111

By: Cesar | September 22nd, 2008

See the title of this post?

111.

Any guess as to what that means?

No, it’s not my monthly salary. Or the amount of money in my savings account (I have less).

It’s how many fixtures have been played since we last topped the Spanish league table.

111. 111!!! One hundred eleven …

For a team like Valencia, that’s inexcusable.

Let’s travel back in time, shall we?

The date was September 26, 2004. Our coach? Claudio Ranieri. We just finished defeating Racing Santander in the 5th game of the season and stood top of the table with 13 points, level with Barcelona.

It’s been that long, folks.

Now, that season ended poorly for us.

We fired Claudio near the middle of the season and finished with 58 points, 7th in Spain. Not a great result.

But something about this season feels different.

While it might be ‘anecdotal’ to be in first place as Unai Emery put it during yesterday’s press conference, it does mean something to fans of the team.

I had no idea it had been this long since Valencia topped Spain. Time flies when your team stinks, eh?

111 games without leading is not important or really of any importance. Barca and Real have lead Valencia many times on goal difference alone. except for last seasons political meltdown. Valencia have always maintained their place as the third biggest club in Spain and for the most part have regularly had a hand in the title race.

I don’t think they are the 3rd team. Just my opinion.

We may not be the 3rd team historically in terms of the entire history of Spanish football, but I think we definitely are the 3rd term in the modern era (last decade or so). I also think that if we build a great team and keep Jabba the hut from screwing everything over, we can win another 4 league titles before Atletico Madrid or Bilbao win the league again, and become the 3rd best team historically as well.

Cesar I must congratulate you for keeping up the blog on a daily basis! I am just glad we are first at the moment, it would have really been difficult for you to write if we were doing terribly at the moment :)
I really hope we maintain this lead, these rather simple fixtures are good for the team to build their confidence on (they surely need it after what Koeman did last season).
As for Valencia being the 3rd biggest club in Spain, I think it is a safe bet to think of us as the 3rd biggest in terms of number of supporters.
