs behind defenders as opposed to facing them with their backs. He also completely missed the ball on 2-3 occasions when clearing. On a positive note, the boy looks rock solid i mean physically he’s as strong as they come but he doesn’t know how to use that 100%. He was muscled out by Falcao one time and Falcao isn’t exactly Drogba, Dzeko etc. The most I was impressed was his precision passing. That’s something we where missing a lot this past years. A defender who is able to pass the ball across the midfield and even to our strikers and he even does this with style. So hope he’ll learn a thing or two from Rami who is a true world class defender and player. Though all said he is our second best defender and I do have high hopes for the boy.

On a side note there is something weird about him, he has that Riquelme sadness in him. After he makes a tackle or especially after he passes the ball he bows his head down and walks slowly like he’s saying to himself “What the meaning of all life?” Anyone else noticed that? :)
