So Long QQ

By: Cesar | October 29th, 2007

qq.jpgAnd so it ends.

The 3-0 defeat at the hands of coachless Sevilla was the final nail in the coffin for oft-embattled Valencia gaffer Quique (QQ) Sanchez Flores, who was sacked after the game.

The Flores era ends on a sour note. But as I’ve said before, we all saw this coming.

He was a good coach at times, a hard-headed man who clashed with players and management (look up his feud with former sporting director Amadeo Carboni) and a tireless egomaniac.

As much as I’ve called for his head, it’s always sad to see someone let go. I feel bad for the players, the management and the man who I’ve railed so often. There’s no need to spit on a man while he’s down and while I doubt QQ’s eyes will ever gaze at my rantings, I’ll let the guy be with a simple ‘Buena suerte’ (good luck). He did his best. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good enough.

Truth be told, I doubt any coach could do that well with the defense as currently constructed. After watching the game yesterday, I’m at a loss for words. I could rant for hours and hours about the humiliating display against Sevilla last night, but what’s the point? QQ is gone and his era is now a distant memory. Caretaker coach Oscar Fernandez of the reserve team will take charge until a new coach can be found. Good luck. The next game’s against Real Madrid and 6 players are injured: Manuel Fernandes, David Villa, David Silva, Carlos Marchena, Santiago Cañizares and Rubén Baraja. Have fun, Señor Fernandez!

“It wasn’t an easy decision that was taken just because of one bad result,” club president Juan Soler told a news conference on Monday.
“It was a carefully thought-out decision taken after an intensive analysis by the technical staff so that we can achieve our aim of becoming one of the top teams in Europe.”

Sanchez Flores is the third coach to have been sacked by the club since Soler took over as president three years ago with predecessors Antonio Lopez and Claudio Ranieri also failing to meet his expectations.

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho (PLEASE!), Italy’s World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi and Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari are all reported to be in the frame for the permanent post.

“I hope that what has happened ends up being positive for Valencia,” Sanchez Flores told a news conference.
“I leave the club with some degree of pain but also with some relief. They have been difficult and often lonely years.
“I may have lost my job but I feel that I have recovered my life which, for me, is the most important thing.
“I hope Valencia achieve the objectives they have set for themselves, but I leave the club in the knowledge that the team is in a better position than when I arrived.”

A former Real Madrid and Valencia defender who was also capped for Spain, he took charge of Valencia at the start of the 2005-06 season following a successful spell in charge of modest Primera Liga side Getafe.
He steered Valencia to a third-place finish in the league in his first season in charge and fourth place last term, despite a string of injuries to leading players.

Valencia were the most successful Spanish team in last season’s Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals where they lost narrowly to Chelsea after a last-minute strike from midfielder Michael Essien.

The son of former Real Madrid player Isidro Sanchez who married into the Flores flamenco dynasty, Sanchez Flores is renowned for his self confidence and occasional outspoken comments.

Despite the team’s successes on the pitch the 42-year-old never appeared completely settled at a club which has designs on breaking the Real Madrid and Barcelona stranglehold on the Primera Liga honors.

Their notoriously fickle fans frequently criticised Sanchez Flores for an overly conservative style of play.
He also fell out with sporting director Amedeo Carboni over the club’s transfer policy, which led to the Italian’s departure from the Mestalla last season.

So ends the QQ era. What will I blog about now?

But truth be told, here’s a chance for management to do something different. I’m intrigued by the possibilities and hope the technical staff doesn’t go the conservative route. There are plusses and minuses for every one of the people Valencia are looking at to take over (Mourinho, Scolari, Del Bosque, Lippi, Capello). It’s hoped that the board will take their time, compose a sensible strategy and get their man.

Who would you all like to see in charge?

In my mind, it’s a no-brainer: Jose Mourinho has to be our new coach.

As much as I derided him and expected the axe to fall, I also wish him best of luck. He did give it his best, and who knows? Maybe after a decade of experience at other clubs he might develop into a better coach to come back for another stab at it..

In terms of new coach, my rankings are Mourinho, Lippi, Del Bosque (didn’t even think about him before today) then Big Phil for another crack at it

Mourinho and Lippi would both be brilliant.

Another name I’ve heard mentioned is Deschamps. Not quite in the same league as some of the others mentioned, he’d still be an improvement. The only problem is his time at Valencia wasn’t one of the brightest moments in his career.

Apparently Lippi is not up for the job.

Wish him luck in the future. In spite of all his work in Valencia, he still loves the club to some extent, imo. And for that “the club is more important than me” I wish him everything goes well.

Anyway, I think Lippi is the best choice. Nut he stated that he hasn’t talked to anyone at Valencia yet. But I don’t think we should rush. Give Fernandez a game or two, to see what he can do with the team. He can turn out to be the most perfect candidate. He’s our youth coach, and we have some promising guys currently playing in Valencia-Mestalla. He’ll know best how to exploit their potentials.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone at Valencia and I have never said I would be interested in moving there.”…. that is what lippi said… nd from readin between the lines i may come out with .

    1. i wouldnt want to coach velancia.. they r a bit too little for me.

he also said “At the moment I am only thinking about spending more time in Italy with my family. There will come a time when I will return to work, but right now I am in no hurry.” … and i may say he meant

    2. I dont want to coach Valencia…ill wait for big teams to approach me,, if not tthen maybe i would coach valencia.

screw him and his ego… lett him shove it up his ass and the world cup he won.

1.- Lippi is giving hints that he doesnt want to coach Valencia. Yet it could be an strategy. The rumors are that after Valencia insisting on him. He told them that he was gonna wait until Nov 7 (The Italy game). Because he might come back to the national team. Also he most be waiting for Milan. Or Barca which is his outspoken dream, or at least is what he said so after winning the Wolrd Cup.

2.- Mourinho is very expensive. It would be my dream as a Valencianista, but I dont know (with out president and all) if Mou’s petitions would be fulfilled by Valencia. It also doesn’t make sense to me how Mourinho would go a step down from Chelsea to Valencia (which has wwwwaaaayyyyy less money -maybe closer to Roma or Arsenal in comparison than Chelsea, Barsa, Madrid, Milan, etc….). It is difficult to believe from me because he is so career oriented and perfectionist that it wouldnt seem like Mourinho move taking in consideration that he said that prefered Italy or Germany (Cuz he probably would only go to Spain for Barsa or a Multimillion offer by Madrid). We also have to take in consideration that next year is gonna be a shuffle in major teams when it comes to coaching….talking about Milan, Barsa (if they dont do good), Sevilla (i they dont do good), Madrid (if Shuster does not win anything I bet is out), Inter and Even Juventus….not counting the German league for the sake of shortening this thing up.

Capello - don’t think so, Scolari - spoke and said no because of contract (dont want him either), Koeman has contract (yet i prefer Deschamps to him), Deschamps is the most avaliable to me……Del Bosque also, but personally I dont want him because with the team he won in Madrid I think only a really bad coach would have screwed that up…..the test was Turkey and he was sacked there….I dont even wanna mention Van Basten…

If I have to stay with one thats not the major 3, I would say Deschamps because we need someone that plays differently, that has history (although not as much but at least some), but most improtantly someone that WANTS TO COME NOT SOMEONE THAT IS GONNA DO US A FAVOR OR TAKE VALENCIA AS A BRIDGE FOR A BIGGER TEAM.
