Relief
By: Cesar | May 12th, 2008
Ahh, sweet glorious relief … how wonderful it is!
The weight of the world has been lifted off our shoulders.
The birds are chirping. The sun is shining. The flowers smell wonderful and the effervescent coffee in the next room beckons us to enjoy the day …
Ok, it’s really cold, windy and rainy here in New York City this morning. But you know what? Who cares!
Valencia will be in La Liga next season!!!
Coming off our 5-1 destruction of city neighbors Levante, Valencia have assured themselves a place in next season’s competition.
Finally, that deep unsettling pain in my chest can dissipate.
So for all the QQ’s, for all the Ronald Koeman’s, for all the Juan Soler’s … we have survived …
It’s a strange feeling. I’m certainly happy we’re still in the league. I’m estatic we won the Copa Del Rey.
But is this a successful season? I don’t really think so.
Anyways, that debate can wait a week.
For now, our eyes turn to Atletico Madrid and our final game of the season.
But even more importantly, we turn inward and think about who will be playing their final games with us next weekend.
It could be that hat trick hero David Villa will be saying good bye. Wanna hear something ironic? Yesterday’s hat trick saw El Guaje tie Real Madrid sporting director and ex-valencianista Pedja Mijatovic on the list of all-time Valencia scorers with 56 … and where’s he going now?
His pace, finishing and vision for goal could be headed to England or the comfy confines of the Santiago Bernabeu and Real Madrid. Funny how these things work.
David Silva could be running through the San Siro midfield for Inter Milan in a few months.
Joaquin could be falling over and losing balls for Everton and Miguel could be full of prawn for Manchester United.
Change is in the air.
Vicente, Albelda (who, with this yellow card yesterday, probably played his last game with the club. He’s suspended for next week), Canizares and Angulo could join that list as could Maduro, Banega, Timo Hildebrand and Baraja.
That’s a lot of goodbyes. Not to mention the coming of a new coach. Emery? Marcelino? Who knows … and if you’ve been listening to the rumor mills, Juan Soler could be selling his shares any day now …
So many things could be different with our club in a matter of weeks.
Well, we have time to assess what’s happened this season and what will happen in the summer. For now, let’s enjoy the victory. Let’s enjoy the fact we’ll be playing top-flight Spanish football AND UEFA Cup football next season.
As reader Javier de Roque said, it’s like we finished 5th! I know, not really. But think about it. We’re in Europe and we’re still in La Liga. I shrug my shoulders and say, ‘Hey! Not that bad … right? Right??’
Not that good … but I’ll take it for now.
Voro? Any thoughts?
“It was a good result but the important thing is to try to resolve the situation as soon as possible. (Very very true …)
“The players have shown their qualities recently and we have managed to get ourselves out of trouble thanks to their efforts so the merit is theirs. Our previous games for example against Osasuna and Zaragoza were a little lucky but we have to try and carry that luck with us.
“It was not an easy game tonight as Levante did dominate for long spells, we scored with our first shot and perhaps this was the turning point.
“Football goes both ways, in Barcelona we played well but we were thrashed, to day it was in our favor.”
In closing, I’ll say this … and think about this some …
Who is in worse shape? Us or Barcelona?
Did you watch that game against Mallorca yesterday? For those that don’t know, Barca were up 2-0 and then let in 3 at home to lose, 3-2.
At least we had something to play for: survival.
Barca walked into a cauldron of fan dissent, people waving white hankies and calling for the president’s head. (We’ve seen that before, no?)
The negative energy fed the team and they lost their lead.
Now, they’re in for a thorough house cleaning. Players are bound to leave and different players are expected to come.
They have the money to weather the storm. But the expectations for the club are much greater than ours.
I don’t mean this in a negative way. But let’s face facts. Barcelona are one of the richest clubs in the world. They’re expected to be in the Champions League every season. They’re expected to be in at least the top 2 in Spain every season.
Anything less is a disappointment. Talk about pressure.
Sure, we flirted with relegation this season. We fired two coaches, saw players come and go and also witnessed utter fan frustration at the happenings at the Mestalla.
But when it all comes down to it, we won a Cup. We beat Madrid at home. We managed to shake off the negative effects of Koeman and are in next season’s La Liga.
There’s an air of possibility in our club.
Imagine the pressure Barcelona face. If they finish 4th next season, Pep Guardiola’s head will be on a plate for the Nou Camp faithful.
Sometimes, finishing 14th in the league is better than finishing 4th.
In that respect, we did ok.

It’s unlikely Timo would move to Bayern. Rensing has been confirmed as their first choice in goal next year and Timo would most likely see the bench, which would do nothing for his goal of a starting position in the German XI.

Goal.com says we want Guiza (no surprise) but can’t afford his 15mil euros price so we want to throw players in the deal. I know this could be typical Goal.com dribble, but how dire are our straights if we can’t afford 15 mil euros? If so, sad to say the club will surely cash in on Villa and Silva. Incredible. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the new stadium supposed to be finished for the 09/10 season? Couldn’t we plan well enough to have a little change in our coffers for this one last season before we go to Nou Mestalla? Jeez.. what business school did these idiots matriculate from

@ Daniel : I dont think the idiots that run our club ever went to business school. They probably studied some courses in high school.

But I think thal people who run a club like Valencia can’t be idiots. Maybe they are shit?

I just wanted to pop in and congratulate your lot for staying up. It’s fine to say that the season wasn’t so bad now that you’ve reached safety, but since Leeds I’ve never seen such a big club in such a perilous position as you were a week ago. Those two wins were the difference between a bad finish, and a crippling disaster. I’m glad Valencia will continue on in La Liga.

Congrats, Valencia, for staying up. I knew you would.
Boy, I’m such a genius.

Thanks for the gestures boys–supporters from other clubs–stay away from our players.

Well, it appears that the geniuses over at GolTV are about as smart as our club’s management. Apparently they won’t be showing the Valencia game this weekend–for what the 4th week in a row? Instead, we have the joy of watching Zaragoza and Mallorca. Although I need Zaragoza to lose so that Osasuna can stay in La Liga next year, this is nonsense. I won’t be able to watch David Villa wear the team colors for likely the last time. MIERDA.

if Zaragoza fail we see two ex valencianistas fall with them Pablito Aimar and Ayala. What a change of fate. As ive always said anybody that leaves valencia is typically flushing their career down the toilet. Remember my favorite winger Mendieta.. well he recently just got let go. His career is all but over. Well it was all but over at Lazio but now the nail is in the coffin. I personally beleive if Villa leaves or Silva leave theyr will ruin their careers. Theya re big fish in the small pond of valencia Cf. But in a big name team with greedy players they wont play or will simply underperform. You think Villa would be allowed to be first striker after the drought he had mid season. No he would become a permanent bench warmer on Chelsea. In valencia these guys get the breaks because we have no one else.. they are our stars. Look at how many careers Real madrid and chelsea have ruined.
Anyways reflecting on the season i think the liga performance was a disaster. It was top down though.. i dont blame the players because players with no solid leadership cannot perform. They do what theya re told and when moral is low they simply cannot pull it out. QQ was a popular player coach that was axed and then replaced with a complete asshole. Then three greats were benched and moral plummeted further.. then the fans turned as well. The recipe was for disaster .. and the blame falls on the management and Soler for mixing the ingredients to this poison filled buffet.
i do beleive next season will be better.. it would be hard to be much worse. And winning the Copa del Rey does give us something Barca and Villareal dont have.. a trophy. And we do get teh revenue from playing in europe next year to ease the burden of debt. So lets all think possitive.. we traversed the dessert and came out with a jewel.. yes we are thirsty and we are worn out and we are ravaged and burned.. but we are not beaten. And next season those clubs that think they have us will be sorely mistaken.

I am a little new to this but how much money does our club lose by not being in the Champions league next year? I mean we are still in the Uefa Cup, isnt there money involved in that?
Posted from

The money does not compare. But at least uefa cup is some $$$.
Damn Gol TV - I can understand Zara v Mallorca. But Real Madrid v Levante??? The probably won’t be a game due to a strike and who cares about the result! Murcia v Barça - c’mon now I don’t want to see Rijkaard care anymore. Poor guy. I just want to kill Laporta. They should have shown Racing v Osasuna at the very least. OMFG!

I would really like Villa and Silva to stay, and I do believe that they are happy in Valencia. I don’t mean ecstatically delighted, but at least they seem comfortable in Valencia.
It would be even more heartbreaking knowing that they are leaving because the club thinks it’s the best move. If they are sold off, I would rather it is because they wanted to leave on their own will, that’s less painful than the thought of our tosspot management forcefully selling off our star players and keeping the hopeless ones.

I agree Pablo.. as everyone here could probably attest I’ve always maintained that Villa and Silva would be sold, but that was under the assumption that they no longer wanted to stay. I’m totally against the notion of keeping players against their will, but it does seem like the pair might be willing to stay and if that’s the case, we aren’t in bad shape for next season at all. If our stars stay, and we can swap/sell about 10 of our fringe players to bring down our wage bill and bring in a GK, CB, LB and maybe another forward (not necessarily stars, but of better quality than Zigic, Arizmendi etc.), we should be able to challenge at the top once more

Goal.com says we’re offloading Banega now. I think that’s not the right move at all.. both Banega and Fernandez have a lot of potential, and the club are being a bit too harsh on them for their off the field antics. They need to remember that these kids are still very young and with solid leadership from a coach like Emery, they can focus on their football and develop. If it were a player like Baraja or Hildebrand that is older and would be expected to be more mature than that I would understand, but Banega is 19 years old, Fernandes is 22, a bit of juvenile delinquency is only natural.

I concur Daniel. We paid 18 mill for Banega and he has shown the ability to become a special player–why would we get rid of him? The drunken sexcapades aside, he’s a great, young player. As Daniel said, they’re young; these things happen. That said, we should give him one more shot, which would hopefully deter him from hitting the bottle and gettin behind the wheel.

Your both right but thats typical valencia this season paying 18 million euros and then discarding the player i’d stick with him. Im really beginging to worry about our finances because it really does seem like an exodus is about to occur stormy seas ahead, really am interested to see the valencia squad next season don’t want to become the lazio of spain.

As expected, crazy Villa rumours all over the net. Today I read that Chelsea would offer Anelka & 9 million pounds. Won’t be that bad actually, I think Anelka is class

maybe class but old as shit. We can do way better.

Well it could be that since Banega hasnt played much we figure we could get back 17 million instead of losing Silva or Joaquin.. frankly thats a sacrifice i would accept as losing Silva and Joaquin would be a much greater loss.
Today Man U made a tentative offer for Miguel. I personally think Miguel is a very solid Right Back.. and if we dont have a replacement our defence will continue to suffer.. Caniera also is hinting at leaving.. not as big a loss. But still who do we replace him with.
its all good to say we are selling players but who will fill their spots.. we are a team that constantly struggles with injuries. Who will cover Vicente when a fly lands on his knee and knocks him out for 6 weeks? Who will fill in for Morientes when trying to score he heads the post instead of the ball? Who will cover for Baraja when he dies of old age?
Im worried.. i have hope but i am worried. I think that next year we will be int he top half again but i do think that if we dont pull out some very impressive management we may not play in europe.
I also think that this “financial crisis” may actually be.. Soler wants some money before he sells his shares. He is a greedy fat bastard. And he is the head of a greedy fat bastard group of shareholders.. i would love to see the people of valencia or teh city buy the team. For now its only a dream that one day the fans will controll the club.
Till that day .. AMUNT VALENCIA

Daniel- yeah, thats how Barca works. It seems to turn out to be a great system for most clubs that do it.
Congratulations guys. You managed to successfully stay up, despite Koeman’s attempts to do the opposite.

Sorry Jose, if players have to go the Vicente has to be one of them,we cant afford this passenger any longer as good as he is when around. His appearances added together this year add up to 7 games out of 38 with somewhat similar results in previous years.Get a good price or a good swap.Regueiro(Murcia) and Gavilan(Getafe)
are on loan and play left wing.We have other players on loan and they could be put to good use now that money is tight.Fernandes has been with Everton sub-Koeman and has performed well enough, lets use him. He certainly did not get a shot in Valencia. If you want to build up defense,Racing have a brilliant guy in Garay 21 years and 6ft 2. He’s Argentinian and will be a contender for Ayalas place. This closing season with the Champions,Copa,Liga, and National Team, we had 2 games every week for about 3 months. That is what the TV has done to football nowadays. We therefore MUST have 11 reserves fit and ready to play.I have read here that we have about 40 on the books, well they have to be sorted.
Sold or swapped so we can put a new face on the new season (and are we lucky to be there after the Koeman factor)………Lets hope someone sees sense in the Club
