¡Que Horror! Aragones Back to Valencia??
By: Cesar | April 2nd, 2008
I thought this was an April Fool’s joke at first, until I saw the date was April 2nd.
I rubbed my eyes, took a swig of whiskey and attempted breathing exercises in order to calm myself down … please, please let this be a joke …
According to Goal.com, who can be pretty reliable at times, Luis Aragonés could make a sensational return as coach of Valencia in the summer …
PLEASE NO!!
As the article says, ‘The 69-year-old is due to leave his post in charge of the Spanish national team after Euro 2008 and has already stated that he is keen on a return to club football. … Aragonés would be a controversial choice among the fans, but he is straight-talking and does not put up with star names being given special treatment in a dressing room that has suffered from enlarged egos this term.
José Mourinho was said to have been approached when Quique Sánchez Flores was sacked before Christmas, but the Portuguese coach turned down the previous president, Juan Soler.’
Uggh … why bring this retread back? This attitude-filled, venom-spewing, haggard trainer?
His time here saw him finish in second place in 1995 in his first season, 4 points behind champions Atletico Madrid.
According to Wikipedia:
Luis Aragonés … took Valencia to second place in the league within 4 points of the title with a team in which Zubizarreta, Camarasa, Fernando and Mijatovic stood out. Atlético Madrid, who had hired Lubo Penev, were the champions that season along with the King’s cup to achieve the league and cup double. ‘Pedja’ Mijatovic the Valencia star at the time, signed for Real Madrid who paid the minimum release clause in his contract, which was met with resentment from the Valencia faithful.
In the summer of 96, Francisco Roig carried out his will of signing Romario. Nevertheless, the brilliant and rebellious Brazilian forward clashed with Aragonés and was sold to Flamengo. His signing coincided with the signing of the Argentinean winger Claudio López, another future idol of the Valencia supporters. The bad results obtained in the league caused the dismissal of the coach from Madrid and he was replaced by Jorge Valdano.
In some ways, Aragones’ departure was the springboard to the successes of the late-90’s and the early-’00’s. He saw the signing of Claudio Lopez and the departure of a huge ego in Romario. He also witnessed the departure of the once-beloved Mijatovic, who tore many a hole in Valencian hearts.
Once he left and once his successor Jorge Valdano was fired, the path was cleared for Italian Claudio Ranieri. The rest is history.
Still, does anyone here want to see him come back?
Really?
He’s stubborn, he’s nasty, he’s paranoid … he’s just not what this Valencia team needs right now …
Valencia need someone who will reign the team in, like a Jose Mourinho or Rafa Benitez (someone I would welcome with open arms). Or if not, a young hotshot like Espanyol’s Ernesto Valverde or Racing Santander’s Marcelino García.
But please, not this guy.
I can deal with him being national team coach, simply because I know he’s gone after Euro 2008.
But for my club? My beloved? No way.

People! what do u think of juande ramos??? hes good right? now compare Valencia to tottenham spurs! they are both 11th in both Legues! Juande brought Carling cup tp tottenham! Koeman hopefully will bring CUpa del ray cup in our cabinet!! see when you look at it this way its not soo bad! Koeman and Juande are in the same position! both are saying they will lett loose a lot of players that they were forced to have since they (coaches) were brought in the middle of the season!!
im happy now when i see it that way! see Koeman isnt so bad why doesnt tottenham talk about axing Juande ramos!??! the coach cant live under that stress! lett him do his job! give him time!!! hes not a magician! Arsenals coach dint bring a cup since 2005! why not talk about axing him! KEEP KOEMAN TO DO HIS THING AND THEN RATE HIM! 2 more years for koeman, and if he dint do well, Then id think of replacing him! neways im goin to movies noW yall take care ! Ali, when Koeman took over which position was Valencia in?
Which position was Spurs in when Ramos took over?
I rest my case.

maybe we can snag another coach from getafe again by the name of Laudrup. I would be rather happy if we could get him. especially if koeman crumbles against them in the copa final and loses the rest of the liga games

Perhaps the club should look at Thomas Schaff. Ernesto Valverde would be good. The best option however would surely be Luciano Spaletti - the board should go to Rome, camp outside his door and offer him as much money as possible.
But not Aragones - he’s done the Spanish national team a disservice with all the talent that it’s got.
Koeman should have to the end of the season to turn something round. If he does decent he should get a summer to make the team his own (but lets pray Villa doesn’t leave). If not he should go at the end of the season so the new coach has the summer to prepare the team appropriately.

11 won = 9 draw = 11 loss… thats Koemans record in Valencia. + the mental issues in valenica. change of Soler! ALbelda case! which we all agree that it had a major blow to the mentality of Los che che players. so untill now i think Koeman is doing a 50% 50% thing despite what the club is going throught! i think thats fairly good!
Plus people.. NO ONE CAN DISAGREE ON HOW GOOD SIR ALEX of Man united is! when he first arived in manchester untited in 1986 the club was a mess, at the season of 1988-1989 Manchester United finished 11th place! DID THEY SACK HIM.. NOOOO! WHY CUZ THEY WAITED AND THEY HAVE PATIENCE AND BRAIN! THEY WAITED TO SEE WHAT HE RELLY GOT! AND we all know that they did the right thing! other wise Man u woudln’t be where it is now if they would have not waited! my msg is clear! im 100% in Koemans side untill 1 to 2 years, if he dint do well then replace him! AMUNT VALENCIA

Ali, I am afraid few people would agree with you at this point. The things happening at Valencia would not have happened if not for Koeman and Soler’s meddling. The cases you raised, like the Albelda one, wouldn’t even BE an issue if not for Koeman’s decision to drop our trio.
I don’t think it’s fair to compare Valencia to Man U and any other team right now, because whatever we are going thru seems unprecedented. There is a lack of discipline in the club and even though Koeman might have good intentions in his methods of controlling the team, I don’t think his dictatorial ways will last.
We need a coach that will inspire the players. Not just one who gives orders and runs the club like our players are robots. With Koeman, I think there’s too much controversy and he seems like Soler’s puppet most of the time.
I agree that Koeman needs to be given more time but for me, Koeman will always be synonymous to the axeing of Albelda and Canizares and Angulo and he will always seem to me as an unpopular coach. It’s not going well, remember what Joaquin said a few months ago?
If we want to maintain a good team and to win sustainably, not just sporadic miraculous victories here and there, I think we need a coach that demands respect from the players not because they are afraid of him, but because they believe in him.

I think that your forgetting that he’s racist, Cesar. Don’t forget the Henry “black shit” incident. Even as a Barca fan, it kills me to see a club as prestigious as Valencia risking relegation. Koeman should go, in my opinion. The lack of respect he shows towards his players is ridiculous. And if I feel bad, I can’t imagine how you all feel. My heart goes out to you. Something that I’ve been wondering, was it just Koeman who froze out Canizares and co, or did the president support that too?

Ali,
Don’t compare Koeman with Alex Fergie.
Alex joined Man U when they were in a dire position (relegation) in the middle of the season + HE WON A FUCKING CL WITH ABERDEEN BE4 joining Man U.
Koeman joined Valencia when we were 4th place plus he’s never done a good job ANYWHERE.
Shit with Ajax (reason behind the downfall), shit with Benfica, not that good with PSV.
Don’t even bother defending the scum of barca, i’ll reply with all ease.
