A Cup We Sorely Need
By: Cesar | January 29th, 2008First off, we really need a victory tomorrow against Atletico Madrid. I’ll be at my local to cheer the lads on. If you’re around, please make sure to come.
This is a tide shifting match. Should we lose, I can honestly see the morale sinking even more, the play bottoming out (even more) and coach Ronald Koeman being sacked. I truly believe his job is on the line the next few weeks.
Reports say we’re in the running again for Jose Mourinho. That’s BS. Why would he come to the sinking ship that is Valencia when he didn’t come to us months ago when we were in a more stable position? That’s not going to happen. Don’t listen to this garbage spewed by the English rumor mill.
But what’s apparent after president Juan Soler ‘gave up’ his power today (more on that later) is that Valencia really want this Copa Del Rey. It’s the only cup we can win this season, the year’s saving grace after all the muck we’ve been through.
You better believe that the squad needs to come out all guns blazing tomorrow. Because another lackluster performance at the Vicente Calderon coupled with some draws or weak losses in the next few weeks and we’ll see Mr. Koeman walk the plank.
It’s do-or-die time for the Dutch handyman.
Speaking of Koeman, he’s not a happy camper these days. Not only is his job in jeopardy, not only is his sparkling blond hair turning gray but he’s angry at the journalists that swarm the Mestalla, claiming they’re raising a ruckus for no reason.
“If a team has a bad run of results then fair enough, but I cannot see how I can be blamed for making two changes when players were injured,” he said, talking about Vicente and David Silva, both unavailable for tomorrow’s match.
“That is what the press have done and they have done it in bad faith.”
Can’t blame him there. The man’s under enormous pressure.
Seeing the press act like it does in Valencia and seeing how the fans react to the squad remind me of the professional sports teams in New York, where I reside.
If a team is doing badly here, the fans let them know it. They’ll boo, they’ll yell profanities, they’ll even throw objects at them! I’m not advocating violence, but I can understand the temptation.
People pay their hard-earned money to be entertained by their favorite teams. When they’re not, they have cause to yell and boo. I’m not sure I understand this oft-mentioned opinion that the clubs should be coddled or made to feel good for simply trying.
This is professional sports, not day care. At the end of the day, these athletes make an inordinate amount of money at our expense. They live lavish lives because we spend our money to watch them play.
I understand the booing, I understand the hankie-waving towards Ronald Koeman and the cries of ‘Koeman Vete Ya!’ It’s tough being a fan and watching the honest yet unemotional play of this Valencia club. Expectations were high. Fans are disappointed.
Speaking of disappointment, Juan Soler has been a huge disappointment since he took over the club in 2004. Today, he gave up day-to-day duties of running the club to three chiefs. The one we need to know about is Rafael Salom, who is now running the sporting side.
This doesn’t mean Soler is gone, that sporting director Miguel Angel Ruiz is fired. What it means is that Soler is now focusing on other things, like lining his fat pockets with even more money (building the new stadium, for example).
It also doesn’t mean he’s selling his shares. The team’s PR man went as far as to say that won’t happen.
Still, this is a move to distance himself from the mess he’s created. How I wish this guy would sell and leave …
Let’s hope for a victory tomorrow. Boo them all you want, but I’d sure like to see them do something worthwhile this season besides fight to stay in La Liga.
Let’s at least try to win the Copa Del Rey!!!

Im pretty sure he gets sacked, I think Valencia’s management and fans do not like the whole Angulo, Albelda and Canizares situation so unless he wins a few games quick he is gone and those players are back in.

Apparently sooner than we think?

Even though I believe MARCA like I believe a hole in the ground.

I can’t believe how badly things have gotten at Valencia. When QQ was around, I thought they were pretty damn lucky to win the few games that they did (fluke goals, like against Valladolid). It seemed right to sack him. They bring in Koeman and the situation seems to have gone from worse to hellish– with not even an ounce of luck.
What’s the bigger problem at this point: Koeman’s tactics & formations OR players simply making costly errors and underperforming?

Koeman gets his tactics dead wrong most of the time, but most of the players are out of form too…Joaquin seems the only one capable of doing something.

u sure Joaquin? he tend to just disappear in matches but hes good also..
i prefer vicente =Danyway i hope valencia lose with my head so that koeman get sacked .. valencia have no soul in their play now.
althought in my heart i would like them to win

they dont seem to have any predesigned plays. Most teams have counter attack plays .. valencia have always been a defensive counter attack football club. QQ and Koeman have transformed it into a confused form that has no direction.. and they blame teh players for that. Players need direction and tactics. If that isnt being properly trained then once on teh field there is nothing to do.
But the gaping hole on our defence isnt working either. Our defence is nearly gaurenteed to allow 8-10 shots on our goal. Thus we lose.

Atletico 3 - 2 Valencia (3-3 agg)
We go through on away goals. Villa more impressive, actually noticed him today. This is probably the best result I could have hope for. We get through to the next round in the CDR, but we lose so now there is more pressure on Koeman to be replaced.

i saw the second half… i think Koeman’s mistake was to replace banega with edu.. edu is a good player but he isn’t in the game still.. plus banega was feeding villa some good balls. when edu came the midfield collapsed. and juaquin was good but passed some stupid passes.. and valenica players were tired fromt he minute 65…maduro is a good player,, i like him…he is solid…still our defence lool.. what can i say,, grab a bucket of pop corn to watch the drama tht happens in our defence every match.

when we were down 2-0 i was on the verge of Oh no not again. Then suddenly we got back into it.. mata played very well and Joaquin was tearing up the right flank.. Banega was feeding Villa and Mata.. i like the kid. But our defence on the back was really weak.
Miguel and Caniera are good and lets leave it at that but both cam eoff and when Arizmendi cam eon i was like oh no he’s gonna arizmendi teh game for us. But he didnt get teh cahnce thank goodness.
Edu is good but he isnt quite worth pulling off a hot banega.. im still glad to have him oni teh bench though. I do like edu quite a bit. he just needs games.

On a quick side note, I tried to explain to the wife what it means to ‘Arizmendi’ something. After a solid half hour, she didn’t get it. So I showed her a few videos clips of Arizmendi playing at RB. She soon learnt

Our Che played much better today. I like Banega in the middle he has some potential. I like Joaquins pace but he makes stupid decisions and horrible passes. One those guys who can really WOW you at times, both bad and good. We lost but I think if we can get that lineup in with Zigic alongside Villa we can do some damage. Oh and hell of a shot by Mata! He played with fire and hunger, I like that, something I havent seen from my beloved Che in quite some time.

lol@rory Arizmendi is a true example of sh*t when it comes to football. He cant score an open goal and he cant defend a disabled striker.
I dont think Koeman has his senses straight. Why would you bench a miguel for an Arizmendi and also,I think Angulo is more of a fighter than Arizmendi imoPosted from

I watched the match yesterday. We have quilified for semifinal of Copa del Rey, but actually we lost a match. I’m happy but it’s a shame for us that we are happy after a loss. A year ago i couldn’t emagine so. Now I know that our goal is to WIN matches, not draw or quilify thanks to away goals.
I can say Joaquin plays best of all this season, as he fights till the end and also scores often. Also good play is performed by Banega, Vicente, Villa, Zigic, Helguera. I think Silva and Hildebrand must work harder and improve to find a place in the team next season. And what about weak players, i can mension Albiol, Arizmendi and Moretti. Albiol couldnt run fast enough and Aguero scored the second goal, and the defender makes mistakes in almost all matches. I think, these 3 players must leave the first team and not Koeman. He has wan many titles both as a footballer and as a Coach, and i am sure he will find the sollution untill the next season.Posted from
