Random Thoughts Before Today’s ‘Game of the Year’

By: Cesar | May 7th, 2008

paella4.jpgValencia v. Real Zaragoza.

Game of the Year.

How many times have I said that?

(Look at that scrumptious paella. Since footie pics haven’t been working, I figured I’d change it up and show you Valencia’s 2nd best contribution to the world, besides Valencia CF … It’s a good luck paella!!)

But think about the ramifications should we lose today.

We inch a step closer to relegation, that dreaded word.

And along with relegation comes:

- A drop to Segunda. How many games you think we’ll be able to see next season?
- A fire-sale of players.
- No big name coaches.
- Dreaded fixtures against the likes of Sporting Gijon and Granada 74.
Although we could see old friends Celta Vigo, Alaves, Tenerife, Albacete and Levante.
Also, our biggest historical rival is Hercules. So that’s something … right???
- A drop in crowd sizes at the Mestalla. Tickets would come cheap. How many people want to come out and see 2nd Division football?

A victory and losses by Valladolid (against Betis) and Recreativo (against Villarreal) would help us a LOT …

We’d jump us to 45 points and basically be assured of staying in La Liga. So let’s hope for that.

The Mestalla will be packed tonight, with the atmosphere of a final.
20,000 orange balloons have been distributed and management have asked fans to dress in orange. They’re selling scarfs and shirts in the same color as well … Should be an electric evening, should we win …

Tonight also marks the return of some former ex-players. Juanfran, Ricardo Oliviera, Pablo Aimar (one of my favorite players) and defender Roberto Ayala.

I miss Aimar and Ayala the most. Imagine what their tenacity in the midfield and hardcore edge in defending would have given us this season.

They’re ex-players also fighting for their La Liga lives with Zaragoza, so you know they’ll be pumped to play against Los Che.

It’s gonna be a battle, people … wherever you are, show some support!!

We need this game!!

After we win, enjoy a drink as you watch El Classico between Barcelona and Real Madrid and watch Barca be humiliated as they give the new champions the pasillo (guard of honor).

But first, let’s make sure we’re not humiliated ourselves.

We need this game … AMUNT!

Frank Rijkaard out as Barca coach, Guardiola in.. With Madrid likely to stick with Schuster, any hope we can land Laudrup? (since we already botched Marcelinho)

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be hard to find better replacements. Can we please swoop Van Der Vaart? If we got him, Guiza might suffice for now as a Villa replacement, although el guaje really has no substitute.

I think selling Villa might be a good move. I think we can find a good “Villa replacement”, meaning not someone who is at Villa’s current level, but someone who has the potential he had when we first bought him that can develop into a phenom 2 or 3 years from now. Granted, this calls for an eye for talent that has been sorely lacking in last summer’s transfer exploits (Arizmendi, Helguera, Zigic… steups), but hopefully we get Carboni back in some capacity if his investors pry Soler’s fat grubby hands off his shares

i dnt think guiza is the man.. i think hes just a season player! like a lot of players he appears a season to be the best player,, the next hes as stupid as a goat!
    - i think we need names + performance! i owuldn’t like to be in champions league with average names.. i wish to have 3 or 4 players tht frighten the opponents!

i guess it kind like a “tradition” in El Che loss an icon of star when they turned to 26/27 years old…Mendieta & Aimar where 27 and Claudio Lopez where 26 when they leave Mestalla, but the removal didn’t bring a negative effect to the club. So if Villa removal is a situation that we can’t avoid, actually it’s only like a deja vu.

I’m very much agree with daniel the most important thing to competed next season are a strong unity of the entire club and certainly the other decent players doesn’t need to leave too.

Jason, I think he means Emery. Does anyone think Vicente should go? He seems to be injured all the time, so its a waste of money to pay him…and he might recover and do better elsewhere. Better for everyone.

    1- morientes
    2- Villa
    3- hilguera
    4 Cani
    5-Albelda
    6-Vicente
    7-Huga Viana
    8-Navaro
    9-Gavilian
    10-Botelli
    11- Alexis
    12- Zigic
    players we should get …
1- a great defender in the middle such as lucio from BMunich
2- Play maker tht is behind the striker– VDV
    3- Goal keeper… idris Kameni
4- a good striker— prolly guiza due to our budget ( crouch from Liverpool) and in swoop for villa if he goes to madrid.. dremthe would be great

I think selling Villa would be the biggest mistake we make. Shouldnt we be considering selling our fringe players before we think of selling our stars? Im sure we can make around 30-40ME by selling the players we dont need (on loan and currently in the squad), which would be the same amount of money we would make if we sell Villa.

I think if Villa is sold we should get a striker and an attacking mid fielder. Is Morientes always injured or they just don’t play him. If he isn’t always injured keep him as an experienced striker off the bench and/or use him as a point man and allow the other stiker to play off of him. The guy still has some worth. He takes his chances…are we forgetting that when he and Villa were starting together the goals were coming better (last season and early this season)

If we don’t keep Morientes the we’ll need to get two strikers or buy one and let Aaron play in the 1st team. There is a place called South America where ’smaller’ clubs like Mallorca get really talented players, that actually play hard and are technically gifted, from. Where we can’t get high profile players, we should get lower ones that have done very well in South America for example and/or from the said same teams like Mallorca and co.

We need a defensive leader. Lucio is a good option, I agree Fayez. There is a wealth of players around…we need to stop settling that’s how we have faltered (Arizmendi, Morientes- he’s ok but we cud have gotten youth here instead, Helguera, Joaquin- yes he’s talented but he cannot cross very well…Arizmendi does better and Angulo even better…that money could have bought a defender, a striker and a cntral attacking player, Zigic even worse…good guy wrong place, wrong time…we didn’t buy Lucho for 18 mil got him for ~22 mil). We need to buy better.

I am lost as to why Saviola is having so much trouble and not getting much of a chance to play football. He played well for Barca when Eto’o wasn’t there, Great for monaco, sevilla. P.S. He can play outwide left or right…left or right and he can cross. Maybe he’d demand wages too high but he isn’t a great player persay but Saviola does play well and is unhappy…what do you all think, how do you rate him?

Hi,News from Spanish Friday papers. As you know,we need just 1 point but there is the saving grace that if either
Osasuna,Recretivo or Zaragoza only get 1 point on Sunday
then Valencia can lose the next 2 safely.Valencia play Levante which wont be easy as in the last 4 visits to their ground they came away with 3 losses and a draw. Levante away to Deportivo on Wednesday only lost by 1 goal in the last minutes. There is a big upheaval however
in the club. They all cornered the President yesterday about not getting paid who said to the midfield player Armando “Do you believe in God? Then go to hell” So maybe their heart wont be in winning !! Our last match against Atletico could be a hard one as their 4th Champion spot is threatened by Seville 3 points behind.
Vicente is out for the last 2 matches because of ankle injury and totalling up all his minutes of play it only amounts to 7 games. Definately one for sale I would think. We should never have got rid of Regeuiro who filled his shoes with some left over and always got up when he was brought down. Morientes is still not fit.
Marca and the AS are having their daily pitch for Raul to play for Spain, ignoring the fact that all the time he has done Spain have not reached the last 4.A list of candidates for the golden boot does not put Raul in the top 10. Ronaldo,Man.U is top with 30 goals and Guiza is second with 25 for Mallorca. When you think of the backing Man.U can give a player compared to Mallorca that is some achievement. All the games on Sunday start at 9 pm Spanish so at 11 pm I think we will be giving a sigh of relief………..finally Amunt Valencia…..

Selling Alexis would be a big mistake he has a bright future he is technically better than Albiol but the two must learn to play together. Second thing anyone heard that Emery of Almeira is bascially our new coach they reckon he is the new Benitez so was Qique apparently!!!! Amunt Valencia

i personally think we need to hold on to Miguel and maybe get del horno back for the back left. Though moretti is commign along.. the problem is in the middle Helguera is the most experienced but isnt good enough.. albiol has moments and so does Alex but still they are teh biggest gaping hole. We need to be tight in the middle like a school girl.

Midfeild i say we are decent. Ever, baraja, Silva Joaquin and Vicente do the job. we could use a Left winger to replace Vicente the man of glass but i think perhapse Silva should be used there with Ever next to him. We seem to experiment too much. Stic to the 4-4-2 and Form a solid playbook with a fast middle and wide flanks to open play. Mata is going to be in Villa’s place next year for sure and he is comming along nicely far from Villa but one day maybe.. he tries hard. Morientes is a must the guy is older but kills himself for the goals and he is always the guy that comes off the bench to score the crucial ones. Zigic is mr Post hitter.. wrong guy for the job has to go. Arizmendi can stay we need a waterboy.. but seriously he tries hard as has been improving but still not 1st squad quality. he can sub in. We need a new goalie to back up hildebrand. Reina would be greatto replace him but who knows with that german he’s a bit of a baby if he isnt first choice. So what do we need to do. i would offload Canizares (breaks heart) Villa need the cash. Angulo. Albelda though i think this is amistake he’s going anyways. And Zigic has to go. too expensive for what he gives back. Every single on loan player including Sunny. (we dont have 4 years to watch this guy improve) There we now have some cash. Now buy.

On defence get back del horno to back up moretti. Make marchena a central defender with helguera. And purchase one more Center back.

In the Midfeild lets leave it be.. i dont think we need any more players if we hold on to Vicente.

Strikers- We need one more after Villa and Zigic go. I would go for a finesse guy like Huntelaar or Saviola.

we need to get back to the basic game.. hard defence with counter attack football. Thats what made us hard to beat and why we won so many games. yaeh sure we never scored tonnes of goals.. who cares. 1-0 is a win 0-0 is still a point. And that what we need now.

The last thing we need is to lose Silva and joaquin right now. that would be disaster .. and losing Miguel would add to our defensive ills.

    Anyways thats my bit.

Hi, Zaragoza v Madrid is on Valencia Ch.Nou for those of you that can get it. If Madrid win VCF are through.
While we are all querying what Trainer we will have next year, the news was confirmed about Barca.
El Presidente Laporta when interviewed said he would appoint Guardiola from July 1st. This for me is incredible that with all the multi millons tied up in players they have to pick an ex-Barca player who is coaching their 3rd division. If they wanted that sort of track record I would have thought they would have taken on Koeman, he could have gone there for free with the money he has been paid by VCF……Adios…Almendras

Now, apparently Inter and Barca are after Silva’s services. I repeat: do not sell, in the words of Ray Hudson, the mercurial quick-Silva! The kid is 22 and is a fixture in the national team. He can only get better. If you really want to profit from him, wait until he is 27 and sell him for at least double what you would get for him this summer. Dear lord, I can’t believe this is even on the table. Joder.
